Chemical-looping with oxygen uncoupling (CLOU) is a novel method to burn solid fuels in gas-phase oxygen without the need for an energy intensive air separation unit. The carbon dioxide from the combustion is inherently separated from the rest of the flue gases. CLOU is based on chemical-looping combustion (CLC) and involves three steps in two reactors, one air reactor where a metal oxide captures oxygen from the combustion air (step 1), and a fuel reactor where the metal oxide releases oxygen in the gas-phase (step 2) and where this gas-phase oxygen reacts with a fuel (step 3). In other proposed schemes for using chemical-looping combustion of solid fuels there is a need for an intermediate gasification step of the char with steam or carbon dioxide to form reactive gaseous compounds which then react with the oxygen carrier particles. The gasification of char with H2O and CO2 is inherently slow, resulting in slow overall rates of reaction. This slow gasification is avoided in the proposed process, since there is no intermediate gasification step needed and the char reacts directly with gas-phase oxygen. The process demands an oxygen carrier which has the ability to react with the oxygen in the combustion air in the air reactor but which decomposes to a reduced metal oxide and gas-phase oxygen in the fuel reactor. Three metal oxide systems with suitable thermodynamic properties have been identified, and a thermal analysis has shown that Mn2O3/Mn3O4 and CuO/Cu2O have suitable thermodynamic properties, although Co3O4/CoO may also be a possibility. However, the latter system has the disadvantage of an overall endothermic reaction in the fuel reactor. Results from batch laboratory fluidized bed tests with CuO and a gaseous and solid fuel are presented. The reaction rate of petroleum coke is approximately a factor 50 higher using CLOU in comparison to the reaction rate of the same fuel with an iron-based oxygen carrier in normal CLC. 相似文献

Residential lead (Pb) contamination, resulting from decades-long use of leaded gasoline and lead-based paint, is likely to
be present in soils in most urban areas. A screening level sampling effort demonstrated that Lubbock, Texas, USA, like other
cities of its age and size, has areas of elevated soil Pb. This effort was based on soil sampling performed on residential,
commercial and thoroughfare properties. The focus of this study was to investigate that component of soil contamination due
to combustion of leaded gasoline. Soils were collected from the 1–2 cm surface layer from street-side property borders, well
away from buildings that might lead to soil contamination from leaded paint chips. All samples were analyzed for Pb after
a 1 M HNO3 mild extraction to determine the amount of bioavailable Pb. Two of three transects through the city demonstrated significant
trends of decreasing Pb concentrations with distance from the city center, paralleling a decrease in developed property age.
Peak soil Pb concentrations outside city development was 4.9 ± 0.6 mg/kg while the median concentration for the city was 35.4 mg/kg.
Peak soil Pb concentrations in the city center ranged from 90.0 to 174.0 mg/kg and decreased exponentially to 6.0–9.0 mg/kg

Understanding patterns, dynamics, and drivers of land use is crucial for improving our ability to cope with sustainability challenges. The human appropriation of net primary production (HANPP) framework provides a set of integrated socio-ecological indicators that quantify how land use alters energy flows in ecosystems via land conversions and biomass harvest. Thus, HANPP enables researchers to systematically and consistently assess the outcome of changes in land cover and land-use intensity across spatio-temporal scales. Yet, fine-scale HANPP assessments are so far missing, an information important to address site-specific ecological implications of land use. Here, we provide such an assessment for Europe at a 1-km scale for the years 1990, 2000, and 2006. The assessment was based on a consistent land-use/biomass flow dataset derived from statistical data, remote sensing maps, and a dynamic global vegetation model. We find that HANPP in Europe amounted to ~43 % of potential productivity, well above the global average of ~25 %, with little variation in the European average since 1990. HANPP was highest in Central Europe and lower in Northern and Southern Europe. At the regional level, distinct changes in land-use intensity were observed, most importantly the decline of cropland areas and yields following the breakdown of socialism in Eastern Europe and the subsequent recovery after 2000, or strong dynamics related to storm events that resulted in massive salvage loggings. In sum, however, these local dynamics cancelled each other out at the aggregate level. We conclude that this finding warrants further research into aspects of the scale-dependency of dynamics and stability of land use. 相似文献

Pharmacopollution is a public health and environmental outcome of some active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) and endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDC) dispersed through water and/or soil. Its most important sources are the pharmaceutical industry, healthcare facilities (e.g., hospitals), livestock, aquaculture, and households (patients’ excretion and littering). The last source is the focus of this article. Research questions are “What is the Household Waste Medicine (HWM) phenomenon?”, “How HWM and pharmacopollution are related?”, and “Why is a reverse logistic system necessary for HWM in Brazil?” This article followed the seven steps proposed by Rother (2007) for a systematic review based on the Cochrane Handbook and the National Health Service (NHS) Center for Reviews Dissemination (CDR) Report. The HWM phenomenon brings many environmental, public health, and, social challenges. The insufficient data is a real challenge to assessing potential human health risks and API concentrations. Therefore, the hazard of long-term exposure to low concentrations of pharmacopollutants and the combined effects of API mixtures is still uncertain. HWM are strongly related to pharmacopollution, as this review shows. The Brazilian HWM case is remarkable because it is the fourth pharmaceutical market (US$ 65,971 billion), with a wide number of private pharmacies and drugstores (3.3: 10,000 pharmacy/inhabitants), self-medication habits, and no national take-back program. The HWM generation is estimated in 56.6 g/per capita, or 10,800 t/year. The absence of a reverse logistics for HWM can lead to serious environmental and public health challenges. Conditional mating strategies enable individuals to modulate their mating behaviour depending on ‘individual status’ to maximise fitness. Theory predicts that variation in individual quality can lead to differences in mating preferences. However, empirical evidence is scarce particular in terms of variation in male and female strategies. Here, we experimentally investigated quality-dependent variation in mating preferences concerning reliable quality indicators in Pelvicachromis taeniatus, a colourful cichlid fish with mutual mate choice and ornamentation. Males as well as females were artificially manipulated in phenotypic quality by different feeding regimes. Ornamentation was connected to individual quality in both sexes. Males and females showed conditional mating strategies in different directions. Males showed prudent choice by preferring females of similar quality. In contrast to males, low-quality females preferred highly ornamented males, whereas high-quality females showed neither preferences for high- nor for low-quality males. The results suggest that individuals aim for specific benefits depending on individual quality. Furthermore, the conflicting conditional mating preferences of males and females might lead to sexual conflict, implicating a highly dynamical mating system that evolves even in absence of environmental changes. 相似文献

In social insects, it is assumed that signals of the queen inform nestmates about her reproductive status. Thus, workers forego
their own reproduction if the queen signals high fertility. In hemimetabolous termites, little is known about reproductive
inhibition, but evidence exists for a royal-pair control. Workers of lower termites exhibit a high developmental flexibility
and are potentially able to become reproductives, but the presence of a fertile reproductive restrains them from reaching
sexual maturity. The nature of this control, however, remains unknown. Here, we report on qualitative differences in cuticular
hydrocarbon profiles between queens and workers of the basal drywood termite Cryptotermes secundus. Queens were characterized by a shift to long-chained and branched hydrocarbons. Most remarkably, similar chemical patterns
are regarded as fertility cues of reproductives in social Hymenoptera. This might suggest that both groups of social insects
convergently evolved similar chemical signatures. The present study provides deeper insights into how termites might have
socially exploited these signatures from sexual communication in their cockroach-like ancestor.

Two strains of microorganisms that both use sugar as energy resource, but which may choose between two different pathways of ATP production, are studied from a game-theory point of view. We consider these pathways as distinct strategies to which we assign payoffs that are proportional to the expected steady-state number of individuals sustainable on the basis of these strategies. In a certain parameter range, we find that the payoffs fulfil the conditions for the prisoner's dilemma. Therefore, cooperative behaviour is unlikely to occur, unless additional factors intervene. In fact, the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae uses a competitive strategy by fermenting sugars even under aerobic conditions, thus wasting its own resource. The simple quantifiable structure of the model should enable access to an experimentally determined payoff matrix. 相似文献

The autopsy findings of a fetus with deletion of the long arm of chromosome 8 are described. Many of the features are similar to those of the tricho-rhino-phalangeal syndromes, types I and II, which are associated with deletions on chromosome 8q24. Other findings in this case, such as total absence of the corpus callosum and intestinal malrotation, have not been described in these syndromes. Genes involved in the development of the latter malformations may reside in adjacent regions on the long arm of chromosome 8. An elevated serum level of beta human chorionic gonadotropin (βhCG) was found during pregnancy. This aberration should be included with other chromosomal disorders which may be detected by this test. 相似文献
