Mercury is a hazardous metal responsible for environmental contamination and human intoxication. Methylmercury, a very toxic organic compound, bio-accumulates through food chain, and is responsible for chronic mercury exposure of riverside Amazonian communities with a diet rich in fish. Uncertainties about the reference exposure dose that could have damaging consequences for nervous system development makes necessary the biomonitoring of these Amazonian populations, especially children. In this work, a comparative study was performed in exposed and non-exposed children living in the Amazon. A total of 168 children were analyzed to find possible correlations between gender, age, location, and hair mercury content. For each location, no statistically significant differences (P<0.05) were detected for gender and age versus mercury content. However, mean mercury levels in hair samples may indicate a tendency of boys to average higher hair concentrations. Also, in the community with highest levels of mercury, the limit of 10 micro g/g of mercury was surpassed by 65% of 2-6 years and 50% of 7-12 years children but only by 27% of 0-1 year babies, pointing to a lower bioaccumulation and/or the existence of a protection mechanism in babies. Log normal distributions of mercury concentrations for each location showed that children from populations under influence of gold mining activity contain the highest mercury levels in hair samples, though this intoxication may have decreased when compared to previous studies. Knowledge originated by this monitoring will better assist in the development of prevention strategies and government actions targeting the mercury contamination of Amazonian environment. 相似文献

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) elicit toxic effects in different species. PCBs undergo biotransformation by enzymes associated with the mixed functional oxidase system, such as cytochrome P450 (cyt P450), this biotransformation being sex-dependent. No other metabolic pathways are known, however, in connection with this process. Thus, the present study aims to evaluate the effects of waterborne PCBs at sublethal nominal concentrations (0.92 mg PCBs/L) on the black-fin goodeid Girardinichthys viviparus, an endangered fish native to the Valley of Mexico, as well as any sex differences related to PCB biotransformation. Eight-month-old adult fish born in the laboratory were exposed for 1, 2, 4, 8 and 16 days to half the LC(0) (calculated concentration at which no deaths occurred after 96 h) determined by an acute toxicity test. Specimens were sacrificed following exposure and the liver was used to evaluate different biomarkers: cyt P450 concentration and alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase (EROD) activities. Results show sexual differentiation with regard to all biomarkers in both the control group and PCB-treated fish, with higher values found in males. The induction rate of cyt P450 remained constant throughout the study in males. In females, induction peaked on day 4, coinciding with maximum EROD activity, and fell significantly thereafter. EROD was lower in PCB-treated males than in the control group, but was greater in magnitude. ADH was significantly induced in both sexes from day 2 to day 16 of exposure. The highest response as compared to the control group occurred on day 8 in females. A correlation was found between ADH activity and exposure to PCBs. Radon-222 was measured in groundwater sources of Extremadura (Spain), analyzing 350 samples from private and public springs, wells, and spas by liquid scintillation counting (LSC) and gamma spectrometry. The 222Rn activity concentrations ranged from 0.24 to 1168 Bq L−1. The statistical analysis showed a log-normal distribution with a mean of (111 ± 7) Bq L−1 and a median of (36 ± 3) Bq L−1. A hydrogeological study revealed correlations between the activity concentration and the aquifer material's characteristics. A map of 222Rn in groundwater was elaborated and compared with the natural gamma radiation map for this region. About 35% of the samples showed 222Rn activity concentrations above the Euratom recommended limit of 100 Bq L−1. Three uranium series radionuclides (238U, 234U, and 226Ra) were also assayed by alpha-particle spectrometry, estimating the annual effective dose due to the presence of these natural radionuclides in drinking water. 相似文献
