Two ill-explored hypotheses might explain host castration by parasitic pea crabs. The ‘energy drain’ hypothesis states that castration is caused by host-derived nutrient consumption of parasites that ultimately diminishes host-energy intake. The ‘steric interference’ hypothesis states that castration occurs when parasites physically inhibit host reproduction. This study evaluated whether Calyptraeotheres garthi, a pea crab from the southwestern Atlantic, is a parasitic castrator and explored whether the two hypotheses above explain castration in the limpet Crepidula cachimilla. None of three studied limpet species brooded embryos during the reproductive season when infested by mature female pea crabs. Also, limpets of C. cachimilla infested by C. garthi did not reproduce during a 90-day experimental period while crab-free limpets did spawn embryos during this period. Limpets resumed reproduction soon after pea crabs were experimentally removed from their brooding chamber. Thus, C. garthi does castrate limpets, and castration is reversible. Pea crabs ‘steal’ food from limpets, and infested limpets did not modify their feeding behavior to counteract nutrient loss. Thus, infested limpets are expected to ingest less food which provides partial support for the ‘energy drain’ hypothesis. However, the limpet’s body condition increased or was not affected by pea crabs during the breeding season which argues against the same hypothesis. Furthermore, that limpets promptly recovered reproductive activity once pea crabs were experimentally removed, that castration was not induced by the smallest pea crabs in the population (that fill only partially the brooding chamber), and that parasitized limpets did exhibit fully mature ovaries, support the ‘steric interference’ hypothesis explaining parasitic castration. 相似文献

Populations near the geographic distribution limits of the species are considered to live under suboptimal conditions, and hence, slight environmental changes can be critical for their survival. The potential sensitivity to disturbances of the long-living macroalga Ascophyllum nodosum was analyzed by the determination of growth, recruitment, mortality, and production of biomass of a population near its southern distribution limit. Recruitment, survival and growth rates of <2 years old individuals were determined in a new population growing in experimentally denudated squares. Demographic data for >2 years old individuals were obtained from individuals in the original population after estimating their age from the number of gas bladders in the thallus. Growth and survival were described as continuous nonlinear functions of age applied to the population and were further used to make demography-based production estimates. Recruitment of A. nodosum in denudated substrates seemed to require a previous cover of other macroalgae (as Fucus vesiculosus) as the only cohort detected during the 26-month period of the study was observed after F. vesiculosus individuals started to increase. The low production estimates (2,033 g m?2 for a 10 year period) and poor recruitment may indicate a slow recuperation of this population to denudation. However, the large variability observed in the estimated growth curves of different populations along this southern distribution area suggests a large influence of local conditions that may help to overcome environmental changes at regional scales. 相似文献

Hole-nesting habits of redstarts Phoenicurus phoenicurus make laying difficult for parasitic cuckoo Cuculus canorus females and eviction of host eggs difficult for the cuckoo hatchling, causing fitness costs of cuckoo parasitism to be lower than those reported for open nesting hosts. Redstarts have recognition problems when confronted with real cuckoo eggs showing a perfect mimicry with their own eggs since they never eject when parasitized with perfect mimetic cuckoo eggs but instead desert the nest. Here we use a cost-benefit model to assess the effects of parasitism costs and the probability of being parasitized to estimate the reproductive success of redstarts when accepting or rejecting in the presence or absence of parasitism. Baseline data for model calculations come from this and a previous study on a cuckoo parasitized redstart population in Finland. When desertion implies a loss of 50%, we found that below a threshold value of 20% parasitism redstarts should accept cuckoo eggs since the costs of rejection exceed the benefits, whereas above this threshold they should reject. Interestingly, as the cost of desertion increases the threshold value, it should pay the redstart to reject increasingly at an exponential rate. Our field observations on natural parasitism and experiments with artificial cuckoo eggs confirmed the predictions from the model when hatching failures of the cuckoo were taken into account. Therefore, the low cost imposed by cuckoo parasitism in the system, and the presumably high cost of desertion as a response to parasitism favours acceptance over rejection for a wide range of parasitism pressures. This finding could explain the low rejection rate of real cuckoo eggs found in the redstart despite the presumably long history of a coevolutionary relationship with the cuckoo in Finland. 相似文献

In October 1992, the Oceanographic Centre of Málaga of the Spanish Oceanographical Institute (IEO) started a monitoring project,Ecomálaga, which collects physical, chemical, biological and sedimentological data from the Alborán Sea shelf. The project is coordinated
with similar projects in the Atlantic and Mediterranean Centres of IEO. The ultimate objective is to, understand the long-term
changes of the essential marine-environmental parameters.
So far, nine quarterly surveys have been carried out—from October 1992 to December 1994. The following variables were registered:abiotic: location weather, water temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll a, nitrate, nitrite, phosphate, silicate,biotic: zooplankton biomass and species composition, and ichthyoplankton. The granulometric composition and organic matter content
of sediments are also included.
Data are stored in a computerized data base named Ecomálaga Data Base, with contributions from geology, physics, plankton
biology and marine chemistry. The data base not only contains separate files for each research topic, but also allows for
interchange between these files, resulting in a synoptic data output. It offers the users an output in the form of synthetic
records of each station sampled.
The analysis of the data indicates seasonal influences and ainshore-offshore gradient, as well as an Atlantic influence on
the stations located in the transect closest to the Strait of Gibraltar. 相似文献

Nanomaterials may help to solve issues such as water availability, clean energy generation, control of drug-resistant microorganisms and food safety. Here we review innovative approaches to solve these issues using nanotechnology. The major topics discussed are wastewater treatment using carbon-based, metal-based and polymeric nanoadsorbents for removing organic and metal contaminants; nanophotocatalysis for microbial control; desalination of seawater using nanomembranes; energy conversion and storage using solar cells and hydrogen-sorbents nanostructures; antimicrobial properties of nanomaterials; smart delivery systems; biocompatible nanomaterials such as nanolignocellulosis and starches-based materials, and methods to decrease the toxicity of nanomaterials. Significantly, here it is reviewed two ways to palliate nanomaterials toxicity: (a) controlling physicochemical factors affecting this toxicity in order to dispose of more safe nanomaterials, and (b) harnessing greener synthesis of them to bring down the environmental impact of toxic reagents, wastes and byproducts. All these current challenges are reviewed at the present article in an effort to evaluate environmental implications of nanomaterials technology by means of a complete, reliable and critical vision. 相似文献

Competition among mammalian siblings for scarce resources can be severe. Whereas research to date has focused on competition
for the mother’s milk, the young of many (particularly altricial) species might also be expected to compete for thermally
favorable positions within the nest, den, or litter huddle. We investigated this in newborn pups of the European rabbit Oryctolagus cuniculus, a species in which the altricial young are not brooded by the mother, and in which competition for milk is severe. In eight
unculled litters (N = 86 pups) of a domestic chinchilla strain, we calculated huddling indexes for individual pups on postnatal days 2–5 as a
measure of the degree of insulation they received from littermates. Pups maintained almost constant physical contact with
the litter huddle. They performed brief but frequent rooting and climbing behaviors, which usually improved their huddling
index, interspersed with longer periods of quiescence during which their huddling index declined. As expected, we found a
significant positive relation between pups’ mean huddling index and body temperature. Unexpectedly, however, we did not find
a relation between huddling index and pups’ birth weight, survival, milk intake, or efficiency of converting milk to body
mass. We conclude that rather than competing for thermally advantageous positions within the huddle newborn rabbits share
out thermally advantageous positions as they move in a continual dynamic flow through it. Thus, in newborn rabbits, competition
for the mother’s milk exists alongside mutual “cooperative” benefits of littermate presence.

A laboratory study has been carried out to determine the feasibility of in situ remediation of chromium (VI)-contaminated
soil using electrodialysis in relation to its speciation in soil. This technique is best suited for low-permeability soils
or sediments, which may be difficult to remediate by other means and implies the application of a low-intensity direct current
to the soil, which is separated from the electrode compartments by ion-exchange membranes. A clayey soil was prepared for
use in the experiments and was characterized before being mixed with a solution of potassium dichromate for several days to
produce a final Cr content of 4,056 mg/kg of soil dry wt. Remediation tests were carried out under constant-voltage conditions
for periods of 7–14 days and the evolution of applied current to the cell, pH, and conductivity of the electrolytes were recorded
periodically. Fractionation of chromium was determined for soil samples before and after remediation using a standardized
four-step sequential extraction procedure (SEP) with acetic acid, hydroxylamine, hydrogen peroxide, and aqua regia solutions.
Results show that chromium is mobilized from the most labile phases (soluble/exchangeable/carbonate). In a 15 V test, SEP
results show that the amount of chromium extracted in the first step drops from 80% to 9%, but also that changes in the total
chromium distribution occur during the treatment with some transferred to other soil phases that are more difficult to mobilize. 相似文献

The selection and establishment of the structure (number and compartments, aggregation criteria, and trophic links) of the food webs is a critical task in trophic modelling. The present work proposes a systematic method to structure trophic networks in pelagic food webs. The biomass-size spectrum (BSS) is a well-established approach to analyze the structure of pelagic communities, and the body size is especially related to the ecological role of the organisms in the pelagic environment. To structure food webs, this work uses detailed arrangements of the community in size classes with increasing widths (like Sheldon-type BSS) as first aggregation criteria, and BSS theory as a framework to integrate the available knowledge about feeding selectivity in order to obtain a method to identify the trophic links between compartments. Diet composition matrices were estimated through the combination of a probability of encounter for each food type and a specific probability of ingestion related to the food size selectivity and other food quality characteristics (e.g., morphology and nutritional quality). The feasibility of this approach has been illustrated through data of size-structured communities extracted from the literature including different planktonic predator guilds (nanoflagellates, cladoceran-dominated zooplankton and copepod-dominated zooplankton) in a high mountain lake (La Caldera, Spain), two subtropical wetland lakes (meso-oligotrophic Laguna Galarza and eutrophic Laguna Iberá, Argentina) and a marine microcosm (Alborán Sea, Mediterranean). The identification of “who eats whom” and “by how much” also allows for more accurate analyses of the trophic control in the BSS. The reproduction and growth of Isostichopus fuscus (Ludwig, 1875) at Isla Espíritu Santo, Baja California Sur, México from July 1992 to September 1993 and from August 1996
to July 1997 were analyzed. The reproductive cycle was monitored by using histological analysis. Five gonadal stages were
described according to cell types present in the gonad; undetermined, gametogenesis, maturity, spawning and post-spawning.
This holothurian reproduces annually during summer (July to September), when sea surface temperature reaches 27 °C. The gonad
index is related to the gonadal stages. The first sexual maturity for I. fuscus was calculated at 367 g (4 to 5 years old) according to the von Bertalanffy equation, and nearly all the specimens at Isla
Espíritu Santo were 5 to 7 years old (including some individuals over 35 years old). Data of the length–weight relationship
showed that I. fuscus grows allometrically at the studied site (b = 1.83). The mortality rate was relatively high (M = 0.51), indicating that in a typical cohort, 40% of the recruits does not survive the first year, and less than 20% reaches
maturity.
