Nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) was isolated from a totally chlorine free (TCF) bleached oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) pulp via acid hydrolysis using a 58 % sulfuric acid concentration and ultrasonic treatment. The effects of acid concentration and hydrolysis time were investigated. Characterization of OPEFB–NCC was carried out using TEM, FTIR, 13C-NMR, XRD, zeta potential and TGA. The optimal hydrolysis time was 80 min as indicated by the leveling off of the OPEFB–NCC dimensions (length 150 nm and diameter 6.5 nm) with no significant loss of crystallinity at this point. The presence of a shoulder peak at 1231 cm?1 (assigned to a sulfate group) in the FTIR spectrum of NCC is indicative of a successful esterification. This is further corroborated by the 13C-NMR analysis whereby the distinct C4 amorphous and crystalline peaks present in OPEFB–TCF pulp had almost disappeared and the cluster of signals for C2, C3, C5, and a well separated signal of C6 had merged into one single peak in the OPEFB–NCC sample. These observations allude to most of the amorphous region having been removed and to the strong possibility of sulfonation having not only occurred on the C6, but also on C2 and C3. OPEFB–NCC isolated over shorter hydrolysis time was more thermally stable; however, the char fraction decreases with hydrolysis time despite having a higher zeta potential. The results of this investigation demonstrate that NCC can be produced from pulp made by chlorine free environmentally benign processes with ensuing savings in energy and chemicals. 相似文献

Interactions among chloride, sulfate, and silica removals from recycled industrial wastewater using an ultra-high lime with aluminum process (UHLA) were studied. An equilibrium model that is able to accurately predict the chemical behavior and interactions between chloride and sulfate or silica with UHLA at various initial conditions and chemical reagents was developed. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis was conducted to identify the precipitated solids formed in the UHLA process. Model predictions indicated that simultaneous removal of sulfate and chloride can be best described by the formation of a solid solution containing calcium chloroaluminate, calcium sulfoaluminate (ettringite), calcium monosulfate, tricalcium hydroxyaluminate, and tetracalcium hydroxyaluminate. However, simultaneous removal of silica and chloride can be best described by precipitation of calcium silicate and calcium aluminosilicate in addition to a solid solution containing calcium chloroaluminate, tricalcium hydroxyaluminate, and tetracalcium hydroxyaluminate. Ten organochlorine compounds were analyzed in four species of fish (Bouri Mugil spp., Denis Sparus auratus, Moza Boops boops and Mousa Pegusa lascaris), from four Egyptian governorates (South Sinai, Suez, Port-Said and Demietta). Although all fish studied are bottom or near-bottom feeders, remarkable variations between studied species were noticed. The grand total values recorded at the studied governorates were in descending order: Bouri>Denis>Moza>Mousa. The highest concentration of pesticides was recorded in Demietta governorate fish (20-211 ng/g of wet weight) and the p,p'-DDE dominated over the other p,p'-isomers in all studied fish, while dieldrin was the dominated in the studied cyclodiene compounds. However, hexachlorobenzene (HCB) occurred at all studied governorate fish except Mousa fish from South Sinai. Toxaphene was detected only in fish (Bouri, Denis, and Mousa) from Demietta governorate. Chlordane was not detected in any studied fish. The level of organochlorine pesticides contamination in fish from the studied governorates is relatively low and should not pose a health risk to consumers. 相似文献

In this study, we analyze the complexity of plant spatial patterns and diversity along a successional gradient resulting from grazing disturbance in four characteristic ecosystems of the Mediterranean region. Grazing disturbance include not only defoliation by animals, but also associated disturbances as animal trampling, soil compaction, and mineralization by deposition of urine and feces. The results show that woodland and dense matorral are more resistant to species loss than middle dense and scattered matorral, or grassland. Information fractal dimension declined as we moved from a dense to a discontinuous matorral, increasing as we moved to a more scattered matorral and a grassland. In all studied cases, the characteristic species of the natural vegetation declined in frequency and organization with grazing disturbance. Heliophyllous species and others with postrate or rosette twigs increased with grazing pressure, particularly in dense matorral. In the more degraded ecosystem, only species with well-adapted traits, e.g., buried buds or unpalatable qualities showed a clear increase with grazing. Indeed, the homogeneity of species distribution within the plant community declined monotonically with grazing impact. Conversely, the spatial organization of the characteristic plants of each community increased in the better-preserved areas, being also related to the sensitivity of the species to grazing impact. The degree of autocorrelation of plant spatial distribution at the species level and the information fractal dimension at the community level allow us to quantify the degree of degradation of natural communities and to determine the sensitivity of key species to disturbance. 相似文献

Several immunosuppressive factors are associated with parasitism of an endoparasitoid wasp, Cotesia plutellae, on the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella. C. plutellae bracovirus (CpBV) encodes a large number of putative protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTPs), which may play a role in inhibiting
host cellular immunity. To address this inhibitory hypothesis of CpBV-PTPs, we performed transient expression of individual
CpBV-PTPs in hemocytes of the beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua, and analyzed their cellular immune responses. Two different forms of CpBV-PTPs were chosen and cloned into a eukaryotic
expression vector under the control of the p10 promoter of baculovirus: one with the normal cysteine active site (CpBV-PTP1)
and the other with a mutated active site (CpBV-PTP5). The hemocytes transfected with CpBV-PTP1 significantly increased in
PTP activity compared to control hemocytes, but those with CpBV-PTP5 exhibited a significant decrease in the PTP activity.
All transfected hemocytes exhibited a significant reduction in both cell spreading and encapsulation activities compared to
control hemocytes. Co-transfection of CpBV-PTP1 together with its double-stranded RNA reduced the messenger RNA (mRNA) level
of CpBV-PTP1 and resulted in recovery of both hemocyte behaviors. This is the first report demonstrating that the polydnaviral

Natural radioactivity in farm soil and phosphate fertilizer and its environmental implications in Qena governorate, Upper Egypt 总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Samples of phosphate fertilizers and farm soils, taken to a depth of up to 30 cm in cultivated land, were collected over the Qena governorate, Upper Egypt. Activity concentration of background radionuclides such as (226)Ra, (232)Th and (40)K of these samples were determined by gamma-ray spectrometry. The results show that these radionuclides were present in concentrations of 366+/-10.5, 66.7+/-7.3 and 4+/-2.6 Bq/kg for phosphate fertilizers. For farm soil and Nile island's soil the corresponding values were 13.7+/-7, 12.3+/-4.6, 1233+/-646 and 11.9+/-6.7, 10.5+/-6.1, 1636+/-417 Bq/kg, respectively. The radium equivalent activity (Ra(eq)), the representative level index, I(gamma r), and absorbed dose in air for all samples were calculated. Building materials cause direct radiation exposure because of their radium, thorium and potassium content. In this paper, samples of commonly used building materials (bricks, cement, gypsum, ceramics, marble, limestone and granite) in Qena city, Upper Egypt have been collected randomly over the city. The samples were tested for their radioactivity contents by using gamma spectroscopic measurements. The results show that the highest mean value of (226)Ra activity is 205+/-83 Bqkg(-1) measured in marble. The corresponding value of (232)Th is 118+/-14 Bqkg(-1) measured in granite. For (40)K this value is (8.7+/-3.9)x10(2) Bqkg(-1) measured in marble. The average concentrations of the three radionuclides in the different building materials are 116+/-54, 64+/-34 and (4.8+/-2.2)x10(2) Bqkg(-1) for (226)Ra, (232)Th and (40)K, respectively. Radium equivalent activities and various hazard indices were also calculated to assess the radiation hazard. The maximum mean of radium equivalent activity Ra(eq) is 436+/-199 Bqkg(-1) calculated in marble. The highest radioactivity level and dose rate in air from these materials were calculated in marble. 相似文献
