The homogeneous degradation of the polychlorinated n-alkane, 1,2,9,10-tetrachlorodecane (T4C10), was studied in aqueous solutions of hydrogen peroxide, including Fenton and photo-Fenton reaction conditions. All solutions were adjusted to a pH of 2.8 and an ionic strength of 0.1 M NaClO4 prior to photolysis. T4C10 (2 x 10(-6) M) was substantially degraded by the H2O2/UV system (1.0 x 10(-2) M H2O2), with 60% disappearance in 20 min of irradiation in a photoreactor equipped with 300 nm lamps of light intensity 3.6 x 10(-5) Ein L(-1) min(-1) (established by ferrioxalate actinometry). The reaction produced stoichiometric amounts of chloride ion indicating complete dechlorination of the chlorinated n-alkane. T4C10 degraded very slowly under Fenton (Fe2+/H2O2/dark) and Fenton-like (Fe3+/H2O2/dark) conditions. However, when the same solutions were irradiated, T4C10 degraded more rapidly than in the H2O2/UV system, with 61% disappearance in 10 min of exposure. The rapid degradation is related to the enhanced degradation of hydrogen peroxide to oxidizing *OH radicals under photo-Fenton conditions. Degradation was inhibited in both the H2O2/UV and photo-Fenton systems by the addition of KI and tert-butyl alcohol due to *OH scavenging. 相似文献

Commercially known Ahmer oxide paints are prepared from raw material mainly composed of red iron oxides (hematite) and iron oxyhydroxides. The raw material used in manufacturing of Ahmer oxide comes from some localities in southwest Sinai such as Abu Thor, Allouga, and El lehian. The adsorption of uranium and other radioelements on iron oxides could make the raw material (red iron oxides) and their products environmentally hazardous. The studied samples were subjected to radiometric analysis using NaI (Tl) gamma-ray spectrometer. The average activity concentration of U, Th, Ra, and K are 108.7, 458.8, 88.8, and 627.5?Bq?kg?1, respectively in raw material and 136.4, 14.6, 58.3, and 95.9?Bq?kg?1 in Ahmer oxide. High values of activity concentrations of 238U, 226Ra, and 40K were recorded in Allouga and El lehian raw material. High radioactivities of Allouga and El lehian raw material are mainly attributed to the presence of torbernite, zircon, and monazite, in addition to adsorbed elemental uranium in Ahmer oxide. absorbed dose rate (D), annual effective dose equivalent, radium equivalent activity (Raeq), external hazard index (Hex), and internal hazard index (Hin), as well as representative gamma index (Iγ) were determined from the activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th, and 40K. The rapid urbanization and industrialization is causing worldwide water pollution, calling for advanced cleaning methods. For instance, pollutant adsorption on magnetic oxides is efficient and very practical due to the easy separation from solutions by an magnetic field. Here we review the synthesis and performance of magnetic oxides such as iron oxides, spinel ferrites, and perovskite oxides for water remediation. We present structural, optical, and magnetic properties. Magnetic oxides are also promising photocatalysts for the degradation of organic pollutants. Antimicrobial activities and adsorption of heavy metals and radionucleides are also discussed.

Susceptibility and response of bivalves, the clam Ruditapes decussatus, to zinc (Zn) were studied by monitoring behavior using valve movement and some biochemical parameters. The LC50 was 4.1 mg L?1 at 7 days. Depuration of Zn from their tissues was also followed. Accumulation of Zn increased with concentration and duration of exposure. After 20 days, Zn caused impairment of valve movement as well as the antioxidant system, decreasing glutathione and protein levels and increasing the lipid peroxidation which is indicative of oxidative damage. Results suggested that behavior and biochemical parameters of clam R. decussatus were sensitive and suitable responses for assessing the effects of Zn on the aquatic ecosystems. It could be concluded that there is a time–dose–response relationship of Zn with behavior and oxidative stress of R. decussatus. 相似文献

This study aimed to investigate the genotoxic potential of chemicals present along the course of the river Nile using frequencies of micronuclei (MN) and nuclear lesions (NL) in erythrocytes of Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus niloticus and African catfish Clarias gariepinus, as biomarkers. Results showed that most of the physicochemical parameters detected and heavy metal concentrations were significantly higher in the water collected from the estuaries of the river Nile compared to other sites of the upper Nile. The frequencies of MN and NL in peripheral blood erythrocytes of Nile tilapia and African catfish were significantly higher in estuary sites in Damietta and Rosetta compared to upper sites. The lowest level of genotoxicity was observed at two sites (Aswan and Kena), considered to be less contaminated. Our results suggested that higher frequencies of MN and NL determined at Damietta and Rosetta sites may be indicative of damage produced by pollutants in these areas. The most remarkable result was that MN and NL frequencies appear to be strongly related to water quality at different sites examined, indicating that MN frequencies may serve as a reliable biomarker for testing genotoxicity in situ. The positive correlation between MN and NL induction suggested that NL may be a useful complementary assay for genotoxicity analyses when fish are used as experimental animals. It was also found that seasonal variations in MN and NL frequencies might contribute to a better understanding of genotoxic responses in the field. The use of fish as indicator organisms for monitoring the presence of genotoxic-inducing contaminants in the environment seemed justified because the effects of exposure to a “complex mixture” such as river water were obtained. Nile tilapia appears to be a more suitable bioindicator species than African catfish in studying genotoxic chemical pollution in the river Nile attributed to a higher sensitivity. 相似文献

Surface and bottom water samples were collected on a monthly basis from six locations in the Alexandria Western Harbour between April 2002 and March 2003. Total nitrogen, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, total phosphorus, reactive phosphate and silicate were analysed. The average content of total nitrogen ranged from 81.1 to 65.7?µmol?l?1 in the surface and bottom waters, respectively, while ammonia ranged from 13.77 to 15.79?µmol?l?1 in surface and bottom waters, respectively. Also, the average concentration of nitrite was relatively higher in surface waters than in bottom waters (0.89 and 0.61?µmol?l?1, respectively). The results of this study also indicated a considerable temporal variation in nitrate concentrations which ranged from 1.12 to 13.83?µmol?l?1. Total phosphorus displayed an irregular pattern throughout the year, ranging from 1.9 to 11.8?µmol?l?1 in surface waters and from 1.7 to 9.1?µmol?l?1 in bottom waters. The results of PO4-P analysis showed higher values in surface waters (0.28–2.75?µmol?l?1) than in bottom waters (0.10–1.70?µmol?l?1). The average concentration of silicates was relatively lower in the surface than in the bottom waters (8.97 and 10.1?µmol?l?1, respectively). The analysis of variance (ANOVA) among seasons and sites revealed significant differences for ammonia, total nitrogen and phosphate, while nitrate showed no significant differences among stations.
