Biogenic amines are important in the regulation of certain aspects of teleost reproduction, but relatively little is known about variations in their levels in the nervous system during the reproductive cycle. The aim of this study was to investigate changes in the levels of dopamine (DA), norepinephrine (NE), serotonin (5-HT), the DA metabolite 3,4-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid (DOPAC) and the 5-HT metabolite 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) in the pituitary and brain (hypothalamus and telencephalon) of the adult male of the tropical marine yellow snapper Lutjanus argentiventris during the reproductive cycle (quiescent, prespawning and spawning periods). Gonad weight, gonad/body weight ratio and plasma-testosterone levels increased steadily throughout gonadal development, but 17#-estradiol levels did not vary significantly. Pituitary DA and DOPAC levels and the DOPAC/DA ratio declined with gonadal development, whereas hypothalamic DOPAC level and DOPAC/DA ratio increased. In the telencephalon, DA and DOPAC levels and DOPAC/DA ratio all peaked in the prespawning period; however, DA level was lowest in the spawning period, whereas DOPAC level and DOPAC/DA ratio were both lowest in the quiescent period. Telencephalic NE, 5-HT and 5-HIAA levels likewise all peaked in the prespawning period, and were lowest in the spawning period. Telencephalic 5-HIAA/5-HT ratio peaked in the quiescent period and was lowest in the spawning period. No significant variation was observed either in pituitary NE level or in hypothalamic NE, 5-HT and 5-HIAA levels. The present results indicate that males of L. argentiventris show a decline in pituitary DA activity during gonadal development. We discuss the possible involvement of biogenic amines in the regulation of GTH II secretion, through direct action on the pituitary or indirect modulation of gonadotrophin-releasing hormone neuron activity. 相似文献

A 17-year monitoring programme of reef flats at Ko Phuket, Thailand afforded an opportunity to evaluate both univariate and multivariate measures of environmental stress in an assessment of change on coral reef ecosystems. The sites at Ko Phuket suffered the effects of dredging in 1986-1987 and then anomalously low sea levels in 1997-1998 as a result of climate-related events in the Indian Ocean. Univariate measures of species diversity and taxonomic distinctness ((*) increased across the reef flat, reflecting the greater effects of physical stresses on the inner reef flats (compared with outer reef flats) at all sites, with more congeneric species present on the inner reef and more confamilial species on the outer reef. Multivariate measures showed a clear breakdown in seriation patterns at all sites during the dredging in 1987 and in 1998, as a result of earlier negative sea-level anomalies. Recovery from environmental disturbances was obvious within 12 months in each case. The domination of the reefs by massive coral species, which are physiologically adapted to intertidal living and which display partial rather than total colony mortality, may be a factor contributing to the apparent resilience of the reef flats together with continued recruitment and survival of juvenile corals during adverse environmental conditions. Elevated sea temperatures and extensive bleaching of corals in 1991, 1995, and 1998 had no effect upon coral community measures, with many corals recovering their zooxanthellae numbers within 3-5 months of the bleaching events. 相似文献

Dissolved ions and suspended participates from twelve water samples from Sohag (different localities) and Aswan (behind and below the High Dam) areas were collected along the River Nile, upper Egypt, which is at present affected seriously by pressure of population, intense industrial and agricultural activities, and atmospheric fallout. Eighteen trace and nine major ions in solution and fourteen metals in suspension were analyzed to establish whether elements are of anthropogenic or natural origin. Results of this study show that the Nile water was contaminated with high concentrations of dissolved lead, and with copper, nickel and mercury to a lesser extent, suggesting that these contaminants are generated from anthropogenic activities. the other dissolved ions in the Nile are of natural origin because their metal concentrations fall within the range of the normal background and average world dissolved values for inland waters. Results show that the usual constituents of suspended particulates in the Nile seem to be some metals (Cu and Zn) adsorbed on iron and manganese oxide/hydroxide. the results also reveal that most trace and major metal particulates increase from south to north due to activities associated with the dense population living along the Nile banks. Sesbania rostrata in pure and amended Pb/Zn tailings. About 90% of seeds of S. rostrata germinated in pure Pb/Zn tailings, which contained high concentrations of Pb, Zn, Cu, and Cd. Although seedling growth suffered
from the adverse environment of Pb/Zn tailings, they became established on tailings stands, in the greenhouse, as well as
on the actual tailings dam, and completed their life cycle in 4 months. Dry matter production and nitrogen accumulation was
3200 kg/ha and 69.4 kg/ha, respectively in the actual tailings dam. Applying inorganic fertilizer to Pb/Zn tailings led to
no obvious improvement in growth and nodulation of S. rostrata, while tailings amended by river sediment or domestic refuse rich in organic matter improved the growth and nodulation of
the species. Azorhizobium caulinodans survived and formed N-fixing stem and root nodules in S. rostrata grown in pure Pb/Zn tailings with a nodule biomass exceeding 300 mg fresh matter per plant. 相似文献

In some estuaries, the recruitment of epifaunal benthic invertebrates coincides with a significant environmental stress, low water-column dissolved oxygen, termed hypoxia (̀ mg O2 l-1). Recruitment of epifaunal species was measured in the lower York River, a subestuary of the Chesapeake Bay, USA, which experiences predictable, periodic hypoxia associated with neap/spring tidal cycling during summer. Recruitment substrata were exposed during 48-h deployments in two areas with differing levels of hypoxia, and epifauna were allowed to recruit during periods of low oxygen (neap tides) and high oxygen (spring tides) in 1996 and 1997. Recruitment was often high during neap tides, even when severe oxygen depletion (<0.5 mg O2 l-1, <0.71 ml O2 l-1) occurred during deployments; indeed, peak recruitment episodes of several dominant epifaunal taxa, and of total epifauna, coincided with hypoxic events during both summers. Increased recruitment during neap tides suggests that factors besides hypoxia influenced recruitment in the York River; these factors may have included changes in larval availability and lower current speeds. This study illustrates how the relationship between recruitment and large-scale stresses, such as hypoxia, may be difficult to predict, since large-scale stresses are often correlated with numerous other factors. Short-term hypoxia appears to have little effect on recruitment in the field for many epifaunal species in this ecosystem, which may explain, in part, why substrata exposed for longer durations (1 month) in this system showed few effects of hypoxia on community composition or diversity. High larval tolerance of hypoxic stress may allow communities to persist even though the summer hypoxia season coincides with the recruitment of many epifaunal species. Color variation is used in taxonomic classification of reef fishes, but it may not reliably indicate evolutionary divergence.
In the central Pacific, there are three color morphs of the flame angelfish, Centropyge loriculus: a red morph that occurs primarily in the Hawaiian archipelago, the endemic Marquesan color morph with reduced black markings,
and an orange morph that occurs throughout the rest of Oceania. The red and orange morphs co-occur at Johnston Atoll (1,300 km
south of Hawai’i), but intermediate forms have not been reported. To determine whether the three color morphs represent distinct
evolutionary lineages, we compared 641 base pairs of mitochondrial cytochrome b. Forty-one closely related haplotypes were observed in 116 individuals. Analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) indicated
no significant genetic structure among color morphs (ΦST = 0.011, P = 0.147). Likewise, there was no significant pairwise structure between sampling locations, separated by up to 5,700 km,
after a Bonferroni correction (ΦST = 0.000–0.080, P = 0.0130–0.999). Genetic studies in conjunction with larval distribution data indicate that Centropyge species are highly dispersive. While there is a strong geographic component to the distribution of color morphs in C. loriculus, we find no evidence for corresponding genetic partitioning. We do not rule out an adaptive role for color differentiation,

During Malaysia’s rapid economic development into becoming a middle income country in the past several decades, environmental
changes resulted in altered land use patterns because of agricultural practices such as large scale rice, rubber and oil palm
cultivation. The impact of environmental changes brought about by rice and rubber cultivation affected the breeding habitats
of mosquito vectors which in turn affected the prevalence of two strains of lymphatic filariasis in different ways. With scrub
typhus, the development of oil palm plantations affected the ecology of mite and rodent populations which resulted in very
high incidence of the disease in affected populations. Malaysia’s relentless urbanization has resulted in increased incidence
of dengue, as peridomestic mosquito vectors increasingly colonize urban habitats. This article discusses how ecological factors
determine the way lymphatic filariasis, scrub typhus and dengue were spread in Malaysia. The nation’s experience with environmental

The influence of the Kosogorsky Metallurgical Plant (KMP; Tula region, Russia) on the abundance and biodiversity of carabid beetles and soil macrofauna and on the trophic activity of soil biota was studied. Metal concentrations in the impact plot were many times higher than those in the control plot located on the same transect. As the transect approached KMP, both the abundance of soil invertebrates (geobionts) and trophic activity of the soil biota remained unchanged, whereas the abundance and diversity of carabids (herpetobionts) decreased drastically. It is suggested that the impact of the KMP on herpetobionts is accounted for by modification of the structure of ecosystems and that herpetobiontic and geobiontic groups of the macrofauna respond differently to this impact because of differences in the ecological mechanisms of population response. 相似文献

In the southern-taiga low grass–green moss fir forest completely defoliated by the Siberian moth, the rate of soil respiration in the third year after the pest population outbreak was 1.5 times higher than in an undisturbed tree stand. This was explained by a significant increase in the abundance and activity of soil microorganisms in the pest-defoliated forest, which occurred due to the qualitative changes in the litter composition and the increased temperature and moisture in the upper soil layers. The rate of carbon emission from the soil in the defoliated forest was 41.7 kg/ha per day, compared to 28.3 kg/ha per day in the undisturbed fir forest. 相似文献
