Moral foundations theory argues that moral reasoning is widely observed and fundamental to the legitimacy of relevant governance and policy interventions. A new analytical framework to examine and test how moral reasoning underpins and legitimizes governance and practice on adaptation to climate change risks is proposed. It develops a typology of eight categories of vulnerability-based and system-based moral reasoning that pertain to the dilemmas around adaptation and examines the prevalence of these moral categories in public discourse about specific adaptation issues. The framework is tested using data on climate change impact, adaptation, and societal responsibility, drawn from 14 focus groups comprising 148 participants across the UK. Participants consistently use moral reasoning to explain their views on climate adaptation; these include both vulnerability-based and system-based framings. These findings explain public responses to adaptation options and governance, and have implications for the direction of adaptation policy, including understanding which types of reasoning support politically legitimate interventions. 相似文献

Invasive species control or eradication is an important issue. On the islands of Hawaii, this problem is exceedingly evident
when it comes to Miconia
calvescens (Miconia). Adequate funding is needed to control or eradicate this invasive plant, but with the limited amount of funding available
for the fight against Miconia, it is important to make sure that the fund is being spent in a way that addresses the needs or preferences of the Hawaiian
residents. Using the conjoint choice experiment method, we designed a survey that would measure the Hawaiian residents’ willingness
to support Miconia control program attributes. The attributes focused on were cost, biodiversity loss, extent of spread and soil erosion. Latent
class approach was used to assess the surveyed population to see the different preferences by individual classes. The results
show three different classes or groups of individuals with varying preferences for a control program of which cost and erosion
were the top preferred attributes among the classes. These groups were defined by their socio-demographics of income, the
length of residency and exposure to farming/gardening activities. Even with a preference for lower cost, a group showed willingness
to pay more ($2.40) for a program that reduces erosion from high to low. Finally, the biodiversity attribute had very low
consideration from a majority of the respondents showing the need for educating the public regarding its importance in preserving

The aim of this paper is to assess how policy goals in relation to the promotion of green growth, energy security, pollution control and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reductions have been aligned in policies that have been implemented in selected countries during the last decades as a basis for discussing how a multi objective policy paradigm can contribute to future climate change mitigation. The paper includes country case studies from Brazil, Canada, China, the European Union (EU), India, Japan, Mexico, Nigeria, South Africa, South Korea and the United States covering renewable energy options, industry, transportation, the residential sector and cross-sectoral policies. These countries and regions together contribute more than two thirds of global GHG emissions. The paper finds that policies that are nationally driven and that have multiple objectives, including climate-change mitigation, have been widely applied for decades in both developing countries and industrialised countries. Many of these policies have a long history, and adjustments have taken place based on experience and cost effectiveness concerns. Various energy and climate-change policy goals have worked together in these countries, and in practice a mix of policies reflecting specific priorities and contexts have been pursued. In this way, climate-change mitigation has been aligned with other policy objectives and integrated into broader policy packages, though in many cases specific attention has not been given to the achievement of large GHG emission reductions. The level of specialization of the entomopathogenic nematode Steinernema scapterisci with its native Xenorhabdus symbiont was investigated by testing (1) the influence of non-native bacterial strains on nematode fitness within an insect-host
(Galleria mellonella) and (2) specificity of the association between the nematode infective juveniles and non-native bacteria. All non-native
Xenorhabdus spp. or Photorhabdus spp. strains tested were mutualistically associated with other entomopathogenic nematodes in nature. We showed that most
of the Xenorhabdus spp. strains tested led to an insignificant difference of the nematode's fitness compared to the one obtained with the native
bacterium. Conversely, Photorhabdus spp. strains almost entirely abolished nematode reproduction. The phylogenetic analysis of bacterial strains tested, showed
that there was a negative correlation between S. scapterisci's reproduction rate with a bacterial strain and the genetic distance of this bacterial strain from the native one. We also
showed that the native bacterium was the only one which was transmitted by S. scapterisci's infective juveniles. All these results, suggested a specialization between S. scapterisci and its native Xenorhabdus. As the same phenomenon was already demonstrated in the association between S. carpocapsae and X. nematophila, specialization between partners would not be an exception in entomopathogenic nematode-bacteria interactions. Nevertheless,

This paper is part of a two-year study to investigate the feasibility of initiating a Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project
in an indigenous community of Eastern Panamá, Ipetí-Emberá. We use participatory mapping and matrices as well as household
surveys to develop a land-use/land-cover baseline scenario and examine the role of local participation in assessing land-use
change. In Ipetí, land-use change has not occurred in a linear way over the last decades, and our data unveils socio-economic
factors as potential key drivers of change. The concordance that we observed between geographic information and individual
and collective perceptions of land-use change substantiates the possibility of using local knowledge in the establishment
of baseline data for CDM projects. Our calculations suggest that the total carbon (C) stocks in the Tierra Colectiva (TC) of Ipetí-Emberá in 2004 represents a 47% reduction from the estimated C stock at the onset of settlement in the early
1970’s. Results from the participatory assessments predict that, in 2024 and in absence of a CDM project, the C stocks will
decline from 301,859 t C in 2004 to 155,730 t C, which constitutes a reduction of 52%. The scenario with CDM estimates C stocks
of 305,853 t C for 2024, a value slightly superior to the 2004 value. In the TC there is ground to believe that cattle ranching
is likely to become an ever more important activity as the population is young and growing and cannot easily move elsewhere.
Forests tend to be cleared for cultivation while pastures are established on short fallows. Our baseline scenario underlines
the potential for a CDM project to make a significant difference in the future C stocks of this landscape. 相似文献
