Potential nitrification rates (PNR) directly associated with isolated marine macrobenthic invertebrates were measured for a range of benthic epifaunal and infaunal species (bivalves, gastropods, polychaetes and crustaceans) collected from the Sacca di Goro, Po River delta, Italy. In the case of the filter-feeding bivalves, Tapes philippinarum and Mytilus galloprovicialis the PNR associated with the shell surfaces and dissected animal tissues (gills, siphons and residual tissue) were determined separately, in order to assess the distribution of the nitrifier populations. Significant PNR was found associated with all the tested macrofaunal species with activities ranging between 12 and 2,250 nmol ind.–1 day–1 and specific activities between 150 and 18,400 nmol g–1 dry weight day–1. However, no simple relationships were observed between PNR and the animals taxonomic or functional group, or with animal comportment (infaunal or epifaunal) or size class, indicating that more complex interactions may regulate the degree of colonisation of the animals by nitrifier populations. Incubations of shells alone and dissected tissues of the bivalves T. philippinarum and M. galloprovicialis demonstrated that approximately 50% of the total PNR activity was associated with the shell surfaces and 50% with the internal animal tissues, with the highest specific activities of 950 and 1,970 nmol g–1 dry weight day–1 determined for the gills of T. philippinarum and M. galloprovicialis, respectively. Thus, specific relationships may exist between the nitrifiers and their animal hosts. Overall, our data indicate that the macrofaunal stimulation of nitrification and/or coupled nitrification–denitrification observed in previous studies may not be solely due to the animals burrow walls serving as sites for nitrification, but also to the fact that the internal and external surfaces of the animals themselves are also colonised by nitrifying bacteria. Tentative calculations based on reported animal densities in the Sacca di Goro and the determined PNRs indicate that animal-associated nitrifier populations could contribute significantly to overall nitrification rates in situ, although further experiments are required to determine to what extent the potential rates measured in this study are realised under in situ conditions.Communicated by R. Plutonium isotopes in the Rh?ne River originate from both the weathering of the catchment basin contaminated by global atmospheric fallout, and the liquid effluents released from the Marcoule reprocessing plant since 1961. Due to a new treatment process applied to the liquid effluents, a decrease of two orders of magnitude in the industrial plutonium discharged into the River Rh?ne has been registered from 1991. Today, 238Pu industrial inputs to the River Rh?ne are still about 10 times higher than those derived from global fallout, while 239+240Pu inputs from industrial and global fallout sources are of similar importance, i.e. 1 GBq y(-1). Our results indicate that the river sedimentary compartment act either as a sink or a delayed-source term of plutonium for the freshwaters depending on the hydraulic regime and flood events. This compartment may then represent an important industrial delayed-source term for the River Rh?ne freshwaters in the coming years as the Marcoule reprocessing plant is being dismantled. These results were obtained from samples collected from the lower course of the River Rh?ne over the 1987-1998 period and analysed for 238Pu and 239+240Pu activities. Both river sedimentary inventories of plutonium isotopes and effective outputs from the River Rh?ne towards the Gulf of Lions have been estimated for each year over the 1945-2000 period. Regarding 239+240Pu, the sedimentary inventory accumulated since 1945 is estimated to be 172+/-35 GBq. If mobile, this amount represents a significant delayed-source term of plutonium on the scale of the Rh?ne watershed.  相似文献

Invertebrates harbouring endosymbiotic chemoautotrophic bacteria are widely distributed in a variety of reducing marine habitats, including deep-sea hydrothermal vents. Bathymodiolids are dominants of the biomass at geochemically distinct vent sites of the Mid Atlantic Ridge (MAR) and thus are good candidates to study biological processes in response to site-specific conditions. To satisfy their nutritional requirements, these organisms depend to varying extent on two types of chemoautotrophic symbionts and on filterfeeding. The quantitative relationships of the nutritional modes are poorly understood. Using enzyme cytochemistry, electron microscopy and X-ray microanalysis, the structural and functional aspects of the cellular equipment necessary for lysosomal digestion was studied. We provide evidence for the following: (1) the basis of intracellular digestion of symbionts in Bathymodiolus azoricus from two geochemically distinct vent sites was not mainly in the large lysosomal bodies as previously thought (based on the membranous content resembling bacteria); (2) senescent bacteria are autolysed, possibly by bacterial acid phosphatase, that is more likely a cell cycling of the symbionts rather than an active lysosomal digestion by the host; (3) the consistent absence of hydrolases may indicate the improper use of the name “lysosome” for large vesicles at the base of the gill bacteriocytes (4) nutrient transfer in B. azoricus, therefore, may more likely be accomplished through leaking of metabolites from the symbiont to the host, not excluding lysosomal resorption of dead bacteria as an auxiliary strategy for organic molecule transfer; (5) evidence is provided for microvillar transfer of substances from the seawater that may indicate filter-feeding, in non-symbiotic ciliated gill cells of mussels from Lucky Strike; (6) two types of lysosomal vesicles can be distinguished in digestive cells based on their enzymatic content and their elemental composition.  相似文献

Aim and Background Precautionary regulations for the production of genetically modified crops (Gentechnik-Pflanzenerzeugungsverordnung, GenTPflEV 2008) provide isolation distances for the cultivation of genetically modified maize – Bt-maize – in the vicinity of conventional maize cultivation (150?m) as well as of organic maize cultivation (300?m). Nature reserves are not included. The aim of this study was to investigate whether maize pollen of surrounding fields were dispersed in the Flora-Fauna-Habitat (FFH) Ruhlsdorfer Bruch. In the vicinity of the nature reserve Bt-maize species MON 810 as well as conventional maize was grown. The survey should provide appropriate isolation distances for the cultivation of Bt-maize with regard to sustainable protection of non-target-organisms (NTO) in the Ruhlsdorfer Bruch. Materials and Methods The collection of maize pollen in the Ruhlsdorfer Bruch was carried out at three sampling sites in the FFH or rather in the immediate vicinity in July and August 2007 by means of twelve technical and three biological pollen samplers. The technical samplers Sigma-2/PMF enable point sampling. They are primarily influenced by wind and topography and provide information about the effective entry, the maize pollen flow and the maize pollen deposition at the location of the sampler. Honey bees roam over longer distances and are hence planar collectors. Thus, they also provide information about the plants blooming in a distinct area. Furthermore, the biological preferences during the collection are captured, whereas a technical sampler does not perform a species dependent selection. Hence, both the technical and the biological samplers complement one another in their scope of application. The pollen samples were identified microscopically, enumerated quantitatively, and the pollen-DNA was analysed by means of the PCR-method. Results All monitoring sites at the Ruhlsdorfer Bruch revealed maize pollen entries. The pollen deposition reached values of 1.75 million maize pollen/m² in the close-up range. The monitoring sites located 120?m within the protected area still featured 99,000 maize pollen/m². As shown by the statistical analysis, at a distance of 1,000?m still 28,000 maize pollen/m² must be expected. The results of the microscopic pollen analysis of the pollen pellets proved that the bees collect maize pollen at all three sites. Although maize pollen is not the main food source the high collection efficiency of the bees resulted in large amounts of introduced pollen. The biomolecular proof of pollen-DNA in the field samples was corroborated by analogue results for both the technical and biological pollen sampling by two independent laboratories. The results of these quality controlled analyses gave unambiguous evidence that under the cultivation conditions in 2007 an entry of Bt-maize pollen into the FFH Ruhlsdorfer Bruch was existent. Discussion The maize pollen deposition at the Ruhlsdorfer Bruch corresponds with additional supra-regional investigations which were conducted over several years with the same method. However, the pollen entries into the Ruhlsdorfer Bruch are above-average. Possible reasons are the size of the maize fields (>?10?ha), the geographical collocation between maize fields and protected area (lee location, through-shaped, thermal currents) as well as weather conditions and maize bloom during the sampling period July and August 2007. A distance of 1,000?m or more is necessary to avoid maize pollen deposition of more than 100,000/m² with a probability of 90?%. Conclusions The results of this investigation prove an entry of Bt-maize pollen into the FFH under the cultivation and weather conditions in summer 2007. According to the results of this and related studies and considering precautionary principle and the effect terms defined in the Federal Immission Protection Law, it becomes clear that reasonable isolation distances between Bt-maize fields and protected areas have to be introduced in order to minimise the entry of GM-maize pollen and to prevent adverse effects on protected NTOs. Recommendations Due to the fact that no toxicological investigations are available for the butterflies occurring in the FFH, highest protection standards should be implemented to avoid Bt-maize pollen entries into the Ruhlsdorfer Bruch. That implies that highest possible isolation distances for Bt-maize cultivation have to be considered, but at least a distance of 1,000?m is recommended. Following this a maize pollen deposition of more than 100,000 maize pollen/m² should be pevented with a certainty of 90?% as well as an exceeding exposure of foraging insects. Outlook By means of the pollen monitoring it becomes possible to survey empirically defined limits of pollen exposure. This should be performed in the nature reserve area at sites of expected maximum exposure, e.?g. at the boundaries of the FFH towards the maize fields and at exposed sites.  相似文献

The UN Framework Convention of Climate Change 15th Conference of the Parties Copenhagen Accord has been followed up by national pledges of greenhouse gas emissions reductions in the year 2020 without specifying measures to enforce actions. As a consequence, the capacity of parties to fulfil their obligations is of basic interest. This article outlines the effects of full compliance with pledges on greenhouse gas emissions, economic growth, and trade. The study is based on the global computable general equilibrium model global responses to anthropogenic changes in the environment (GRACE) distinguishing between fossil and non-fossil energy use. Global emissions from fossil fuels in 2020 turn out to be 15 % lower than in a business as usual scenario and 3 % below the global emissions from fossil fuels in 2005. China and India increase their emissions to 1 % and 5 % above business as usual levels in 2020. India and Russia increase their net export of steel corresponding to around 30 and 45 % of their production levels in 2020. In spite of some leakage of energy intensive production also to China, we find that structural change remains the dominant factor behind the rapid reduction of CO2 emission intensity in China towards 2020.  相似文献

The coexistence of closely related plant parasites is widespread. Yet, understanding the ecological determinants of evolutionary divergence in plant parasites remains an issue. Niche differentiation through resource specialization has been widely researched, but it hardly explains the coexistence of parasites exploiting the same host plant. Time-partitioning has so far received less attention, although in temperate climates, parasites may specialize on either the early or the late season. Accordingly, we investigated whether seasonality can also promote phenotypic divergence. For plant parasites, seasonality generally engenders periodic host absence. To account for abrupt seasonal events, we made use of an epidemic model that combines continuous and discrete dynamics. Based on the assumption of a trade-off between in-season transmission and inter-season survival, we found through an "evolutionary invasion analysis" that evolutionary divergence of the parasite phenotype can occur. Since such a trade-off has been reported, this study provides further ecological bases for the coexistence of closely related plant parasites. Moreover, this study provides original insights into the coexistence of sibling plant pathogens which perform either a single or several infection cycles within a season (mono- and polycyclic diseases, or uni- and multivoltine life cycles).  相似文献

In a study of 133 volunteer subjects, demographic, physiologic and pharmacokinetic data through exposure to 1,3-Butadiene (BD) were collected in order to estimate the percentage of BD concentration metabolized at steady state, and to determine whether this percentage varies across gender, racial, and age groups. During the 20 min of continuous exposure to 2 parts per million (ppm) of BD, five measurements of exhaled concentration were made on each subject. In the following 40 min washout period, another five measurements were collected. A Bayesian hierarchical compartmental physiologically-based pharmacokinetic model (PKPB) was used. Using prior information on the model parameters, Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulation was conducted to obtain posterior distributions. The overall estimate of the mean percent of BD metabolized at steady state was 12.7% (95% credible interval: 7.7–17.8%). There was no significant difference in gender with males having a mean of 13.5%, and females 12.3%. Among the racial groups, Hispanic (13.9%), White (13.0%), Asian (12.1%), and Black (10.9%), the significant difference came from the difference between Black and Hispanic with a 95% credible interval from −5.63 to −0.30%. Those older than 30 years had a mean of 12.2% versus 12.9% for the younger group; although this was not a statistically significant difference. Given a constant inhalation input of 2 ppm, at steady state, the overall mean exhaled concentration was estimated to be 1.75ppm (95% credible interval: 1.64–1.84). An equivalent parameter, first-order metabolic rate constant, was also estimated and found to be consistent with the percent of BD metabolized at steady state across gender, race, and age strata.  相似文献
