This paper discusses heavy metal removal from wastewater by batch study and filtration technique through low-cost coarse media. Batch study has indicated that more than 90% copper (Cu) with concentration up to 50 mg/l could be removed from the solution with limestone quantity above 20 ml (equivalent to 56 g), which indicates the importance of limestone media in the removal process. This indicates that the removal of Cu is influenced by the media and not solely by the pH. Batch experiments using limestone and activated carbon indicate that both limestone and activated carbon had similar metal-removal efficiency (about 95%). Results of the laboratory-scale filtration technique using limestone particles indicated that above 90% removal of Cu was achieved at retention time of 2.31 h, surface-loading rate of 4.07 m3/m2 per day and Cu loading of 0.02 kg/m3 per day. Analyses of the limestone media after filtration indicated that adsorption and absorption processes were among the mechanisms involved in the removal processes. The pivot point of delta in Tarbela dam has reached at about 10.6 km from the dam face which may result in blocking of tunnels. Tarbela delta was modeled from 1979 to 2060 using hec-6 model. Initially, the model was calibrated for year 1999 and validated for years 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2006 by involving the data of sediment concentration, reservoir cross sections (73 range lines), elevation-area capacity curves, and inflows and outflows from the reservoir. Then, the model was used to generate future scenarios, i.e., run-1, run-2, and run-3 with pool levels; 428, 442, and 457 m, respectively, till 2060. Results of run-1 and run-2 showed advancement to choke the tunnels by 2010 and 2030, respectively. Finally, in run-3, the advancement was further delayed showing that tunnels 1 and 2 will be choked by year 2050 and pivot point will reach at 6.4 km from the dam face. 相似文献

Mangroves forests are facing serious stresses which jeopardize their sustainability and their existence in Pakistan. Theses
coastal forests are found in the Indus delta in Sindh and the coastal areas of Sonmiani, Kalmat and Gawatar bay in Balochistan.
A significant reduction in the fresh water supply and increased marine water pollution in from industries as well as over
harvesting of mangroves and fishes by the local peoples, sedimentation, population stress and coastal erosion are usually
considered to be the immediate causes of mangrove loss in Pakistan. Various Projects have been under taken in the past and
in current scenario to conserve the resources of mangrove areas. Strong planning with the collaboration of the local institutes
at the grass-root levels will be helpful to strengthen their capacity and to achieve the targets easily, and they will also
help in achieving the conservation goals in a sustainable manner. It is predictable that large-scale plantation of this mangroves
species in these areas would increase the resources in coastal areas, resulting economic benefit to the local people. 相似文献
