A single column ion chromatographic method for the determination of sulfide, sulfite, sulfate and thiosulfate was developed. It uses an anion exchange column (Waters, IC-Pak A) and a borate-gluconate buffer at pH 8.5 that contains EDTA and ascorbic acid to prevent sulfite oxidation. This eluent has relatively low background values for both conductivity and ultraviolet absorption, which allows determination of the above sulfur anions with high sensitivity. The mean percent recovery of the investigated anions in synthetic mixtures were 98.6, 100.0, 99.6 and 100.2 % for sulfide, sulfite, thiosulfate and sulfate, respectively. The method was applied to study sulfide ion oxidation at the water-sediment interface using six aquifer samples collected within the continental United States. Results indicated that sulfide ion disappearance follows a pseudo first-order profile and that the rate of disappearance correlates with the total organic carbon and clay content of the sediment.  相似文献

Studies were conducted to evaluate the changes of phosphorus in marine water and sediments of seven stations in the coastal areas off Cochin. Samples were collected on a monthly basis from January 2001 to December 2001. Results revealed higher levels of P in marine water samples collected during October-December 2001. The marine water P ranged from 0 to 0.38 ppm throughout the year. Speciation of P in marine sediment revealed that the Al bound P was maximum compared to Fe, Ca and organic bound P. Loosely bound and aluminium bound P was maximum during October-December especially in 10 and 20 m depth stations off Narakkal. Fe bound P was found to be least in June and September and highest during January-April. Low levels of Ca bound P were detected in samples collected during January-March and inorganic P was maximum in June and September. Organic bound P was maximum in 10 m depth stations and also during June and September. Phosphate fractions varied with locations and exhibited seasonal fluctuations.  相似文献

This study reports the feasibility of applying directly suspended liquid-phase microextraction (DSLPME)-gas chromatography detection for the pre-concentration and determination of low levels of eight polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in aqueous samples. The technique requires minimal sample preparation, analysis time and solvent consumption and represents significant advantages over conventional analytical methods. The experimental parameters such as salt content, sample temperature, stirring rate, extraction time, micro-drop volume and breakthrough volume were investigated and found to have significant influences on DSLPME. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the enrichment factor ranged from 578 to 729, and the recovery was above 93 %. Calibration curves possessed good linearity (R 2?>?0.99) over a wide concentration range of 0.1–10.0 μg L?1 with limits of detection ranging from 0.01 to 0.07 μg L?1. The relative standard deviations for 1.0 μg L?1 of PCBs in water by using internal standard were in the range 2–14 % (n?=?3). The proposed simple, accurate and sensitive analytical method was applied successfully to the determination of trace amounts of PCBs in water samples.  相似文献

Oropharyngeal cancer is a significant public health issue in the world. The incidence of oropharyngeal cancer has been increased among people who have habit of chewing smokeless tobacco (SLT) in Pakistan. The aim of present study was to evaluate the concentration of nickel (Ni) in biological samples (whole blood, serum) of oral (n?=?95) and pharyngeal (n?=?84) male cancer patients. For comparison purposes, the biological samples of healthy age-matched referents (n?=?150), who consumed and did not consumed SLT products, were also analyzed for Ni levels. As the Ni level is very low in biological samples, a preconcentration procedure has been developed, prior to analysis of analyte by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). The Ni in acid-digested biological samples was complexed with ammonium pyrrolidinedithio carbamate (APDC), and a resulted complex was extracted in a surfactant Triton X-114. Acidic ethanol was added to the surfactant-rich phase prior to its analysis by FAAS. The chemical variables, such as pH, amounts of reagents (APDC, Triton X-114), temperature, incubation time, and sample volume were optimized. The resulted data indicated that concentration of Ni was higher in blood and serum samples of cancer patients as compared to that of referents who have or have not consumed different SLT products (p?=?0.012–0.001). Water and sediment samples were collected from eight different locations along the River Nile and its branches. Residues of hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH's), hexachlorobenzene (HCB), DDT's, cyclodienes and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB's) were analyzed by GLC. Data on Grand Total (GT) concentration values pointed out that Rosetta Branch was more polluted with all components than Demietta Branch. Kafr El-Ziate was the most polluted location showing 1355.8 ng/L for water and 7396.9 ng/g for sediments, while Delta Barrage was the least polluted site. The concentrations of gamma-HCH were higher than the other isomers (alpha- and beta-HCH) in all studied sites. The results showed that HCB was the smallest pollutant at all locations on comparison with other chlorinated hydrocarbons. El-Mansoura, Rosetta and Kafr El-Ziate sites contained the highest concentrations of DDT's in both water and sediment samples. P,P'-DDE was dominate in all locations of water samples, but P,P'-DDT was in sediment samples. Also, the results showed the prominent presence of cyclodienes when compared with the other OC's compounds in sediment samples, especially Aldrin. Kafr El-Ziate was the most polluted location by PCB's, particularly the Ar1242. However, there were increasing levels of chlorinated hydrocarbons in the sediment samples parallel to percentage extractable organic matter (% EOM). The currant clearwing Synanthedon tipuliformis (Clerck) (Sesiidae) is a worldwide pest of black currants, Ribes nigrum. This moth has been observed to feed on nectar of inflorescences of Canada thistles, Cirsium arvense (L.) Scop. This work was undertaken to identify floral compound(s) produced by Canada thistles inflorescences that mediate the response of the currant clearwing. Floral volatiles were collected during the day and analysed by coupled gas chromatography/electroantennographic detection (GC/EAD) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Three compounds consistently elicited EAD response from moth antennae and were identified by GC/MS as phenylacetaldehyde, methyl salicylate and dimethyl salicylate. When the compounds were tested individually or in various combinations in field trapping experiments, a 3-component blend attracted the largest number of female and male currant clearwings. Subsequent field trapping experiments were conducted to determine the optimal attraction dose for the ternary blend using three loadings of 1, 10 and 100 mg loaded into a polyethylene sachet. The highest catches were in traps baited with the 100 mg loading. In all trials, males and mated females were caught in significant numbers, while very low numbers of virgin females were found in the traps. In recent years the efficacy of mating disruption against currant clearwing has been reported as declining. The new kairomone blend identified in this study can be used with the sex pheromone to provide an effective control option for this important pest.  相似文献
