The isolation of biologically important low molecular weight organic acids from organically enriched sediments in Loch Eil, Scotland, was carried out by extraction of pore water with acidified ethyl acetate. High concentrations of acetic acid, up to 1.8 mg g-1 dry weight of sediment were found at Station E-24. Propionate, butyrate, valerate, lactate and traces of succinate were also found. Succinate was present in significant amounts, 42.2 g g-1 dry weight of sediment at Station E-70, which received a higher input of organic matter than E-24. Both propionate and succinate were absent from a control station in the Lynn of Lorne where the sediment was low in carbon compared with Loch Eil. In experimental tanks, acetate levels increased as the input of organic carbon (as cellulose) was increased up to a load level of 1.5 g m-2 day-1. Above this, acetate decreased and succinate appeared. Succinate was not detected in low-loaded tanks. Experiments with sieved mud showed a vertical distribution of the different acids with depth. Lactate and succinate reached highest concentration in the 0 to 3 cm layer, acetate at 3 to 6 cm and propionate at 6 to 9 cm. The results are discussed in relation to the role of these acids as food sources and as indicators of biochemical pathways taking place in sediments with different carbon input levels. 相似文献

Prior estimates of economic loss from ozone damage to food crops have not allowed for farmer substitution in inputs—and particularly have not allowed for acreage shifts between crops—in response to yield changes. This is a potentially serious problem since benefits from air pollution control legislation may also be estimated without allowing for this direct substitution. Adaptive cluster sampling (ACS) is a targeting sampling method that provides unbiased abundance estimators for populations
of rare species that may be inadequately sampled with simple random sampling (SRS). ACS has been used successfully to estimate
abundances of rockfish and sardine larvae from shipboard surveys. In this study, we describe the application of ACS for subtidal
macroalgae. Using SCUBA, we measured abundances of Codium mamillosum, C. pomoides, and Halimeda cuneata at three islands and two levels of wave exposure. The three species were relatively patchy and could be sampled with ACS
at one site per dive. Their distributions differed among islands and with exposure to wave energy, with H. cuneata found at only one island. ACS is a useful tool for understanding the spatial distribution and abundance of populations of

Summary. Many aquatic prey are known to use chemical alarm cues to assess their risk of predation. In fishes, such alarm cues can be
released either through damage of the epidermis during a predatory attack (capture-released) or through release from the predator
feces (diet-released). In our study, we compared the importance of capture- versus diet-released alarm cues in risk assessment
by fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas) that were na?ve to fish predators. We utilized two different fish predators: a specialized piscivore, the northern pike
(Esox lucius) and a generalist predator, the brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis). Handling time of pike consuming minnows was much shorter than for trout consuming minnows, likely resulting in less epidermal
damage to the minnows during attacks by pike. In accordance with this, minnows showed a less intense antipredator response
to capture-released cues from pike than capture-released cues from trout. This represents a paradox in risk assessment for
the minnows as they respond to the specialized piscivore, the more dangerous predator, with a less intense antipredator response.
In contrast, the minnows showed a stronger antipredator response to the specialized piscivore than to the generalist when
given diet cues. This work highlights the need for researchers to carefully consider the nature of the information available

Fire is a natural part of most forest ecosystems in the western United States, but its effects on nonnative plant invasion have only recently been studied. Also, forest managers are engaging in fuel reduction projects to lessen fire severity, often without considering potential negative ecological consequences such as nonnative plant species introductions. Increased availability of light, nutrients, and bare ground have all been associated with high-severity fires and fuel treatments and are known to aid in the establishment of nonnative plant species. We use vegetation and environmental data collected after wildfires at seven sites in coniferous forests in the western United States to study responses of nonnative plants to wildfire. We compared burned vs. unburned plots and plots treated with mechanical thinning and/or prescribed burning vs. untreated plots for nonnative plant species richness and cover and used correlation analyses to infer the effect of abiotic site conditions on invasibility. Wildfire was responsible for significant increases in nonnative species richness and cover, and a significant decrease in native cover. Mechanical thinning and prescribed fire fuel treatments were associated with significant changes in plant species composition at some sites. Treatment effects across sites were minimal and inconclusive due to significant site and site x treatment interaction effects caused by variation between sites including differences in treatment and fire severities and initial conditions (e.g., nonnative species sources). We used canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) to determine what combinations of environmental variables best explained patterns of nonnative plant species richness and cover. Variables related to fire severity, soil nutrients, and elevation explained most of the variation in species composition. Nonnative species were generally associated with sites with higher fire severity, elevation, percentage of bare ground, and lower soil nutrient levels and lower canopy cover. The choice of neighborhood definition and critical value in adaptive cluster sampling is critical for designing an efficient survey. In designing an efficient adaptive cluster sample one should aim for a small difference between the initial and final sample size, and a small difference between the within-network and population variances. However, the two aims can be at odds with each other because small differences between initial and final sample size usually means small within-network variance. One way to help in designing an efficient survey is to think in terms of small network sizes since the network size is a function of both critical value and neighborhood definition. One should aim for networks that are small enough to ensure the final sample size is not excessively large compared with the initial sample size but large enough to ensure the within-network variance is a reasonable fraction of the population variance. Parasites and pathogens often impose significant costs on their hosts. This is particularly true for social organisms, where the genetic structure of groups and the accumulation of contaminated waste facilitate disease transmission. In response, hosts have evolved many mechanisms of defence against parasites. Here we present evidence that Atta colombica, a leaf-cutting ant, may combat Escovopsis, a dangerous parasite of Atta's garden fungus, through a colony-level behavioural response. In A. colombica, garden waste is removed from within the colony and transported to the midden - an external waste dump - where it is processed by a group of midden workers. We found that colonies infected with Escovopsis have higher numbers of workers on the midden, where Escovopsis is deposited. Further, midden workers are highly effective in dispersing newly deposited waste away from the dumping site. Thus, the colony-level task allocation strategies of the Atta superorganism may change in response to the threat of disease to a third, essential party. 相似文献

Retreat and advance of shoreline position occurs naturally, and also as a result of defences which are constructed to prevent
erosion and flooding. Retreat more commonly manifests itself down-drift of defences due to a sediment deficit causing the
coast to become ‘set-back’. Advance normally develops due to sediment accumulation up-drift of a barrier inhibiting longshore
drift, resulting in the coast becoming ‘set-forward’. Many examples of set-backs and set-forwards are recorded, but their
location, number and cause is not known on a national scale. Using the Futurecoast aerial photographs, approximately 200 localities
were identified as set-back or set-forward in England and Wales, with half situated in the Eastern and South East regions
of England. Half of the total set-backs or set-forwards were on cliffed coasts, and half on low-lying coasts. Without local
knowledge it is difficult to distinguish between set-backs and set-forwards. Set-backs often indicate higher retreat rates,
thus threatening cliff-top infrastructure which requires defence upgrade and extensions, as well as raising maintenance costs.
Monitoring set-backs is important for shoreline management, because as retreat continues, set-backs evolve and artificial
headlands form and grow. This is reinforced by the shift from hard defence policies towards softer engineering approaches,
