Livestock manure in feedlots releases ammonia (NH3), which can be sorbed by nearby soil and plants. Ammonia sorption by soil and its effects on soil and perennial grass N contents downwind from two large cattle feedlots in Alberta, Canada were investigated from June to October 2002. Atmospheric NH3 sorption was measured weekly by exposing air-dried soil at sampling points downwind along 1700-m transects. The amount of NH3 sorbed by soil was 2.60 to 3.16 kg N ha(-1) wk(-1) near the source, declining to about 0.25 kg N ha(-1) wk(-1) 1700 m downwind, reflecting diminishing atmospheric NH3 concentrations. Ammonia sorption at a control site away from NH3 sources was much lower: 0.085 kg N ha(-1) wk(-1). Based on these rates, about 19% of emitted NH3 is sorbed by soil within 1700 m downwind of feedlots. Field soil and grass samples from the transect lines were analyzed for total N (TN) and KCl-extractable N content (soil only). Nitrate N content in field soil followed a trend similar to that of atmospheric NH3 sorption. Soil TN contents, because of high background levels, showed no clear pattern. The TN content of grass, downwind of the newer feedlot, followed a pattern similar to that of NH3 sorption; downwind of the older feedlot, grass TN was correlated to soil TN. Our results suggest that atmospheric NH3 from livestock operations can contribute N to local soil and vegetation, and may need to be considered when determining fertilizer rates and assessing environmental impact.  相似文献

The symbiotic co-evolution of plants and microbes leads to difficulties in understanding which of the two components is responsible for a given environmental response. Plant-microbe studies greatly benefit from the ability to grow plants in axenic (sterile) culture. Several studies have used axenic plant culture systems, but experimental procedures are often poorly documented, the plant growth environment is not optimal, and axenic conditions are not rigorously verified. We developed a unique axenic system using inert components that promotes plant health and can be kept sterile for at least 70 d. Crested wheatgrass (Agropyron cristatum cv. CDII) plants were grown in sand within flow-through glass columns that were positively pressured with filtered air. Plant health was optimized by regulating temperature, light level, CO2 concentration, humidity, and nutrients. The design incorporates several novel aspects, such as pretreatment of the sand with Fe, graduated sand layers to optimize the air-water balance of the root zone, and modification of a laminar flow hood to serve as a plant growth chamber. Adaptations of several sterile techniques were necessary for maintenance of axenic conditions. Axenic conditions were verified by plating and staining leachates as well as a rhizoplane stain. This system was designed to study nutrient and water stress effects on root exudates, but is useful for assessing a broad range of plant-microbe-environment interactions. Based on total organic C analysis, 74% of exudates was recovered in the leachate, 6% was recovered in the bulk sand, and 17% was recovered in the rhizosphere sand. Carbon in the leachate after 70 d reached 255 microg d(-1). Fumaric, malic, malonic, oxalic, and succinic acids were measured as components of the root exudates.  相似文献

Recently, it has been noted that fish in acidified lakes may contain elevated levels of mercury. While there is correlation among lakes between depressed pH and high mercury concentrations in fish, the cause of this problem is unknown. A number of hypotheses have been advanced in explanation, including increased mercury deposition, changes in mercury mobility due to acidification, pH dependent changes in mercury uptake by biota, and alterations in population size and/or structure which result in increased bioaccumulation in fish. Because fish accumulate mercury mainly in an organic form, methylmercury, changes in the biogeochemical cycling of this compound might account for elevated bioaccumulation. Mercury methylation is predominantly a microbial process which occurs in situ in lakes. This review focuses on microbiological and biogeochemical changes that may lead to increased levels of methylmercury in fresh waters impacted by acid-deposition. In particular, we focus on the hypothesis that sulfate-reducing bacteria are important mediators of metal methylation in aquatic systems and, moreover, that sulfate-deposition may stimulate methylmercury production by enhancing the activity of sulfate-reducing bacteria in sediments.  相似文献

A site in mid-western Sweden contaminated with chlorinated solvents originating from a previous dry cleaning facility, was investigated using conventional groundwater analysis combined with compound-specific isotope data of carbon, microbial DNA analysis, and geoelectrical tomography techniques. We show the value of this multidisciplinary approach, as the different results supported each interpretation, and show where natural degradation occurs at the site. The zone where natural degradation occurred was identified in the transition between two geological units, where the change in hydraulic conductivity may have facilitated biofilm formation and microbial activity. This observation was confirmed by all methods and the examination of the impact of geological conditions on the biotransformation process was facilitated by the unique combination of the applied methods. Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) have been used as flame retardants in foams, fabrics and plastics, and are common contaminants of household air and dust and bioaccumulate in wildlife, and are detectable in human tissues and in fish and animal food products. In the Great Lakes Basin sport fish consumption has been demonstrated to be an important source of PCB and DDE exposure. PBDEs are present in the same sport fish but prior to our study the contribution to human PBDE body burdens from Great Lakes sport fish consumption had not been investigated. This study was designed to assess PBDE, PCB and 1,1-bis(4-chlorophenyl)-2,2-dichloroethene (DDE) serum concentrations in an existing cohort of 508 frequent and infrequent consumers of sport-caught fish living in five Great Lake states. BDE congeners 47 and 99 were identified in the majority of blood samples, 98% and 62% respectively. summation operatorPBDE levels were positively associated with age, hours spent outdoors, DDE, summation operatorPCB, years of sportfish consumption, and catfish and shellfish intake, and negatively associated with income and recent weight loss. Other dietary components collected were not predictive of measured summation operatorPBDE levels. In multivariate models, summation operatorPBDE levels were positively associated with age, years consuming sport fish, shellfish meals, and computer use and negatively associated with recent weight loss. Having summation operatorPBDE levels in the highest quintile was independently associated with older age, male gender, consumption of catfish and shellfish, computer use and spending less time indoors. summation operatorPCB and DDE were strongly associated suggesting common exposure routes. The association between summation operatorPBDE and summation operatorPCB or DDE was much weaker and modeling suggested more diverse PBDE sources with few identified multi-contaminant-shared exposure routes. Based on a survey conducted in 1989 and 1990 at 21 conventional nozzle and 33 vapor recovery nozzle equipped service stations in California, the California Air Resources Board staff conclude that conventional nozzles in California produce a greater number of quantifiable spills (≥1 ml) and a greater average volume per spill than do vapor recovery equipped nozzles. This conclusion is based on survey results showing conventional nozzles having spills 30.3 percent of the time at four fueling intervals vs 22.3 percent for vapor recovery nozzles, and having an average spill volume of 13.3 ml vs 10.6 ml for vapor recovery nozzles. However, if spillage noted from a conventional nozzle during a very large spill event is subtracted from the total quantified spill volume, the average volume per quantifiable spill for a conventional nozzle would drop to 11.0 ml. This value is very close to the 10.6 ml average volume per quantifiable spill with a vapor recovery nozzle. In addition, conventional nozzles in California produce about 14 percent more drop (<1 ml) spillage than do vapor recovery nozzles. Drop spillage has not been quantified as to the volume of gasoline it represents.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

We measured particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) exposures, home temperature, arterial blood oxygen saturation, blood pressure, and lung function in 30 volunteer Los Angeles area residents during four-day intervals. Continuous Holter electrocardiograms were recorded in a subgroup on the first two days. Subjects recorded symptoms and time-activity patterns in diaries during monitoring, and during a reference period one week earlier/later. All subjects had severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. PM10 (24-hr mean) at monitoring stations near subjects’ homes averaged 33 μg/m3, and ranged from 9 to 84 μpg/m3. In longitudinal analyses, day-to-day changes in PM2.5 and PM10 outside subjects’ homes significantly tracked concurrent station PM10 (r2 = 0.22 and 0.44, respectively). Indoor and personal concentrations were less related to station readings (r2 ≤ 0.1), but tracked each other (r2 ≥ 0.4). In-home temperatures tracked outdoor temperatures more for lows (r2 = 0.27) than for highs (r2 = 0.10). These longitudinal relationships of subject-oriented and station PM measurements were generally similar to cross-sectional relationships observed previously in similar subjects. Among health measurements, only blood pressure showed reasonably consistent unfavorable longitudinal associations with particulates, more with station or outdoor PM than with indoor or personal PM.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The chemical mass balance (CMB) model can be applied to estimate the amount of airborne particulate matter (PM) coming from various sources given the ambient chemical composition of the particles measured at the receptor and the chemical composition of the source emissions. Of considerable practical importance is the identification of those chemical species that have a large effect on either the source contributions or errors estimated by the CMB model. This paper details a study of a number of influential diagnostics for application of the CMB software. Some of the diagnostics studied are standard regression diagnostics based on single-row deletion diagnostics. A number of new diagnostics were developed specifically for the CMB application, based on the pseudo-inverse of the source composition matrix and called nondeletion diagnostics to distinguish them from the standard deletion diagnostics. Simulated data sets were generated to compare the diagnostics and their response to controlled amounts of random error.

A particular diagnostic called a modified pseudoinverse matrix (MPIN), developed for this study, was found to be the best choice for CMB model application. The MPIN diagnostic contains virtually all the information present in both deletion and nondeletion diagnostics. Since the MPIN diagnostic requires only the source profiles, it can be used to identify influential species in advance without sampling the ambient data and to improve CMB results through possible remedial actions for the influential species. Specific recommendations are given for interpretation and use of the MPIN diagnostic with the CMB model software. Elements with normalized MPIN absolute values of 1 to 0.5 are associated with influential elements. Noninfluential elements have normalized MPIN absolute values of 0.3 or less. Elements with absolute values between 0.3 and 0.5 are ambiguous but should generally be considered noninfluential.  相似文献
