In both predictive theoretical and empirical models for aquatic plant communities in running waters, the development and competition are many times explained in terms of nutrients. Minerals necessary for growth are generally not assumed to be limiting, although they influence the important pH-value. At the same time it is known that factors such as oxygen-concentration, solar energy, salinity, dimension of the system and soil characteristics (including river sediments) influence the development of the community, and should be considered in modelling. Effects of water quantity and water quality on macrophytes are reviewed. These conditions are caused by processes in the landscape, characterised by a set of nested variables which explain the distribution of macrophyte species and communities. Relevant variables are described and grouped on three scales: regional, local and site conditions. Case studies with direct and indirect gradient analysis are presented. Statistical tests (stepwise regression with forward selection) reveal that each species distribution is explained by a characteristic set of relevant variables, ranging from soil type and dimension of the system, to nutrient and salinity concentration.  相似文献

Division of labour during colony emigration is widespread in ants. An important problem is how tasks are allocated during colony movement from one nest site to another. The generally favoured view is that emigrations are organised by a minority group of individuals, which either work unusually hard at tasks (elites) or have the exclusive task of carrying out the emigration (moving specialists). Five consecutive emigrations of a Leptothorax unifasciatus (Latr.) colony showed that the number of transporters, i.e. the individuals that took an active part in the emigration by transporting brood and ants, was smaller than it would have been if allocation of this task was random during each emigration. However, single emigrations of another three colonies, for which the spatial distribution and behaviour of the workers had been observed for a week prior to the emigration, demonstrated that the transporters did not form a homogeneous group. They differed in their spatial positions and tasks before the emigration. There was also no evidence that transporters worked harder or less hard than their nestmates before the emigration. Therefore, the individuals which carry out emigrations in L. unifasciatus colonies appear to be neither moving specialists nor elites. We propose that task allocation during emigrations of L. unifasciatus colonies is based on a feedback mechanism that involves learning.  相似文献

The redox cycling of heavy metals as well as their interactions with organic pollutants is a major contributor to the oxidative stress resulting from aquatic pollution. Therefore, in order to evaluate beta-naphthoflavone (BNF), Cu and BNF/Cu-induced oxidative stress with single and subsequent exposures, research was carried out in European eel (Anguilla anguilla L.). Eel gill and kidney oxidative stress biomarker responses such as lipid peroxidation (LPO), glutathione peroxidase (GPX), catalase (CAT), glutathione S-transferase (GST) and total reduced glutathione (GSH) to a single 24 h exposure to two copper concentrations (Cu-1 microM, 2.5 microM) and BNF (2.7 microM) with or without 24 h BNF (2.7 microM) pre-exposure were investigated. Cu exposure alone showed a significant gill GST increase at the lowest concentration and GSH content decrease for the highest concentration. Double BNF exposure in gill demonstrated a significant increase in LPO, CAT, GPX and GST, as well as a decrease in GSH content. However, in sequential BNF/Cu exposures, only the highest Cu concentration exhibited a significant increase in LPO and GSH as well as a decrease in GPX (vs. BNF + CW). In kidney, Cu exposure alone showed a significant CAT and GSH contents decrease for both concentrations, and at highest concentration in GPX; as well as GST increase at the lowest concentration. Double BNF exposure showed a significant increase in LPO and GST. Nevertheless, in sequential BNF/Cu exposures, both concentrations exhibited a significant increase in LPO and decrease in GSH contents. Moreover, LPO was also increased significantly in comparison to BNF+CW and the equivalent Cu exposures without BNF pre-exposure. Concerning GPX, a significant increase was observed at highest Cu concentration. In GST, a significant decrease at the lowest Cu concentration and increase at the highest Cu concentration was observed. Summarizing, a simple copper or BNF exposures have no ability to induce LPO in both gill and kidney. However, double BNF exposure induced LPO in both organs and sequential BNF/Cu exposures potentiated the risk of peroxidative damage occurrence in both organs. BNF/Cu interference on antioxidant responses differs between the studied organs. In gill, antagonistic effects were denoted with probable reflex in terms of peroxidative damage increase. In kidney, BNF pre-exposure prevented CAT and GPX inhibition by copper; though, no advantage of this effect was perceptible as defence against LPO generation. Considering BNF as a surrogate for a PAH and the detected interactions with copper, as well as the likelihood that these effects would be observed in polluted ecosystems, current results demonstrate their relevance to actual ecological exposures contributing to a better knowledge on oxidative stress mechanisms in fish.  相似文献

This paper describes the environmental characteristics and situation of aquatic habitats and communities in southern continental and maritime areas of southeastern South America (Patagonian Shelf GIWA Subregion), resulting from an overall assessment carried out within the framework of a GIWA project, mostly on the basis of publicly available data. The main focus of the analysis was on the current situation of transboundary water resources and anthropogenic impacts. In the inland waters, habitat and community modifications result, principally, from dams and reservoirs built in the main watercourses for hydroelectric power generation and other uses. The transformation of lotic environments into lentic ones have affected habitats and altered biotic communities. In the La Plata River basin, invasive exotic species have displaced native ones. Habitats in the ocean have been degraded, as their biodiversity becomes affected by overfishing and pollution. This article includes a discussion on the causal chain and the policy options elaborated for the Coastal Ecosystem of Buenos Aires province and the Argentinean-Uruguayan Common Fishing Zone, where fishing resources are shared by both countries.  相似文献

The possibility of using zeolites containing the 2,4,6-triphenylpyrylium cation as photocatalysts for the degradation of pollutants has been tested on aqueous xylidine (2,4-dimethylaniline) solutions as models for contaminated wastewaters. The influence of the photocatalyst and substrate concentrations on xylidine oxidation has been investigated in homogeneous solution, by performing a series of experiments chosen according to the experimental design methodology (Doehlert uniform array). The empirical models and the corresponding response surfaces obtained from data analysis have been used for simulating and predicting degradation efficiency. The results have shown that conversion increases with increasing amounts of photocatalyst and decreasing concentration of the model pollutant. The fluorescence of 2,4,6-triphenylpyrylium was quenched by xylidine with a rate constant k(q) of 3.1x10(9)M(-1)s(-1). This result suggests a direct electron transfer between the excited pyrylium salt and xylidine. Because of the limited stability of the photocatalyst in homogeneous media, a pyrylium containing Y-zeolite has been tested for the photocatalytic oxidation of xylidine under heterogeneous conditions. The results suggest that the supported catalyst has a much improved stability and that xylidine oxidation rates remain nearly constant during the whole reaction time. An additional advantage of the pyrylium containing zeolite photocatalyst is that it can be recycled and used for further experiments.  相似文献

A network consisting of 17 sampling stations strategically distributed in the geographical area of Galicia (NW Spain) was set up in January 1999 in order to monitorice the ionic rainwater quality in this Spanish region which has an area approximately 29.575 km(2) and a population of 2.8 million. This paper presents the preliminary results of the exploratory study on the ionic rainfall composition in this area during the first year. In each rainwater sample collected chloride, sulphate, nitrite, nitrate, phosphate, sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium and ammonium were measured, as were pH, conductivity and precipitation-volume. An univariate study according to the location of each sampling site was performed. Multivariate chemometric techniques, such as principal component analysis and cluster analysis, were applied to the complete data set (consisting of 630 observations) in order to elucidate the factors affecting the ionic composition of rainwater.  相似文献

The transport of contaminants in fractured media is a complex phenomenon with a great environmental impact. It has been described with several models, most of them based on complex partial differential equations, that are difficult to apply when equilibrium and nonequilibrium dynamics are considered in complex boundaries. With the aim of overcoming this limitation, a combination of two lattice Bathnagar, Gross and Krook (BGK) models, derived from the lattice Boltzmann model, is proposed in this paper. The fractured medium is assumed to be a single fissure in a porous rock matrix. The proposed approach permits us to deal with two processes with different length scales: advection-dispersion in the fissure and diffusion within the rock matrix. In addition to the mentioned phenomena, sorption reactions are also considered. The combined model has been tested using the experimental breakthrough curves obtained by Garnier et al. (Garnier, J.M., Crampon, N., Préaux, C., Porel, G., Vreulx, M., 1985. Tra?age par 13C, 2H, I- et uranine dans la nappe de la craie sénonienne en écoulement radial convergent (Béthune, France). J. Hidrol. 78, 379-392.) giving acceptable results. Increased urbanisation is leading to a rise in light pollution. Light pollution can disrupt the behaviour and physiology of animals resulting in increased mortality. However, animals may also benefit from artificial light sources, as these may aggregate prey or signal suitable environments. For example, spiders are commonly seen congregating around artificial light sources. Changes in selective pressures engendered by urban environments are driving changes in urban organisms, driving better adaptation to these environments. Here, we ask whether urban populations of the synanthropic spider Steatoda triangulosa show different responses to light compared to rural populations. Egg-sacs from urban and rural populations were collected and incubated in a common garden setting, and the emerging spiderlings tested for light preference. While rural spiderlings avoided light (37% built webs in the light), urban spiderlings were indifferent to it (49% built webs in the light). Reduced light avoidance may benefit spiders through increased prey capture, increased movement into suitable habitats, or due to a release from selection pressure from visually hunting predators which do not enter buildings.  相似文献
