Spermatozoa vary greatly in size and shape among species across the animal kingdom. Postcopulatory sexual selection is thought to be the major evolutionary force driving this diversity. In contrast, less is known about how sperm size varies among populations of the same species. Here, we investigate geographic variation in sperm size in barn swallows Hirundo rustica, a socially monogamous passerine with a wide Holarctic breeding distribution. We included samples from seven populations and three subspecies: five populations of ssp. rustica in Europe (Czech, Italy, Norway, Spain, and Ukraine), one population of ssp. transitiva in Israel, and one population of ssp. erythrogaster in Canada. All sperm traits (head length, midpiece length, tail length, and total length) varied significantly among populations. The variation among the European rustica populations was much lower than the differences among subspecies, indicating that sperm traits reflect phylogenetic distance. We also performed a test of the relationship between the coefficient of between-male variation in total sperm length and extrapair paternity levels across different populations within a species. Recent studies have found a strong negative relationship between sperm size variation and extrapair paternity among species. Here, we show a similar negative relationship among six barn swallow populations, which suggests that the variance in male sperm length in a population is shaped by the strength of stabilizing postcopulatory sexual selection.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

Rural communities worldwide face a decrease of critical ecosystem services caused by replacement of native forests by commercial plantations. Replacement of native forest by commercial plantations decreases water provisioning, with possible negative impacts over well-being. We tested this hypothesis in Central Chile. We assessed subjective well-being (SWB) and local perceptions of changes in forest cover and water provision among 78 rural families. We also assessed if the Shifting Baseline Syndrome (SBS) affects the perceptions of environmental changes and their implications in SWB. Individuals perceived less forest cover than 20 years ago, and this is seen as a factor of decreased livelihood, availability of forest products, and water provisioning for households. People also reported less water available than 20 years ago. The main drivers associated with decreased water provision were the establishment of pine plantations (44% of individuals) and drought (44%). A better-off SWB was associated with perception of lower rate of deforestation. The perceptions of forest degradation and its association to SWB are affected by SBS. Paradoxically, a better-off SWB was also associated with an improvement of water quality, although the quantity and quality of water have decreased according to biophysical data, which ought to decrease the SWB. Impacts of environmental degradation in SWB are masked by factors such as more infrastructure for drinking water, assisted by governments. This masking of environmental degradation reduces the opportunity to avoid negative impacts over well-being among rural communities that are dependent on assistance around the world.  相似文献

Mercury is transported globally in the atmosphere mostly in gaseous elemental form (GEM, \( {\text{Hg}}_{\text{gas}}^{0} \) ), but still few worldwide studies taking into account different and contrasted environmental settings are available in a single publication. This work presents and discusses data from Argentina, Bolivia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Chile, China, Croatia, Finland, Italy, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Slovenia and Venezuela. We classified the information in four groups: (1) mining districts where this contaminant poses or has posed a risk for human populations and/or ecosystems; (2) cities, where the concentration of atmospheric mercury could be higher than normal due to the burning of fossil fuels and industrial activities; (3) areas with natural emissions from volcanoes; and (4) pristine areas where no anthropogenic influence was apparent. All the surveys were performed using portable LUMEX RA-915 series atomic absorption spectrometers. The results for cities fall within a low GEM concentration range that rarely exceeds 30 ng m?3, that is, 6.6 times lower than the restrictive ATSDR threshold (200 ng m?3) for chronic exposure to this pollutant. We also observed this behavior in the former mercury mining districts, where few data were above 200 ng m?3. We noted that high concentrations of GEM are localized phenomena that fade away in short distances. However, this does not imply that they do not pose a risk for those working in close proximity to the source. This is the case of the artisanal gold miners that heat the Au–Hg amalgam to vaporize mercury. In this respect, while GEM can be truly regarded as a hazard, because of possible physical–chemical transformations into other species, it is only under these localized conditions, implying exposure to high GEM concentrations, which it becomes a direct risk for humans.  相似文献

Occupational Health and Safety in Spain has improved considerably over the last decade, most likely due to a new concept where an overall concept of safety culture is defined. Important changes in industrial safety, hygiene, and psychosocial factors present an optimistic panorama for the future of Spain. Despite this general improvement, according to the European Convergence Program, Spanish statistics still offer far from good safety results. In fact, according to 1997 official statistics, Spain had the highest incidence rate for nonfatal occupational accidents of all European Union (EU) countries, and occupied third place for fatal accidents. This paper summarizes the organizational structure of the Spanish National System of Health & Safety at Work, its effective health and safety laws, and statistics on the Spanish work environment obtained from III Spanish National Survey on Work Conditions (1997). The researchers hope that the findings of this work will have an impact on Spanish industry that will subsequently bring about improvements in work conditions and develop assessment and intervention models in occupational health and safety, from a theoretical position integrating environmental, human, and organizational factors.  相似文献

This paper is the first comprehensive survey of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in coastal sediments in Bahia Blanca, Argentina, and provides useful information on their levels of concentration, composition, and sources of these pollutants. The total concentrations of PAHs ranged from 15 to 10,260 ng g???1. The highest contents (mean 3,315 ng g???1) of total PAHs in marine sediments were found in the inner channels of the estuary, while the lower ones (204 ng g???1) belong to samples collected far away from contamination sources. The global average recorded in this study (1,500 ng g???1) indicates that the studied area lies within the referenced category of industrialized coastal zones under chronic pollution. The diagenetic PAH contribution was found to be negligible at all sampled locations; however, the calculation of molecular ratios determined an overimposition of pyrolitic PAHs over the petrogenic input. Further, the use of principal components analysis (PCA) clearly separated ring group compounds and enabled the determination of pyrolitic/combustion PAHs dominancy.  相似文献

A laser induced fluorescence (LIF) instrument has been developed to measure tropospheric NO2 with low detection limit. The instrument design, development and first measurements are reported. There are also details of the temporal gate system built for the fluorescence acquisition. The instrument is able to make fast measurements (up to 4 Hz) and shows a limit of detection of 10 pptv/60 s. Continuous observations (2 weeks in summer 2007) in a small town in central Italy were used to test the performance of the instrument and to study the photochemistry of ozone in a background site. LIF and a commercial chemiluminescence (CL) instrument simultaneous observations of NO2 show a good linearity (LIF = 1.02 CL + 0.6 (ppb), R2 = 0.98) but there is a bias of the commercial instrument of about 0.60 ppbv on average. The overestimation of the CL system is probably due to conversion of NOy species into NO by the molybdenum converter used in the CL instrument to detect NO2. Analysis of 1 s data is used to test the instrument response and the coupling between nitrogen oxides and ozone.  相似文献

Bromine chemistry in the marine boundary layer is recognized to play an important role through catalytic ozone destruction, changes to the atmospheric oxidising capacity (by changing the OH/HO2 and NO/NO2 ratio) and oxidation of compounds such as dimethyl sulphide (DMS). However, the chemistry of bromine in polluted environments is not well understood and its effects are thought to be inhibited by reactions involving NOx (NO2 & NO). This paper describes long-path Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (DOAS) observations of bromine oxide (BrO) at a semi-polluted coastal site in Roscoff, France. Significant concentrations of BrO (up to 7.5 ± 1.0 pptv) were measured during daytime, indicating the presence of unknown sources or efficient recycling of reactive bromine from bromine nitrate (BrONO2), which should be the major reservoir for bromine in a high NOx environment. These measurements indicate that bromine chemistry can play an important role in polluted environments.  相似文献

Four different sample treatment methods for the determination of trace elements have been compared: a total digestion with HNO3-H2O2-HF using microwave, and three different standardized methods of fractionation: BCR three-steps sequential extraction, USEPA standard 3050B and ISO standard 11466. The four treatment methods were applied to the determination of Cu and Ni in four samples collected in different areas of Cienfuegos Bay (Cuba). The location of samples and the analytes were selected on the basis of results obtained by previous studies. Analyses following total digestion and BCR three-steps procedure were performed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy whereas analyses following EPA and ISO procedures were performed by flame atomic absorption spectroscopy. The results obtained have been compared with an estimated anthropic fraction evaluated in each sampling point as the difference between the total concentration and an estimated background concentration level. The BCR three-steps provided the best approximation of the estimated anthropic fraction and was therefore applied also in the determination of Pb and Cd for further consideration.  相似文献

Goal, Scope and Background Within the non-methane hydrocarbons, alkanes constitute the largest fraction of the anthropogenic emissions of volatile organic compounds. For the case of cyclic alkanes, tropospheric degradation is expected to be initiated mainly by OH reactions in the gas phase. Nevertheless, Cl atom reaction rate constants are generally one order of magnitude larger than those of OH. In the present work, the reaction of cyclooctane with Cl atoms has been studied within the temperature range of 279–333 K. Methods The kinetic study has been carried out using the fast flow tube technique coupled to mass spectrometry detection. The reaction has been studied under low pressure conditions, p=1 Torr, with helium as the carrier gas. Results The measured room temperature rate constant is very high, k=(2.63±0.54)×10−10 cm3molecule−1s−1, around 20 times larger than that for the corresponding OH reaction. We also report the results of the rate coefficients obtained at different temperatures: k = (3.5±1.2)×10−10 exp[(−79±110)/T] cm3 molecule−1 s−1 within the range of 279–333 K. This reaction shows an activation energy value close to zero. Discussion Quantitative formation of HCl has been observed, confirming the mechanism through H-atom abstraction. The reactivity of cyclic alkanes towards Cl atoms is clearly dependent on the number of CH2 groups in the molecule, as is shown by the increase in the rate constant when the length of the organic chain increases. This increase is very high for the small cyclic alkanes and it seems that the reactions are approaching the collision-controlled limit for cyclohexane and cyclooctane. Conclusions These results show that gas-phase reaction with Cl in marine or coastal areas is an efficient sink (competing with the gas phase, OH initiated degradation) for the Earth’s emissions of cyclooctane, with a Cl-based lifetime ranging from 11 to 2000 hours, depending on the location and time of day. Recommendations and Perspectives Cl and OH fast reactions with cyclooctane are expected to define the lifetime of cyclooctane emissions to the atmosphere. The degradation of cyclooctane occurs in a short period of time and consequently (under conditions of low atmospheric mass transport), close to the emission sources enabling a significant contribution to local effects, like the formation of photochemical smog. Goal, Scope and Background One of the burning problems of our industrial society is the high consumption of water and the high demand for clean drinking water. Numerous approaches have been taken to reduce water consumption, but in the long run it seems only possible to recycle waste water into high quality water. It seems timely to discuss alternative water remediation technologies that are fit for industrial as well as less developed countries to ensure a high quality of drinking water throughout Europe. Main Features The present paper discusses a range of phytoremediation technologies to be applied in a modular approach to integrate and improve the performance of existing wastewater treatment, especially towards the emerging micro pollutants, i.e. organic chemicals and pharmaceuticals. This topic is of global relevance for the EU. Results Existing technologies for waste water treatment do not sufficiently address increasing pollution situation, especially with the growing use of organic pollutants in the private household and health sector. Although some crude chemical approaches exist, such as advanced oxidation steps, most waste water treatment plants will not be able to adopt them. The same is true for membrane technologies. Discussion Incredible progress has been made during recent years, thus providing us with membranes of longevity and stability and, at the same time, high filtration capacity. However, these systems are expensive and delicate in operation, so that the majority of communities will not be able to afford them. Combinations of different phytoremediation technologies seem to be most promising to solve this burning problem. Conclusions To quantify the occurrence and the distribution of micropollutants, to evaluate their effects, and to prevent them from passing through wastewater collection and treatment systems into rivers, lakes and ground water bodies represents an urgent task for applied environmental sciences in the coming years. Recommendations Public acceptance of green technologies is generally higher than that of industrial processes. The EU should stimulate research to upgrade existing waste water treatment by implementing phytoremediation modules and demonstrating their reliability to the public.  相似文献
