Sex pheromones and attractants in the Eucosmini and Grapholitini (Lepidoptera,Tortricidae)

Summary The geometric isomers (E,E)-, (E,Z)-, (Z,E)-, and (Z,Z)-8,10-dodecadien-1-yl acetate were identified as sex pheromone components or sex attractants in the tribes Eucosmini and Grapholitini of the tortricid subfamily Olethreutinae. Species belonging to the more ancestral Tortricinae were not attracted. Each one isomer was behaviourally active in males ofCydia andGrapholita (Grapholitini), either as main pheromone compound, attraction synergist or attraction inhibitor. Their reciprocal attractive/antagonistic activity in a number of species enables specific communication with these four compounds.Pammene, as well as otherGrapholita andCydia responded to the monoenic 8- or 10-dodecen-1-yl acetates. Of the tribes Olethreutini and Eucosmini,Hedya, Epiblema, Eucosma, andNotocelia trimaculana were also attracted to 8,10-dodecadien-1-yl acetates, but several otherNotocelia to 10,12-tetradecadien-1-yl acetates. The female sex pheromones ofC. fagiglandana, C. pyrivora, C. splendana, Epiblema foenella andNotocelia roborana were identified. (E,E)- and (E,Z)-8,10-dodecadien-1-yl acetate are producedvia a commonE9 desaturation pathway inC. splendana. CallingC. nigricana andC. fagiglandana females are attracted to wingfanning males.     

Semilobar holoprosencephaly in a 46,XY female fetus

We report the prenatal echographic diagnosis of holoprosencephaly (HPE) at 11 weeks' gestation. Fetopathological examination revealed an unusual variant of semilobar HPE with middle interhemispheric fusion associated with sex-reversal: 46,XY normal male karyotype, normal external and internal female genitalia and streak gonads. Thermal degradation of 2-chlorophenol promoted by CuCl2 or CuCl: formation and destruction of PCDD/Fs

The oxidative degradation of 2-chlorophenol in air (equivalence ratio phi=0.8) was investigated at 350 degrees C by using the sealed tube technique under different conditions: in the gas phase and in the presence of copper chlorides (CuCl2 and CuCl in different proportions). Not only PCDD/Fs but carbon oxides and other organic products such as chlorophenols, chlorobenzenes, tetrachloroethylene and tetrachlorocyclopentenedione were quantified in order to evaluate the relative importance of reaction pathways. Additional experiments were performed to analyse the degradation products of octachlorodibenzodioxin and 2-monochlorodibenzodioxin. Although it was stated that chlorobenzenes could be formation precursors for PCDD/Fs, experimental data obtained in this work show that chlorobenzenes can also be degradation products of PCDD/Fs.     

The importance of biological factors affecting trace metal concentration as revealed from accumulation patterns in co-occurring terrestrial invertebrates

As physicochemical properties of the soil highly influence the bioavailable fraction of a particular trace metal, measured metal body burdens in a particular species are often assumed to be more reliable estimators of the contamination of the biota. To test this we compared the Cd, Cu and Zn content of three spiders (generalist predators) and two amphipods (detritivores), co-occurring in seven tidal marshes along the river Schelde, between each other and with the total metal concentrations and the concentrations of four sequential extractions of the soils. Correlations were significant in only one case and significant site x species interactions for all metals demonstrate that factors affecting metal concentration were species and site specific and not solely determined by site specific characteristics. These results emphasize that site and species specific biological factors might be of the utmost importance in determining the contamination of the biota, at least for higher trophic levels. A hypothetical example clarifies these findings.     

Photochemical degradation of selected nitropolycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in solution and adsorbed to solid particles

To examine the relationship between the nitro group orientation and photochemical degradation, a series of NPAHs, including 6-nitrochrysene, 9-nitroanthracene and 6-nitrobenzo(a)pyrene were irradiated both dissolved in CH3CN and adsorbed onto a surface (alumina, silica, carbon and cellulose). In solution, not all NPAHs displayed a relationship between their relative and nitro group orientation. In the adsorbed state, the nature of the particle appeared to have more of an influence than did the structure of the NPAH. If the compound degraded, the main product was generally a quinone.
