Continuous emission monitors at San Juan have had very high availability and reliability over the past two years. Three extractive systems are in service on two 350 MW units and one 515 MW unit. Another 515 MW unit is scheduled for startup in 1982. All units are coal-fired with electrostatic precipitators and Wellman-Lord desulfurization systems, and all units will have the same extractive emission monitor systems utilizing microprocessors for control and data acquisition.

This paper discusses the design of and operating experience with the extractive systems and microprocessors, including their problems, advantages, and disadvantages. It will also outline system costs and describe certification experience for two units.

Secondly, this paper describes five years of history on operating and maintaining two early in-situ analyzer systems, a temporary system, and the present extractive systems. Finally, the development of dedicated daily maintenance will be summarized as a major reason for successful emission monitor systems.  相似文献

Abstract

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in 1997 revised the 1-hr ozone (O3) National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) to one based on an 8-hr average, resulting in potential nonattainment status for substantial portions of the eastern United States. The regulatory process provides for the development of a state implementation plan that includes a demonstration that the projected future O3 concentrations will be at or below the NAAQS based on photochemical modeling and analytical techniques.

In this study, four photochemical modeling systems, based on two photochemical models, Community Model for Air Quality and the Comprehensive Air Quality Model with extensions, and two emissions processing models, Sparse Matrix Optimization Kernel for Emissions and Emissions Modeling System, were applied to the eastern United States, with emphasis on the northeastern Ozone Transport Region in terms of their response to oxides of nitrogen and volatile organic carbon-focused controls on the estimated design values. With the 8-hr O3 NAAQS set as a bright-line test, it was found that a given area could be termed as being in or out of attainment of the NAAQS depending upon the modeling system. This suggests the need to provide an estimate of model-to-model uncertainty in the relative reduction factor (RRF) for a better understanding of the uncertainty in projecting the status of an area's attainment. Results indicate that the model-to-model differences considered in this study introduce an uncertainty of the future estimated design value of ~3–5 ppb.  相似文献

Abstract

Long-term field comparisons of continuous and integrated filter measurements of mass concentrations of par-ticulate matter (PM) with an aerodynamic diameter less than or equal to 2.5 μm (PM2.5) were performed at rural and urban sites in New York State. Two versions of the continuous tapered element oscillating microbalance (TEOM) mass monitor are deployed at each site, in addition to Federal Reference Method filter samplers. Data are grouped into monthly averages to retain and demonstrate seasonal differences. Strong seasonal dependence is observed—the TEOM monitors with the heated sensors are biased systematically low with respect to the Federal Reference Method measurements during the cold season. For the rural site, the average bias for the sample equilibration system (SES)-equipped and standard TEOM monitors is 14 and 24%, respectively. At this location, the TEOM monitor measurements were biased low for all 34 months. For the urban site, the average bias for the SES and standard TEOM monitors is 8 and 18%, respectively. At this location, the TEOM monitor measurements are as likely to be biased high as low during the warm-season months. The hour averaged data from the two versions of the TEOM monitor are also compared, and also indicate that the SES-equipped version of the TEOM monitor captures 7-11% more PM2.5 mass at these locations.  相似文献

Emissions from feedlot operations are known to vary by environmental conditions and few if any techniques or models exist to predict the variability of odor emission rates from feedlots. The purpose of this paper is to outline and summarize unpublished reports that are the result of a collective effort to develop industry-specific odor impact criteria for Australian feedlots. This effort used over 250 olfactometry samples collected with a wind tunnel and past research to develop emission models for pads, sediment basins, holding ponds, and manure storage areas over a range of environmental conditions and tested using dynamic olfactometry. A process was developed to integrate these emission models into odor dispersion modeling for the development of impact criteria. The approach used a feedlot hydrology model to derive daily feedlot pad moisture, temperature, and thickness. A submodel converted these daily data to hourly data. A feedlot pad emissions model was developed that predicts feedlot pad emissions as a function of temperature, moisture content, and pad depth. Emissions from sediment basins and holding ponds were predicted using a basin emissions model as a function of days since rain, inflow volume, inflow ratio (pond volume), and temperature. This is the first attempt to model all odor source emissions from a feedlot as variable hourly emissions on the basis of climate, management, and site-specific conditions. Results from the holding pond, sediment basin, and manure storage emission models performed well, but additional work on the pad emissions model may be warranted. This methodology mimics the variable odor emissions and odor impact expected from feedlots due to climate and management effects. The main outcome of the work is the recognition that an industry-specific odor impact criterion must be expressed in terms of all of the components of the assessment methodology.  相似文献

Abstract: We explore the implications of an often overlooked fact in community restoration: most species, in real or synthetic communities, are infrequent or rare, a phenomenon we call "inherent rarity." Whether from long-term interactions of many factors affecting birth, death, and establishment within natural communities, or from short-term interactions of recently created communities, species abundance distributions are roughly lognormal or even more attenuated. The greater the predisturbance species diversity of remnants or the planting diversity of restorations, and the smaller the area of a habitat patch, the more likely a large proportion of species will exist in populations so small that they are acutely or chronically vulnerable to local extinction. We suggest that habitat fragmentation will inevitably favor plants and animals that are highly mobile, early successional species, including many exotic weeds among plants, or species that are historically organized as metapopulations that happen to be common enough to function as such. We further explore rationales for countering the effects of inherent rarity, including connectivity from buffers, corridors, and stepping stones, and dominance suppression from seasonally appropriate mowing, grazing, or fire.  相似文献

This paper reports CO2 saturation estimations based on resistivity data obtained from laboratory measurements and induction logging results at the Nagaoka pilot CO2 injection site. The laboratory experiments put in evidence that the presence of clay content tends to reduce the increase of resistivity caused by the displacement of brine by less conductive CO2. As a result, CO2 saturations estimated from resistivity measurements without any correction for the clay effect are considerably lower than the actual saturations. The resistivity index (RI) provides better estimates of CO2 saturations than the Archie's equation because it requires the determination or assumption of only one rock parameter: the saturation exponent. CO2 saturations estimated from the induction logging data acquired at Nagaoka are considerably lower than the neutron porosity changes due to displacement between brine and CO2 in the reservoir. Even in the case of considering the De Witte's equation and the Poupon's to account for the clay effect, it was still difficult to get a good agreement with the neutron logging results. New relations based on the resistivity index with correction factors for the clay effect are developed and implemented in this study. One of these relations has proved to be effective to estimate CO2 saturations in saline formations with high clay content.  相似文献

The ability of natural attenuation to mitigate agricultural nitrate contamination in recharging aquifers was investigated in four important agricultural settings in the United States. The study used laboratory analyses, field measurements, and flow and transport modeling for monitoring well transects (0.5 to 2.5 km in length) in the San Joaquin watershed, California, the Elkhorn watershed, Nebraska, the Yakima watershed, Washington, and the Chester watershed, Maryland. Ground water analyses included major ion chemistry, dissolved gases, nitrogen and oxygen stable isotopes, and estimates of recharge date. Sediment analyses included potential electron donors and stable nitrogen and carbon isotopes. Within each site and among aquifer-based medians, dissolved oxygen decreases with ground water age, and excess N(2) from denitrification increases with age. Stable isotopes and excess N(2) imply minimal denitrifying activity at the Maryland and Washington sites, partial denitrification at the California site, and total denitrification across portions of the Nebraska site. At all sites, recharging electron donor concentrations are not sufficient to account for the losses of dissolved oxygen and nitrate, implying that relict, solid phase electron donors drive redox reactions. Zero-order rates of denitrification range from 0 to 0.14 micromol N L(-1)d(-1), comparable to observations of other studies using the same methods. Many values reported in the literature are, however, orders of magnitude higher, which is attributed to a combination of method limitations and bias for selection of sites with rapid denitrification. In the shallow aquifers below these agricultural fields, denitrification is limited in extent and will require residence times of decades or longer to mitigate modern nitrate contamination.  相似文献

An area of interest in precision farming is variable-rate application of herbicides to optimize herbicide use efficiency and minimize negative off-site and non-target effects. Site-specific weed management based on field scale management zones derived from soil characteristics known to affect soil-applied herbicide efficacy could alleviate challenges posed by post-emergence precision weed management. Two commonly used soil-applied herbicides in dryland corn (Zea mays L.) production are atrazine and metolachlor. Accelerated dissipation of atrazine has been discovered recently in irrigated corn fields in eastern Colorado. The objectives of this study were (i) to compare the rates of dissipation of atrazine and metolachlor across different soil zones from three dryland no-tillage fields under laboratory incubation conditions and (ii) to determine if rapid dissipation of atrazine and/or metolachlor occurred in dryland soils. Herbicide dissipation was evaluated at time points between 0 and 35 d after soil treatment using a toluene extraction procedure with GC/MS analysis. Differential rates of atrazine and metolachlor dissipation occurred between two soil zones on two of three fields evaluated. Accelerated atrazine dissipation occurred in soil from all fields of this study, with half-lives ranging from 1.8 to 3.2 d in the laboratory. The rapid atrazine dissipation rates were likely attributed to the history of atrazine use on all fields investigated in this study. Metolachlor dissipation was not considered accelerated and exhibited half-lives ranging from 9.0 to 10.7 d in the laboratory.  相似文献

The combined electrochemical oxidation-solar-light/immobilized TiO2 film process was conducted to degrade an azo dye, Reactive Black 5 (RB5). The toxicity was also monitored by the Vibrio fischeri light inhibition test. The electrochemical oxidation rapidly decolorized RB5 (55, 110 μM) with a supporting electrolyte of 2 g l−1 NaCl at current density 277 A m−2 and pH 4. However, TOC mineralization and A310 removal were low. Additionally, the treated solution showed high biotoxicity. RB5 at 110 μM significantly retarded the de-colorization efficiency by using the solar-light/immobilized TiO2 film process. The combined electrochemical oxidation-solar-light/immobilized TiO2 process effectively increased the removal of color, A310, and TOC. The toxicity was also significantly reduced after 3 h of solar irradiation. The results indicated that the low-cost combined process is a potential technique for rapid treatment of RB5.  相似文献

The paper builds on existing literature, highlighting current understanding and identifying unresolved issues about MeHg exposure, health effects, and risk assessment, and concludes with a consensus statement. Methylmercury is a potent toxin, bioaccumulated and concentrated through the aquatic food chain, placing at risk people, throughout the globe and across the socioeconomic spectrum, who consume predatory fish or for whom fish is a dietary mainstay. Methylmercury developmental neurotoxicity has constituted the basis for risk assessments and public health policies. Despite gaps in our knowledge on new bioindicators of exposure, factors that influence MeHg uptake and toxicity, toxicokinetics, neurologic and cardiovascular effects in adult populations, and the nutritional benefits and risks from the large number of marine and freshwater fish and fish-eating species, the panel concluded that to preserve human health, all efforts need to be made to reduce and eliminate sources of exposure.  相似文献
