In this study we perform an ecological analysis of the resources use in the diet of the ribeirinho populations of the Barcelos municipality, Rio Negro, Amazonas, Brazil. Data on food composition, seasonality, and origin took place during three field trips between 1999 and 2000. Data were gathered based on structured interviews and observations from a total of 320 meals of 114 randomly selected families and 164 fishing trips. The staple food of the studied populations is based on fish and manioc, although the food niche amplitude can vary according to the factors such as the access to imported food items, resources seasonality, and socio-economic conditions. The migration to urban centers along with the changes in subsistence activities (reduction of small-scale agriculture and specialization in commercial fishing) may result in changes in the food habits of ribeirinho populations from Rio Negro.

Extensive measurements on particle number concentration and size distribution (13–800 nm), together with detailed chemical composition of PM2.5 have constituted the main inputs of the database used for a source apportionment analysis. Data were collected at an urban background site in Barcelona, Western Mediterranean.The source identification analysis helped us to distinguish five emission sources (vehicle exhausts, mineral dust, sea spray, industrial source and fuel-oil combustion) and two atmospheric processes (photochemical induced nucleation and regional/urban background particles derived from coagulation and condensation processes). After that, a multilinear regression analysis was applied in order to quantify the contribution of each factor.This study reveals that vehicle exhausts contribute dominantly to the number concentration in all the particle sizes (52–86%), but especially in the range 30–200 nm. This work also points out the importance of the regional and/or urban formed aerosols (secondary inorganic particles) on the total number concentration (around 25% of the total number), with a higher impact on the accumulation mode. The photo-chemically induced nucleation of aerosols only represents a small proportion of the total number as an annual mean (3%), but is very relevant when considering only the nucleation mode (13–20 nm) fraction (23%). The other sources recognized registered sporadic contributions to the total number, coinciding with specific meteorological scenarios.This study discloses the main sources and features affecting and controlling the fine and ultra-fine aerosols in a typical city in the Western Mediterranean coast. Whereas the road traffic appears to be the most important source of sub-micrometric aerosols, other sources may not be negligible under specific meteorological conditions.  相似文献

We report on ambient atmospheric aerosols present at sea during the Atlantic–Mediterranean voyage of Oceanic II (The Scholar Ship) in spring 2008. A record was obtained of hourly PM10, PM2.5, and PM1 particle size fraction concentrations and 24-h filter samples for chemical analysis which allowed for comparison between levels of crustal particles, sea spray, total carbon, and secondary inorganic aerosols. On-board monitoring was continuous from the equatorial Atlantic to the Straits of Gibraltar, across the Mediterranean to Istanbul, and back via Lisbon to the English Channel. Initially clean air in the open Atlantic registered PM10 levels <10 μg m?3 but became progressively polluted by increasingly coarse PM as the ship approached land. Away from major port cities, the main sources of atmospheric contamination identified were dust intrusions from North Africa (NAF), smoke plumes from biomass burning in sub-Saharan Africa and Russia, industrial sulphate clouds and other regional pollution sources transported from Europe, sea spray during rough seas, and plumes emanating from islands. Under dry NAF intrusions PM10 daily mean levels averaged 40–60 μg m?3 (30–40 μg m?3 PM2.5; c. 20 μg m?3 PM1), peaking briefly to >120 μg m?3 (hourly mean) when the ship passed through curtains of higher dust concentrations amassed at the frontal edge of the dust cloud. PM1/PM10 ratios ranged from very low during desert dust intrusions (0.3–0.4) to very high during anthropogenic pollution plume events (0.8–1).  相似文献

Quinclorac (QNC) is an effective but rather persistent herbicide commonly used in rice production. This herbicide presents a mean persistence in the environment so its residues are considered of environmental relevance. However, few studies have been conducted to investigate its environmental behavior and degradation. In the present work, direct photolysis and TiO2 photocatalysis of the target compound in ultrapure and paddy field water were investigated. After 10 h photolysis in ultrapure water, the concentration of QNC declined 26% and 54% at 250 and 700 W m−2, respectively. However, the amount of quinclorac in paddy field water remained almost constant under the same irradiation conditions. QNC dissipated completely after 40 min of TiO2 photocatalysis in ultrapure water, whereas 130 min were necessary to degrade 98% of the initial concentration in paddy field water.Possible QNC photolytic and photocatalytic degradation pathways are proposed after structure elucidation of the main transformation products, through liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry and exact mass measurements. Pyridine ring hydroxylation at C-9 followed by ring opening and/or oxidative dechlorination were the key steps of QNC degradation.  相似文献

Toxicity of silver nanoparticles to rainbow trout: A toxicogenomic approach   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Silver (Ag) nanoparticles are used as antimicrobial adjuvant in various products such as clothes and medical devices where the release of nano-Ag could contaminate the environment and harm wildlife. The purpose of this study was to examine the sublethal effects of nano-Ag and dissolved Ag on Oncorhynchus mykiss rainbow trout. Hepatic Ag contents and changes in gene expression were monitored to provide insights on bioavailability and mode of action of both forms of silver. Fish were exposed to increasing concentrations (0.06, 0.6 and 6 μg L−1) of nano-Ag (20 nm) and silver nitrate (AgNO3) for 96 h at 15 °C. A gene expression analysis was performed in the liver using a DNA microarray of 207 stress-related genes followed by a quantitative polymerase chain reaction on a selection of genes for validation. The biochemical markers consisted of the determination of labile zinc, metallothioneins, DNA strand breaks, lipid peroxidation (LPO) and vitellogenin-like proteins. The analysis of total Ag in the aquarium water revealed that nano-Ag was mostly aggregated, with 1% of the total Ag being dissolved. Nevertheless, hepatic Ag content was significantly increased in exposed fish. Indeed, dissolved Ag was significantly more bioavailable than nano-Ag only at the highest concentration with 38 ± 10 and 11 ± 3 ng Ag mg−1 proteins for dissolved and nano-Ag respectively. Exposure to both forms of Ag led to significant changes in gene expression for 13% of tested gene targets. About 12% of genes responded specifically to nano-Ag, while 10% of total gene targets responded specifically to dissolved Ag. The levels of vitellogenin-like proteins and DNA strand breaks were significantly reduced by both forms of Ag, but DNA break levels were lower with nano-Ag and could not be explained by the presence of ionic Ag. Labile zinc and the oxidized fraction of metallothioneins were increased by both forms of Ag, but LPO was significantly induced by nano-Ag only. A discriminant function analysis revealed that the responses obtained by biochemical markers and a selection of ten target genes were able to discriminate completely (100%) the effects of both forms of Ag. Exposure to nano-Ag involved genes in inflammation and dissolved Ag involved oxidative stress and protein stability. Hence, the toxicity of Ag will differ depending on the presence of Ag nanoparticles and aggregates.  相似文献

Abstract

This paper reports on the residues of methyl parathion (O,O‐dimethyl O‐4‐nitrophenyl phosphorothioate), trifluralin (α, α, α‐trifluoro‐2, 6‐dinitro‐N, N‐dipropyl‐p‐toluidine), endosulfan [(1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 7‐hexachloro‐8, 9, 10‐trinorborn‐5‐en‐2, 3‐ylenebismethylene) sulfite] and dimethoate (O, O‐dimethyl S‐methylcarbamoylmethyl phosphorodithioate) in a cotton crop soil. Soil samples (0–15 cm) were collected at different periods from the cotton crop farm and subjected to Soxhlet extraction. The extracted material was analysed after clean‐up by a HP5890 II gas Chromatograph equipped with a 63Ni electron‐capture detector (ECD‐63Ni) and fitted with a 25m x 0,2mm i.d. fused silica capillary column [Ultra‐2 (5% phenylmethyl polysiloxane)]. The recoveries of the pesticide residues from the spiked control soil were determined after Soxhlet extraction and C18 cartridges clean‐up by using radiotracer techniques with the corresponding 14C‐pesticides. The results show that in the cotton crop soil the pesticide residues under study were present in the range of 0.1 to 0.4 mg ? kg‐1. Endosulfan was found to be rapidly degraded in the soil and formed a sulfate metabolite.  相似文献

Petroleum hydrocarbons are considered one of the main organic chemicals found in water bodies. In the present study, the median lethal concentration (LC50) was estimated for mullet Mugil liza after acute exposure to petroleum water-soluble fraction (PWSF). Furthermore, histopathological studies and micronuclei frequency were also performed in order to observe deleterious effects of medium-term exposition to PWSF. Mullets (25?±?2.3 g) were exposed to chronic concentrations (1.7, 3.5 and 7 % of PWSF), plus the control group, for 14 and 7 days of clearance time. Throughout the experimental period (1, 4, 14 and 21 days), blood samples were collected for analysis of micronucleus (MN) and liver and gills for histopathological study. For these procedures, seven fish were sampled per concentration tested. The LC50-96 h was estimated at 37.5 % of the PWSF. The time required for MN induction was 96 h of exposure. The time of clearance was sufficient to achieve a MN frequency similar to that of the control group. Histopathological studies showed severe changes in the gill and liver tissues. The most relevant histopathology in the gills was telangiectasia. Hepatic histopathology such as cholestasis, dilated sinusoids and inflammatory infiltrates were commonly described. The MN test and histological study effectively detected damages caused by medium-term exposition to the PWSF, and despite the toxicity, a few days without exposure can minimize PWSF genotoxicity in juveniles of M. liza.  相似文献

The presence of metals in the Antarctic environment is principally a natural phenomenon caused by geochemical characteristics of the region, although some anthropogenic activities can increase these natural levels. Antarctic penguins present several of the characteristics of useful sentinels of pollution in Antarctica such as they are long-lived species situated at the top of food web. The concentrations of Al, Cr, Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Cd, and Pb were determined by inductively coupled plasma–mass spectrometry in samples of liver, kidney, muscle, bone, feather, and stomach contents of gentoo, chinstrap, and Adélie penguin (12 adults, five juveniles) from carcasses of naturally dead individuals collected opportunistically in the Antarctic Peninsula area. The obtained results showed that accumulation and magnification of several elements can be occurring, so that Cd and Se reached levels potentially toxic in some specimens. The presence of human activities seems to be increasing the presence of toxic metals such as Mn, Cr, Ni, or Pb in penguins.  相似文献

Standard species used in ecological risk assessment are chosen based on their sensitivity to various toxicants and the ease of rearing them for laboratory experiments. However, this mostly overlooks the fact that species in the field that may employ variable life-history strategies, which may have consequences concerning the vulnerability of such species to exposure with contaminants. We aimed to highlight the importance of copepods in ecology and to underline the need to include freshwater copepods in ecotoxicology. We carried out a literature search on copepods and Daphnia in ecology and ecotoxicology to compare the recognition given to these two taxa in these respective fields. We also conducted a detailed analysis of the literature on copepods and their current role in ecotoxicology to characterize the scale and depth of the studies and the ecotoxicological information therein. The literature on the ecology of copepods outweighed that in ecotoxicology when compared with daphnids. Copepods, like other zooplankton, were found to be sensitive to toxicants and important organisms in aquatic ecosystems. The few studies that were conducted on the ecotoxicology of copepods mainly focused on marine copepods. However, very little is known about the ecotoxicology of freshwater copepods. To enable a more realistic risk higher tier environmental risk assessment, we recommend considering freshwater copepods as part of the hazard assessment process. This could include the establishment of laboratory experiments to analyse the effects of toxicants on copepods and the development of individual-based models to extrapolate effects across species and scenarios.  相似文献
