I investigated selective particle ingestion by oyster larvae (Crassostrea virginica) feeding on natural seston from Chesapeake Bay and laboratory-cultured algae of different sizes or chemical content. In 15 of 16 experiments with complex natural suspensions as food, small(<150 m) and large (>150 m) larvae selected most strongly for small (2 to 4 m) food particles, but in the presence of a large (>10 m)-cell dinoflagellate bloom, large larvae strongly selected much larger (22 to 30 m) food material (presumably dinoflagellates). When fed simplified mixtures of four cultured algal species (Synechococcus bacillaris, Isochrysis sp., Dunaliella tertiolecta, and Prorocentrum minimum) ranging in size from 1 to 11 m, small larvae preferred 1 m algae while large larvae preferred 11 m algae. In experiments with algal mixtures, and with suspensions of natural particles and added algae, large larvae preferred algal species harvested from exponential-phase cultures over other species from stationary-phase cultures. Larval ingestion rates of the cultured alga Thalassiosira pseudonana were about three times higher for cells with a low carbon:nitrogen ratio (7.2:1) than for high C:N ratio (16.2:1) cells when these cells were offered separately in suspensions of equal concentration. As a result, more algal cells, algal C, and algal N was ingested by larvae fed low C:N cells. However, larvae did not show a significant preference for either type of cell when they were offered in a 1:1 cell mixture. Feeding patterns of C. virginica larvae in natural food suspensions can vary with the composition of these complex suspensions, and ingestion seems dependent not only on the size, but on the growth rate and chemical quality of food particles.  相似文献

Lysmata wurdemanni (Gibbes) is a protandric simultaneous hermaphrodite. All individuals first mature as a male-phase individual (MP) and then later change to a female-phase individual (FP) that spawns and broods embryos but can also mate as a male. A Gulf of Mexico population was sampled monthly for 1 year and bimonthly the next. Estimates of basic population parameters were obtained from cohort analysis to reveal possible factors explaining the unusual sexual biology of L. wurdemanni as well as the broad variation in the size (age) of change from MP to FP. Growth rates of individuals from cohorts varied from 4–7 mm carapace length year -1. Growth of small MPs in the laboratory was somewhat faster but concordant with growth rates estimated from field samples. The period from recruitment to >50% sex change in cohorts varied from 3 months to 1 year. In the laboratory, the size and interval to sex change was similar to that of the most rapidly changing cohort observed. Survivorship of cohorts was high until later in life; life-span was estimated to be 12–18 months. Rates of sex change were highest from late winter through spring, in time for the spring–summer breeding season. The size and age of sex change in cohorts were related to the season of recruitment. MPs recruited from late winter to mid-spring rapidly changed to FPs at a relatively small size. A majority of MPs recruited in the summer and autumn did not change to FPs until the following late winter to spring, and they did so at a larger size. Rates of sex change were not correlated with the sexual composition of the population. We conclude that seasonal factors related to female breeding greatly influence sex change in L. wurdemanni. We found no evidence to support demographically influenced and socially mediated environmental sex determination, which has been suggested for L. wurdemanni and other sex-changing caridean shrimps.  相似文献

The present study investigated the sublethal effects of the largest aqueous waste associated with offshore oil development, produced water (PW), on sea urchin embryo development. PW inhibited normal gastrulation in purple sea urchin (Strongylocentrotus purpuratus) embryos exposed at the hatching stage. The exposed embryos did not form complete archenterons, and secondary mesenchyme cells exhibited an unusual behavior with respect to the wall of the blastocoelic cavity. In addition, an abundance of extracellular matrix was observed in the blastocoelic cavities in the embryos exposed to higher concentrations of PW. An inhibition of the development of embryos through the pluteus stage was observed as a result of PW exposure. This was manifested by inhibition of normal spicule formation with concomitant abnormal pluteus morphology. To determine if a biochemical stress response occurs as a result of PW exposure, embryos at the early gastrula stage were exposed to PW for 2 h, followed by an additional 1 h in 3H-leucine and PW. These embryos expressed a 253 kDa protein as observed by one-dimensional SDS (sodium dodecyl sulfate) polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and autoradiography. This protein could occasionally be observed in gels stained for protein, and was glycosylated as demonstrated by staining with periodic acid Schiff (PAS). The 70 to 73 kDa heat-shock proteins previously described in sea urchin embryos (and other organisms) as a result of stress were not synthesized as a result of PW exposure. Heat shock did not induce synthesis of the 253 kDa glycoprotein. Combined PW and heat-shock exposure elicited both the heat-shock response (73 kDa protein) as well as expression of the 253 kDa glycoprotein. These data demonstrate the use of expression of endogenous macromolecular markers to distinguish exposures of embryos to different perturbations. Arsenic (as sodium arsenite), a metal constituent of PW, also induced the 253 kDa glycoprotein in early gastrula-stage embryos. We suggest that this glycoprotein may be a marker for PW (and a metal constituent) exposure in sea urchin embryos, and may be related to morphological abnormalities.  相似文献

The role of birds in intertidal food webs is mediated by effects of tides on the habitat, distribution, and accessibility of food organisms. We studied effects of elevation, sediment characteristics, vegetation, and tidal cycles on waterfowl feeding and food organisms in Boundary Bay, British Columbia, Canada from September to March 1990–1992. Percent dry mass of esophageal contents was mainly Zostera japonica leaves (84%) for American wigeon (Anas americana Gmelin), and leaves of Z. japonica (57%) and Z. marina (41%) for brant (Branta bernicla L.). Northern pintails (A. acuta L.) and mallards (A. platyrhynchos L.) ate mostly the leaves, seeds, and rhizomes of Z. japonica (48 and 72%, respectively) and gastropods (12 and 28%). Green-winged teal (A. crecca L.) ate mainly amphipods (68%) and saltmarsh seeds (19%). The well-sorted fine sand (median 0.125 mm) to medium sand (0.25 mm), and the low organic carbon content (1.31±0.12% dry mass), did not appear to vary sufficiently along 2.1- and 2.6-km transects to affect macroinvertebrate distributions. Three habitat zones were recognized: (1) upper intertidal (sandflats); (2) mid-intertidal (largely monotypic Z. japonica); and (3) lower intertidal (mixed Z. japonica and Z. marina). These zones, although related to elevation, had greater influence on amphipod distributions than did elevation alone or detrital biomass. Biomass and numbers of most invertebrate foods of waterfowl were greatest in the eelgrass zones, with the upper elevational limit of Z. japonica occurring at about Mean Water Level (MWL). Accordingly, wigeon, pintails, and mallards fed mostly below MWL. Because of seasonal tidal cycles, daily accessibility of areas below MWL but within reach of surfacefeeding waterfowl decreased from a mean of 10.8 h in October to 9.6 h in December. In October only 10 d and <12 h available feeding time, whereas in December and January every day had <12 h available feeding time. Seasonal effects of tides on accessibility might limit sufficient feeding by some waterfowl species in intertidal areas, increasing their reliance on alternative feeding sites.  相似文献

The presence of mesopelagic organisms in the guts of surface-foraging seabirds feeding in open areas within seasonal pack ice in the Antarctic has given rise to questions regarding the effects of pack ice on the underlying mesopelagic community. Bottom-moored free-vehicle acoustic instruments were used in concert with midwater trawls and baited traps to examine the abundance, size distribution and vertical distribution of pelagic organisms in the uppermost 100 m of the water column during the austral spring of 1992 in two areas of the northwestern Weddell Sea, one covered by seasonal pack icc and the other free of ice cover. Acoustic largets were more abundant and significantly larger at the open-water station than beneath pack ice. However, targets at the ice-covered site exhibited a pronounced diel pattern, with the largest targets detected only at night. Samples from night trawls at the icecovered site contained several species of large, vertically-migrating mesopelagic fishes, whereas these species were absent from trawls taken during the day. In addition, baited traps deployed in pack ice just beneath the ice-water interface collected large numbers of scavenging lysianassoid amphipods, while deeper traps beneath the ice and traps at the open-water station were empty, indicating the presence of a scavenging community associated with the undersurface of the ice. These results sapport the idea that mesopelagic organisms migrate closer to the surface beneath pack ice than in open water, exposing them to possible predation by surface-foraging seabirds.  相似文献
