Photocatalytically active thin TiO(2) films were produced by spin-coating or dip-coating an alkoxy precursor onto a transparent conducting electrode substrate and by thermal oxidation of titanium metal. The thin films were used to study the photoelectrocatalytic or photoelectrochemical degradation of oxalic acid and 4-chlorophenol (4-CP) under near UV (monochromatic, 365 nm) light irradiation. Degradation was monitored by a variety of methods. In the course of oxalic acid degradation, CO(2) formation accounted for up to 100% of the total organic carbon degradation for medium starting concentrations; for the degradation of 4-CP, less CO(2) was detected due to the higher number of oxidation steps, i.e. intermediates. Incident-photon-to-current conversion efficiency, educt degradation and product formation as well as Faradaic efficiencies were calculated for the degradation experiments. Quantum yields and Faradaic efficiencies were found to be strongly dependent on concentration, with maximum values (quantum yield) around 1 for the highest concentrations of oxalic acid.  相似文献

Color patterns of the shallow-water shrimps Heptacarpus pictus and H. paludicola are formed by chromatosomes (usually termed chromatophores) located beneath the translucent exoskeleton. Development of color patterns is related to size (age) and sex. The color expressed is determined by the chromatosome pigment dispersion, arrangement, and density. In populations with well-developed coloration (H. pictus from Cayucos, California, 1976–1978, H. paludicola from Argyle Channel, San Juan Island, Washington, June–July, 1978), prominent coloration was a characteristic of maturing females, breeding females, and some of the larger males. In the Morro Bay, California, population of H. paludicola (sampled 1976–1978), color patterns were poorly developed except in a few large females. In both species, most shrimp lose color at night because of pigment retraction in certain chromatosomes. In both species, there are 5 basic morphs: 1 transparent and 4 colored morphs. In the colored morphs, the color patterns are composed of bands, stripes, and spots which appear to disrupt the body outline. Each color morph also has a common environmental color in its color pattern, e.g the green of green algae, the whites and pinks of dead and living coralline algae, and various shades of tidepool litter. These shrimps are apparently under heavy predation pressure by fish, and it is suggested that the color patterns are camouflage against such visually-hunting predators.  相似文献

Summary The carabid beetle Notiophilus biguttatus hunts springtails and mites by visual cues. The preycapture behaviour of the beetle and the escape behaviour of the springtails were analysed by means of highspeed films. N. biguttatus has between 900 and 1250 ommatidia in each compound eye. The visual space covers ca. 200° in the horizontal plane, with a binocular overlap of no more than 74°. The fovea, the part of the eye where the pseudopupil is largest, points straight ahead of a beetle in its normal posture.The structure of the visual space was determined from measurements of the optical axes in the horizontal plane (plane of fixation) over the middle of the eye. Because of the slanted position of the ommatidia under the cornea, the optical axes point more towards the front or the back of the animal than do the anatomical axes.The optical axes were used to construct the binocular visual space in the horizontal plane. The point E , to which an estimation of distance is possible, lies on the midline 42.6 mm away from the front edges of the eyes. Resolution rapidly decreases with increasing distance, particularly depth resolution.At a distance corresponding to that from which the beetle attacks its prey, depth and width resolution correspond roughly to the dimensions of the smallest prey animals. The smallest measured directional corrections made by the beetle prior to attack (2°–3°) correspond approximately to the divergence angles in the fovea ( h=2.2°), and the smallest measured distance correction prior to attack (0.2 mm) corresponds approximately to the depth resolution at attack distance.Supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (SFB 4)  相似文献

We adopt an interpersonal perspective and examine the adaptive effects of managers' perceived stress on their behavior towards subordinates. Drawing from the transactional model of stress (Lazarus & Folkman, 1984), we advance a model that highlights the propensity for stressed managers to engage in prosocial coping behaviors towards their employees, which in turn are related to lower levels of turnover and higher levels of job performance. We tested our predictions in a sample of 281 employees and their 53 managers working in a clothing retailer in Turkey. Consistent with predictions, we found positive effects of managers' perceived stress on their prosocial coping behaviors and employee outcomes. Managers' perceived stress was positively related to sharing credit with employees for managers who held positive implicit prototypes about employees. Results also indicated that managers' perceived stress was positively related to sharing knowledge with their subordinates regardless of implicit follower prototypes. Both sharing credit and sharing knowledge, in turn, were related to turnover intentions and actual turnover, and sharing credit was related to job performance. This study extends past work by adopting an interpersonal perspective of stress and demonstrating that managerial stress can have positive effects on employee outcomes via prosocial coping behaviors.  相似文献

We analyzed possible causes of changes in species abundance, range size, and diversity as well as extinctions and colonizations in a central European bird community. Using data from the semiquantitative "Lake Constance" breeding bird atlas, we demonstrated that changes in regional abundances from 1980–1981 to 1990–1992 of 151 coexisting bird species were influenced by breeding habitat and migratory status. Significant declines were found in populations of farmland species and long-distance migrants. Farmland species lost parts of their ranges but hardly changed in local abundance in sites where they still occurred. In contrast, declines in long-distance migrants were caused by significant declines in local abundance with only slight loss of occupied range. Regional extinctions and colonizations were predictable from overall population trends. For example, all species that went extinct were either farmland species or long-distance migrants. Avian community composition was influenced by disproportionate declines of abundant species. This led to declines in the total number of breeding pairs and in community biomass and to increases in community evenness, but to only slight declines in species richness. Future conservation efforts in Europe need to focus more on farmland species and on understanding causes for the declines of long-distance migrants.  相似文献

Heavy Metal data from a measurement program at a municipal incinerator in Vienna, Austria are analysed. The experimental design had a nested structure, and analysis of variance is used to break down the total variability into several components; (1) variability between mean hourly concentrations, (2) variability between mean sample concentrations within intervals of an hour and (3) variability due to “measurement” errors. Results of a pre-experiment show, that if grab samples are taken, within hour variation is dominant. The results of analysis of variance were used to calculate an optimal number of samples, which ensure a predetermined accuracy for the mean concentrations. In two main measuring periods with different incinerated waste types, slag and fly ash (ESP dust and boiler ash) data are produced and analysed. For both slag and fly ash, significant differences in measures of location and dispersion between the data sets of the main experiment are found. This proves, that differences in the chemical set up of waste can be detected via incineration residues.  相似文献
