Attached algae play a minor role in conceptual and empirical models of lake ecosystem function but paradoxically form the energetic base of food webs that support a wide variety of fishes. To explore the apparent mismatch between perceived limits on contributions of periphyton to whole-lake primary production and its importance to consumers, we modeled the contribution of periphyton to whole-ecosystem primary production across lake size, shape, and nutrient gradients. The distribution of available benthic habitat for periphyton is influenced by the ratio of mean depth to maximum depth (DR = z/ z(max)). We modeled total phytoplankton production from water-column nutrient availability, z, and light. Periphyton production was a function of light-saturated photosynthesis (BPmax) and light availability at depth. The model demonstrated that depth ratio (DR) and light attenuation strongly determined the maximum possible contribution of benthic algae to lake production, and the benthic proportion of whole-lake primary production (BPf) declined with increasing nutrients. Shallow lakes (z < or =5 m) were insensitive to DR and were dominated by either benthic or pelagic primary productivity depending on trophic status. Moderately deep oligotrophic lakes had substantial contributions by benthic primary productivity at low depth ratios and when maximum benthic photosynthesis was moderate or high. Extremely large, deep lakes always had low fractional contributions of benthic primary production. An analysis of the world's largest lakes showed that the shapes of natural lakes shift increasingly toward lower depth ratios with increasing depth, maximizing the potential importance of littoral primary production in large-lake food webs. The repeatedly demonstrated importance of periphyton to lake food webs may reflect the combination of low depth ratios and high light penetration characteristic of large, oligotrophic lakes that in turn lead to substantial contributions of periphyton to autochthonous production.  相似文献

An extensive study was carried out in the Netherlands on the occurrence of a number of estrogenic compounds in surface water, sediment, biota, wastewater, rainwater and on the associated effects in fish. Compounds investigated included natural and synthetic hormones, phthalates, alkylphenol(ethoxylate)s and bisphenol-A. The results showed that almost all selected (xeno-)estrogens were present at low concentrations in the aquatic environment. Locally, they were found at higher levels. Hormones and nonylphenol(ethoxylate)s were present in concentrations that are reportedly high enough to cause estrogenic effects in fish. Field surveys did not disclose significant estrogenic effects in male flounder (Platichthys flesus) in the open sea and in Dutch estuaries. Minor to moderate estrogenic effects were observed in bream (Abramis brama) in major inland surface waters such as lowland rivers and a harbor area. The prevalence of feminizing effects in male fish is largest in small regional surface waters that are strongly influenced by sources of potential hormone-disrupting compounds. High concentrations of plasma vitellogenin and an increased prevalence of ovotestes occurred in wild male bream in a small river receiving a considerable load of effluent from a large sewage treatment plant. After employing in vitro and in vivo bioassays, both in situ and in the laboratory, we conclude that in this case hormones (especially 17 alpha-ethynylestradiol) and possibly also nonylphenol(ethoxylate)s are primarily responsible for these effects.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: Waddell Creek is a perennial stream near Santa Cruz, California, which discharges into the Pacific Ocean about 38 km from the epicenter of the Loma Prieta earthquake (October 17, 1989, M 7.1). The earthquake caused no significant changes or damage to structures or surface features in the area, but was followed by an order of magnitude transient increase in discharge of Waddell Creek and nearby springs. The transients approximate a step rise followed by an exponential recession with time constants of from 37 to 59 days. The flow recession pattern of Waddell Creek was obscured by heavy rains after about 50 days; however, the springs maintained an exponential recession with minimal rain interference for periods of several time constants, then abruptly ceased flowing. A comparison of the pre-quake and post-quake chemical signature of one of the springs shows only minor changes in water chemistry indicating a common source for pre- and post-quake waters. Increased permeability of the subsurface ground material appears to be the most probable cause of the hydrologic changes. Post-seismic reduction of permeability has not been observed or inferred.  相似文献

Summary Many birds of the northern hemisphere shift their migratory course to more southerly directions when moving from northern to southern latitudes. Birds from Central Europe, for example, change their course from SW to S or from SE to S respectively (Fig. 1). This also seems to apply to some other animals.The hypothesis presented here explains the observed shifts in migratory direction on the basis of changes in the parameters of the earth's magnetic field and hence would make a genetic fixation of shifts in the migratory direction unnecessary.To determine the direction of migration birds do not refer to the polarity of the magnetic field but to its dip (=). According to the hypothesis presented here, the birds, however, do not refer to the direction of dip as previously believed but to the individual apparent angle of dip (=), this angle changes depending on the heading of the bird (see Fig. 3 and Eq. 1). Maintaining a species specific or population specific the bird will move in its predetermined migratory direction. Changes in the dip of the earth's magnetic field correspond to changes in latitude. According to the hypothesis with fixed, the migratory direction will change when the dip changes. Given the hypothesis and the parameters of the earth's field theoretical migratory paths of birds between summer and winter quarters may be calculated (Figs. 8–11). The calculated tracks and the actually observed migratory routes agree well. This is also confirmed by radar and other observations of migratory directions in areas of different dip angles (Fig. 13). Displacing migrating birds to areas of smaller dip angles (= lower magnetic latitudes) results in predeterminable shifts in the birds migratory direction (Figs. 5, 6). The hypothesis also accounts for the so far unexplained orientation behaviour of transequatorial migrants under the magnetic equator.A very simple model of this hypothetical compass mechanism may be based on the assumption of the sensor axis is supposed to correspond to the apparent angle of dip when moving in the migratory direction. In this position the difference between the apparent angle of dip and the angle of the sensor is zero. Any change in the direction of movement, however, will result in a difference leading to a response of an assumed receptor. When maintaining the zero difference the bird invariably sticks to its migratory course. The proposed mechanism is a null instrument unaffected by changes in field intensity and not depending on the measurement of absolute values.  相似文献

Summary Recent studies of the lekking great snipe (Gallinago media) have shown that male mating success increases with display rate and the amount of white on the tail. An obvious question then arises: what is setting the limits to male display rate and to the evolution of even whiter tails? In this study the costs of these two traits are considered. In the case of the white on the tail, almost no predation was observed during the display period. However, predation on the winter grounds and/or during migration cannot be ruled out. Males differed in the amount of white on the tail between years. It is suggested that increasing the amount of white is costly, though the reason for this is still unknown. In the case of display rate, it is shown that predation cannot be a considerable cost, again because of the near absence of predation on the leks. Instead, it is shown that male displays are energetically costly. The daily energy expenditure of displaying males was estimated to be on average 4 times the basal metabolic rate, which is close to the supposed maximum sustainable work load for birds. Furthermore, males lost on average 1.8 g per h (1.7% of the body mass) which is about 7.2 g (6.8%) during a night of display activity. Males do gain some weight during the day when no displays are performed but loose on average 9 g during an 11-day period in the early part of the breeding season. These results indicate that high energetic demands set the limits to male display performance and that males do not have to trade off the benefit of attracting females by their displays against a cost of attracting predators. In recent years, there has been a marked increase in the amount of ambient air quality data collected near Marcellus Shale oil and gas development (OGD) sites. We integrated air measurement data from over 30 datasets totaling approximately 200 sampling locations nearby to Marcellus Shale development sites, focusing on 11 air pollutants that can be associated with OGD operations: fine particulate matter (PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), acetaldehyde, benzene, ethylbenzene, formaldehyde, n-hexane, toluene, xylenes, and hydrogen sulfide (H2S). We evaluated these data to determine whether there is evidence of community-level air quality impacts of potential health concern, making screening-level comparisons of air monitoring data with acute and chronic health-based air comparison values (HBACVs). Based on the available air monitoring data, we found that only a small fraction of measurements exceeded HBACVs, which is similar to findings from integrative air quality assessments for other shale gas plays. Therefore, the data indicate that air pollutant levels within the Marcellus Shale development region typically are below HBACV exceedance levels; however, the sporadic HBACV exceedances warrant further investigation to determine whether they may be related to specific site characteristics, or certain operations or sources. Like any air monitoring dataset, there is uncertainty as to how well the available Marcellus Shale air monitoring data characterize the range of potential exposures for people living nearby to OGD sites. Given the lesser amounts of air monitoring data available for locations within 1,000 feet of OGD sites as compared to locations between 0.2 and 1 miles, the presence of potential concentration hotspots cannot be ruled out. Additional air monitoring data, in particular more real-time data to further characterize short-term peak concentrations associated with episodic events, are needed to provide for more refined assessments of potential health risks from Marcellus Shale development.

Implications: While there is now a sizable amount of ambient air monitoring data collected nearby to OGD activities in the Marcellus Shale region, these data are currently scattered among different databases and studies. As part of an integrative assessment of Marcellus Shale air quality impacts, ambient air data are compiled for a subset of criteria air pollutants and hazardous air pollutants that have been associated with OGD activities, and compared to acute and chronic health-based air comparison values to help assess the air-related public health impacts of Marcellus Shale development.  相似文献
