Reducing costs and increasing benefits for rural communities coexisting with large carnivores is necessary for conservation of jaguar (Panthera onca) and puma (Puma concolor). To design acceptable incentives, stakeholders must be involved in the process. We conducted an innovative, structured, group communication process based on a Delphi technique as a template for identifying potential incentives. Community workshops with 133 members of 7 communities and surveys with 25 multidisciplinary experts from government, nongovernmental organizations, and academia provided iterative data to design a plan of incentives through 4 rounds of discussion. The final product integrated 862 ideas into 6 types of incentives: organization of communities, mechanisms for improved dialogue, citizen technical assistance, green labeling for community products, payment for the ecosystem service of biodiversity, and an assessment of financial alternatives. We used quantitative and qualitative techniques to indicate support for decisions about the design of incentives, which reduced researcher subjectivity. The diverse incentives developed and the cooperation from multiple stakeholders resulted in an incentive plan that integrated issues of governance, equity, and social norms. 相似文献

In the coming years India faces greatchallenges in energy and environment. This paper discusses theintegrated modeling system used fordeveloping and analyzing the long-termtrajectories and presents results for thescenarios developed. In the context ofongoing market reforms two scenarios –accelerated and decelerated reforms – aredeveloped depicting fast and slow progressin energy sector reforms compared toexpectations in the baseline scenario.Accelerated market reforms would spurimprovements in technological efficiencies.Reforms would lower investment risks inIndia, thereby stimulating increased levelsof foreign direct investment. On the otherhand in decelerated reform scenarioeconomic growth is lower than that in thebase case, there is low access to capital,and technological improvements lag behindthose in the base case. In another scenariowe assume specific policy interventions forpenetration of renewable technologies overthe baseline scenario, for promotion andaccelerated deployment of renewable energytechnologies over and above the baselineassumptions. The performance of Vicia faba L. in soil amended by different concentrations of fly ash has been studied. The parameters considered are seed germination, growth behaviour and nodulation frequency of the plant. Results revealed that while fly-ash amendment to the soil improved the growth performance at initial stages with application of lower concentrations, it was inhibitory at higher exposure concentrations. Although there was no difference in survival rates, but the seedling growth was reduced in comparison to control plants. Fly ash delayed the nodulation as lesser number of nodules was recorded at higher amendments. Results suggested feasibility of growing V. faba in fly ash contaminated area. 相似文献

An attempt has been made to establish an approach and a methodology to quantify electronic waste (e-waste) in India. The study
was limited to personal computers (PCs) and televisions (TVs) within the state boundaries of Delhi and in selected areas in
the National Capital Region (NCR). Material flow analysis was used to establish an e-waste trade value chain, where cathode
ray tubes (CRTs) were tracked in the e-waste dismantling stream of the CRT regunning process. The market supply method was
used to estimate the theoretical amount of e-waste for each item. Sensitivity analysis was carried out for PCs, using 5 years
and 7 years as the average life, and for TVs, using 10 years and 12 years as the average life. Externalities such as e-waste
entering the study area from outside were factored into the final e-waste analysis. Sensitivity analysis on the average life
also factored in elements of active usage, reuse, and storage of electronic items and consumer behavior into assumptions about
the obsolescence rate in market supply method. A primary survey indicated an output of 1800–2100 CRTs per day from all regunning
units in the study area. This range validated the theoretical output for an average life of 7 years for a PC and 12 years
for a TV. Using this approach, e-waste was estimated to reach 2 million units from the domestic market by 2010. 相似文献

Recognizing the importance of sacred groves in biodiversity conservation and management, and the recent threats to them, the
present study was conducted in Shivbari sacred grove of Himachal Pradesh. The study aimed at documenting the floral wealth
of Shivbari and promoting plantation of indigenous species in participation with local people. For this, systematic field
surveys in different seasons were conducted in Shivbari from April 2005 to November 2009, and liaison was maintained with
the local community and temple management authority for gaining insight into the history and problems of Shivbari and initiating
plantation activities. A total of 69 flowering plant species were identified inside the grove, which include 14 trees, 9 shrubs,
3 lianas and 43 herbs. This represents almost 2% of the total flowering plant species occurring in the state of Himachal Pradesh.
Mallotus philippensis followed by Putranjiva roxburghii was the most dominant tree species. Adhatoda
zeylanica was the most common shrub species, while Achyranthes aspera was the most common herb species. The grove harbours 23 plants species that are in high demand in the market, and at the
same time also influences the microclimate of the area. The temperature inside the grove was significantly lower than the
temperature outside the grove. The recent changes in socio-economic status of the local people and a shift towards market-oriented
economy have threatened the survival of Shivbari. However, the deeply held beliefs of the pilgrims, local people and priest
offer a ray of hope. During the course of the study, 3,000 plants were planted inside the grove out of which 60% have survived. 相似文献

Bacterial strains with poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) degradation potential were isolated from waste yard soil samples of selected industrial sites in Uttarakhand, India, and two microbial consortia were developed, i.e. Consortium I comprises Pseudomonas sp. strain Rb10, Pseudomonas sp. strain Rb11 and Bacillus sp. strain Rb18, and Consortium II is composed of Lysinibacillus sp. strain Rb1, Pseudomonas sp. strain Rb13 and Pseudomonas sp. strain Rb19. The current study involved enrichment selection via liquid and semi-solid media, followed by isolation and screening of bacterial strains using PHB pellets and films. Furthermore, the identification and characterisation was done by triphasic approach. The utilisation of PHB by the characterised strains was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Moreover, the minimum inhibitory concentration of solubilised PHB was found to be 2.5?mg/mL, which was detected through ‘clear zone assay’. Further, the selection and biocompatibility testing of potential isolates were performed for the formation of bacterial consortia. Thus, the present work would provide direct and standardised protocol for screening and selection of potential microbiomes for biodegradation of polymers by overcoming the negative effect of organic solvents. The present study was undertaken to evaluate biochemical markers of chronic carbofuran exposure to rats in terms of lipid peroxide and intrasynaptosomal calcium levels and to correlate them with the histopathological changes in brain regions. A significant increase in lipid peroxidation (LPO) in terms of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) was observed in the cerebral cortex (65%) and brain stem (33%) after carbofuran exposure. This was accompanied by a significant increase (87%) in the intracellular free-Ca2+ [Ca2+]i levels. N-acetylcysteine (NAC) administration, on the other hand, reversed the carbofuran-induced increase in LPO and [Ca2+]i. Histopathological studies of carbofuran-exposed brain revealed high frequency of pyknotic neurons in the cerebral cortex and microhaemorrhages in the brain stem. NAC supplementation to carbofuran-treated animals resulted in normalisation of the brain architecture as seen by a reduction in the number of pyknotic nuclei in the cerebral cortex. These findings indicate that increased LPO and elevated [Ca2+]i levels are involved in the development of carbofuran neurotoxicity and are eventually responsible for the pathological alterations. The study also demonstrates potential neuroprotective effect of NAC treatment in carbofuran neurotoxicity. 相似文献
