IntroductionIn 2008, Surrey Fire Services, British Columbia, commenced a firefighter-delivered, door-to-door fire-prevention education and smoke alarm examination/installation initiative with the intention of reducing the frequency and severity of residential structure fires in the City of Surrey.MethodHigh-risk zones within the city were identified and 18,473 home visits were undertaken across seven temporal delivery cohorts (13.8% of non-apartment dwellings in the city). The frequency and severity of fires pre- and post- the home visit intervention was examined in comparison to randomized high-risk cluster controls.ResultsOverall, the frequency of fires was found to have reduced in the city overall, however, the reduction in the intervention cohorts was significantly larger than for controls. Furthermore, when fires did occur within the intervention cohorts, smoke detectors were activated more frequently and the fires were confined to the object of origin more often post-home visits. No equivalent pattern was observed for the cluster control.Impact on IndustryOn-duty fire fighters can reduce the frequency and severity of residential fires through targeted, door-to-door distribution of fire prevention education in high-risk areas.  相似文献

The covariance between hourly concentration (C) and depositionvelocity (V) for various atmospheric species may act to bias the dry deposition (D) computed from the product of the weeklyaverage C and V. This is a potential problem for the CASTNet filter pack (FP) species, nitric acid (HNO3). Using ozone (O3) behavior as a surrogate for HNO3, correctionfactors (CF) are developed to estimate this bias. Weekly CF for O3 depend on both site and season, and seasonal average weekly CF for O3 at a given site may be as high as 1.25.The seasonal magnitude of this CF is generally largest in summerand is ordered: summer fall spring > winter. The CF is drivento a large extent by the diurnal correlation between C andV (i.e., both are generally higher during the day and lower at night). However, since the diurnal C profile at elevated sites is relatively constant, the resulting correlation between C and V is small, and the CF at montane sites is generally negligiblysmall. The sampling protocol using daytime integrated sampling for a week and nighttime integrated sampling for a week capturesthe diurnal correlation between C and V adequately and may be used to aggregate relatively unbiased weekly D estimates. Day-night CF for O3 are close to unity, and limited results suggest similar behavior for HNO3. Using these limited FP results, the site- and seasonally-specific weekly CF forO3are refined to estimate the corresponding CF for HNO3. Worst-case adjustments for HNO3 as high as 30% are indicated for summer periods at a given site.  相似文献

Sorption of hydrophobic compounds in soils often shows nonlinearity, competition, and hysteresis. Since such behaviors have been associated with organic polymers in glassy state, it has been postulated that some forms of soil humic substances are glassy. The glassy state is favored by properties that decrease the flexibility of macromolecules, such as cross-linking, presence of unsaturated bonds, and high molecular weight. Polyvalent metal ions, which are abundant in soils, may cross-link humic substances by coordinating to multiple functional groups on different strands. Accordingly, we prepared an Al(3+)-cross-linked humic acid (Al-HA) from the H(+) form (H-HA) of a soil humic acid by a flocculation technique that leaves Al ions bound to organic groups. Sorption of naphthalene and 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene (TCB) on H-HA was nonlinear, competitive, and slightly hysteretic, in agreement with previous studies showing glass transition temperatures of humic acids that lie above room temperature. Nonlinearity, competition, and hysteresis were all enhanced in Al-HA, validating the hypothesis that metal ion cross-linking enhances nonideal sorption. Application of a glassy polymer sorption model reveals that cross-linking increases the affinity of solutes for the hole domain relative to the dissolution domain. The results (i) indicate that isolated, purified soil humic acid behaves like a glassy solid, (ii) indicate that metal-ion cross-linking creates a more rigid-chain structure and supports a link between nonideal sorption and the glassy character of soil organic matter, and (iii) underscore the importance of metal ions on humic structure in relation to sorption of hydrophobic organic compounds.  相似文献

An observational study was conducted at the watershed scale using land cover (vegetation) data to assess the absence or presence of riparian buffers in three northeastern Missouri watersheds. Forests and grasslands lying within a 61 m (200 ft) parallel band directly adjacent to streams were considered “buffers” for improving or protecting water quality and were characterized according to their length, width, and vegetation type. Results indicated that riparian buffers were abundant throughout the watersheds but were typically narrow along first‐order and second‐order streams; in many cases they may not have been wide enough to provide adequate stream protection. At least 90 percent of all streams had buffer vegetation immediately adjacent to the streambanks, but as few as 31 percent of first‐order streams had buffers extending to 61 m from the stream on at least one side. On‐site evaluations are needed to determine the condition of these forests and grasslands and their ability to process nonpoint source pollutants. The results will be useful for providing natural resource managers with knowledge of current watershed conditions as well as in identifying specific locations for future conservation efforts within each watershed.  相似文献

Recent evidence supports using visible-near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (VNIRS) for sensing soil quality; advantages include low-cost, nondestructive, rapid analysis that retains high analytical accuracy for numerous soil performance measures. Research has primarily targeted agricultural applications (precision agriculture, performance diagnostics), but implications for assessing ecological systems are equally significant. Our objective was to extend chemometrics for sensing soil quality to wetlands. Hydric soils posed two challenges. First, wetland soils exhibit a wider range of organic matter concentrations, particularly in riparian areas where levels range from <1% in sedimentation zones to >90% in backwater floodplains; this may mute spectral responses from other soil fractions. Second, spectral inference of cation concentrations in terrestrial soils is for oxidized species; under reducing conditions in wetlands, oxidation state variability is observed, which strongly affects chroma. Riparian soils (n = 273) from western Florida exhibiting substantial target parameter variability were compiled. After minimal pre-processing, soils were scanned under artificial illumination using a laboratory spectrometer. A multivariate data mining technique (regression trees) was used to relate post-processed reflectance spectra to laboratory observations (pH, organic content, cation concentrations, total N, C, and P, extracellular enzyme activity). High validation accuracy was generally observed (r2(validation) > 0.8, RPD > 2.0, where RPD is the ratio of the standard deviation of an attribute to the observed standard error of validation); where accuracy was lower, categorical models (classification trees) successfully screened samples based on diagnostic functional thresholds (validation odds ratio > 10). Graphical models verified significant association between predictions and observations for all parameters, conditioning on biogeochemical covariates. Visible-near infrared reflectance spectroscopy offers both cost and statistical power advantages; hydric conditions do not appear to constrain application.  相似文献

Responding to environmental, sustainability, business, and market factors, DuPont has commercialized a new polymer platform, Sorona®, based on 1,3-propanediol. The physical and chemical property advantages over other polymers are described. The diol component of this polymer, 1,3-propanediol, has been demonstrated to be manufacturable via biological (fermentation) process from corn sugar.
