Algal turfs are the major primary producing component on many coral reefs and this production supports higher levels in the
complex reef trophic web. Rates of metabolism of algal turfs are related positively to water motion, consistent with limitation
by the diffusion of a substance through a boundary layer. Based on engineering mass transfer theory, we hypothesized that
photosynthesis of algal turfs is controlled by rates of mass transfer and responses of photosynthesis to increasing flow speed
should be predicted by engineering correlations. This hypothesis was tested in ten experiments where photosynthesis was estimated
in a flume/respirometer from changes in dissolved oxygen at eight flow speeds between 0.08 and 0.52 m/s. Flow in the flume
and over the reef at Kaneohe Bay, Oahu, Hawaii was estimated using hot-film thermistor and electromagnetic current meters.
Rates of photosynthesis were related positively to flow in all experiments and plots of the log of the average Sherwood number
(Sh
meas) versus log Reynolds number (Re
D) for each experiment are lower than predicted for mass transfer through a turbulent boundary layer. Algal turf-covered plates
are characterized as hydrodynamically transitional to fully rough surfaces and the lower than predicted slopes suggest that
roughness reduces rates of mass transfer. A negative correlation between algal turf biomass and slopes of the log Sh
meas−log Re
D plots suggests that mass transfer to algal turfs is affected significantly by the physical structure of the algal community.
Patterns of photosynthesis based on changes in dissolved oxygen and dissolved inorganic carbon concentrations (DIC) indicate
that the flow speed effect is not the result of increased flux of oxygen from the algal turfs, and combined with the short
response time to flow speed, suggest that DIC may limit rates of photosynthesis. Although there are differences between flow
in the flume and flow over algal turfs on the reef, these results suggest that photosynthesis is controlled, at least in part,
by mass transfer. The chemical engineering approach provides a framework to pose further testable hypotheses about how algal
canopy height, flow oscillation, turbulence, and substratum roughness may modulate rates of metabolism of coral reef algal

In butterflies and other insects, fecundity generally increases with female adult weight. Hence, most butterflies are essentially "capital breeders", because nutrients acquired during the larval stage are stored and subsequently used for egg production during the adult stage. However, in some species, males transfer a large nutritious ejaculate to the female at mating. These females can partly be characterized as "income breeders", and female mass can potentially be decoupled from fecundity to some extent. In the gift-giving green-veined white butterfly Pieris napi, it has been shown that female fecundity and longevity increase with number of matings and also that females mature at smaller size under poor food conditions compared to males. So it has been suggested that females can compensate for their smaller size through nuptial feeding. Here we test this hypothesis in P. napi by assessing female fecundity and longevity in relation to female mass and polyandry. The results showed no support for the hypothesis. Smaller females were not capable of increasing their mating rate to compensate for a low weight at eclosion. Instead, larger females remated sooner. Also, smaller females suffered from both a reduced daily and total fecundity compared to larger females and this decrease in fecundity was independent of female mating status, i.e. females allowed to mate only once and multiply mated females suffered to the same extent from their smaller size. 相似文献

A few species of the weakly electric snoutfish, the African freshwater family Mormyridae, have been reported to vocalise. However, allopatric populations of a single species were never compared. Members of three allopatric Marcusenius macrolepidotus populations, originating from the Upper Zambezi River in Namibia, the Buzi River (Mozambique), and the Incomati River system in South Africa, vocalised with pulsatile growl- and tonal hoot sounds in dyadic confrontation experiments. A high rate of growling accompanied territorial and agonistic interactions and also non-threatening interactions between males and females, which in one pair appeared to be courtship. Growl sound characteristics of M. macrolepidotus from the Incomati system differed from those of the Upper Zambezi in a significantly higher frequency of the first harmonic (mean, 355 Hz vs 266 Hz). The two vocalising males from the Buzi River generated growls about twice as long as the other fish. Furthermore, the growl pulse period was about 4 ms in M. macrolepidotus from the Upper Zambezi River and from the Incomati system, but 6 ms in M. macrolepidotus from the Buzi River. Hoots were only observed in agonistic encounters. Hoot oscillograms showed a sinusoidal waveform, and the mean duration of this sound was similar in Incomati system fish (mean, 161 ms), Upper Zambezi fish (172 ms) and Buzi fish (103 and 145 ms for the two vocalising individuals). The mean frequency of the first hoot harmonic was higher in Incomati system fish (326 Hz) than in Upper Zambezi fish (245 Hz). Both growl and hoot occurred only in the presence of conspecifics, probably signalling the presence and condition of an opponent, territory owner or potential mate. This is the first evidence for (1) sound production and acoustical communication in another species and genus, M. macrolepidotus, from southern Africa to be (2) geographically differentiated. 相似文献

Many agricultural, biological, and environmental studies involve detecting temporal changes of a response variable, based on data observed at sampling sites in a spatial region and repeatedly over several time points. That is, data are repeated measures over time and are potentially correlated across space. The traditional repeated-measures analysis allows for time dependence but assumes that the observations at different sampling sites are mutually independent, which may not be suitable for field data that are correlated across space. In this paper, a nonparametric large-sample inference procedure is developed to assess the time effects while accounting for the spatial dependence using a block bootstrap. The occurrence and relative abundance of tissue (arm) regeneration in the ophiuroid, Ophiacantha bidentata (Retzius), was examined in individuals collected primarily among colonies of the deep-water coral Lophelia pertusa off the southeastern United States. Seven deep-water coral sites (384–756 m), located between Cape Lookout, NC, and Cape
Canaveral, FL, were sampled in June 2004 using a manned submersible. The presence of regenerative tissue was evaluated by
visual inspection of each individual ophiuroid, and the proportion of regenerating arms per individual was examined relative
to size of individual, geographic location, and depth of collection. Ophiacantha bidentata, the dominant brittle star collected, commonly displayed signs of sublethal injury with over 60% of individuals displaying
some evidence of regeneration. These levels of regeneration rival those reported for shallow-water ophiuroids. Larger individuals
(>6.5 mm disc size) had a higher incidence of regeneration than smaller individuals. Size of individual and percent of regeneration
were negatively correlated with depth. Although O. bidentata was significantly less abundant in southern versus northern sites, ophiuroid abundance did not appear to be influenced by
amount or density of coral substratum. Presence of dense aggregations of O. bidentata indicates that they are an important component of the invertebrate assemblage associated with deep-water coral habitat especially
in the northern part of the study area. Assuming that observed frequencies of injury and subsequent regeneration represent
predation events then dense ophiuroid aggregations in deep-water coral habitats represent an important renewable trophic resource

Laboratory and modeling studies were conducted to assess the potential performance of a permeable reactive barrier constructed of a natural zeolite material at the West Valley Demonstration Project in western New York State. The results of laboratory column tests indicated that the barrier material would be effective at removing strontium from groundwater under natural gradient conditions. Two one-dimensional contaminant transport models were developed to interpret the data. A single-solute retardation factor model provided good agreement with the column test data, but time-consuming extraction and analysis of the zeolite material was required to parameterize the model. A preliminary six-solute model was also developed based on the assumption of competitive cation exchange as the primary removal mechanism. Both models yielded similar predictions of the long-term performance of the barrier, but the cation exchange model predicted higher effluent concentrations during the first 1000 pore volumes of operation. The cation exchange framework has several advantages, including the ability to calibrate the model using only data from column effluent samples, and the ability to account for site-specific differences in the groundwater cation composition. There is now overwhelming documentation of large-scale chemical recovery from surface water acidification in Europe, but to date there has been little documentation of biological recovery. Modelling studies based on current emission reduction plans in Europe indicate that there will be further chemical recovery. The uncertainties in these scenarios mainly relate to the future behavior of nitrogen in the ecosystem and the effects of climate change. Four major climate-related confounding factors that may influence the chemical and biological recovery process are: i) increased frequency and severity of sea-salt episodes; ii) increased frequency and severity of drought; iii) increased turnover of organic carbon; iv) increased mineralization of nitrogen. International cooperative work to abate acidification has so far been very successful, but there is still a long way to go, and many potential setbacks. It is essential that future development of water chemistry and aquatic biota in acidified waterbodies continue to be monitored in relation to further emission reductions of S and N and future effects of climate change. 相似文献
