This paper empirically shows how the uncertainty associated to the absence of a mitigation regime which follows the United
Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Kyoto Protocol (UN FCCC Kyoto Protocol) is affecting investments in abatement
activities in the EU electricity sector and, thus, future emissions levels. Based on a survey of EU electric utilities, it
identifies the most likely post-Kyoto scenarios considered by them and how they are coping with such uncertainty in their
investment decisions. It is found that firms react differently to such uncertainty and adopt different strategies to cope
with it, diversifying their emissions control activities. Although most companies foresee post-Kyoto compliance regimes with
emissions trading systems, they differ in their perceptions of the form that a post-Kyoto regime could take and are, thus,
positioning differently to face such regime. The particular features of each company and the country where they operate affect
their perception of the uncertainties, their position regarding a possible post-Kyoto regime and their inclination to carry
out mitigation activities. Complying with Kyoto (and, eventually, post-Kyoto) targets significantly influences the investment
decisions of European electricity companies. Uncertainty about a post-Kyoto regime may already be affecting investments in
mitigation activities in the electricity sector. Therefore, significant progress has to be made in the definition of a post-Kyoto
regime. It is urgent to define and agree internationally the emissions reduction objectives and the mitigation instruments
that will be accepted for compliance, ensuring continuity of the international emissions trading system foreseen in the Kyoto
Protocol.
Dioxins are highly toxic and ubiquitous compounds that are unintentional by-products of several chemical processes on earth. According to the earth pollutant terminology, they are next to the nuclear catastrophes. It is because of their concerns over adverse health effects, a number of countries have introduced stringent emission standards. The present review focuses on entire sources of dioxins present in the environment. They are broadly classified into four major categories such as, incineration, combustion, industrial and reservoir sources. State-of-the-art remediation technologies available for reducing dioxins formation and emission from the important sources such as, flue gas, fly ash and soil were described in detail. Further, in order to get a comprehensive perception about the dioxins subject, topics such as, dioxins transfer in the environment, their mode of action, toxicity equivalence factor, exposure and health risk assessment were highlighted in brief in the introduction. Thorium levels and their association with Fe, Sc, Ca, and Particulate Organic Carbon (POC) were researched in sediments of the Vigo Ria in order to assess the influence of radioactive gneisses from the neighbouring continental Gali?eiro Complex. Sediment of 50 surface samples and 1 core was analysed by ICP-MS and the results were validated with certificate reference material from marine sediment. It was found that Th accumulates in the middle Ria zone (9-15 mg kg(-1)) as a result of the terrestrial source. The thorium concentration in the Ria (average: 9.4+/-5.1 mg kg(-1)) is not anthropogenically impacted in accordance with its own regional background level (11.4+/-3.5 mg kg(-1)), which is two times higher than the content in earth's crust. Throughout the relationship Th/Fe, Th may be associated with the iron cycle in the Ria, probably through iron oxy-hydroxide scavenging. 相似文献
The vine mealybug (VM) females collected in Israel produce two sex pheromone compounds: lavandulyl senecioate (LS) and (S)-lavandulyl isovalerate (LI). The males display ambiguous behavior to LI: repulsion in the vineyard and attraction of laboratory-reared
males. We addressed the question of individual male behavior, i.e., do males respond to both LS and LI, or might they display
a distinct response to each of the two pheromone compounds. We compared male pherotype frequencies between wild-caught and
laboratory-reared populations. Then, we examined the relationship between pherotype composition and male capture rates in
pheromone traps. Finally, we addressed the heredity of the pherotypes. The Israeli VM populations contain nine different male
pherotypes, as defined according to the male behavior to pheromone compounds. The studied Portuguese populations included
five of the nine pherotypes; none of the Portuguese males were attracted to LI. It seems that the high frequency of males
that were attracted to LI is related to dense VM populations. It is hypothesized that selection for the male pherotypes, I
males, those that respond to LI, occur under high-density rearing conditions. This may result from shorter development times
of males and females that produce more I male pherotypes. The lower relative frequency of trapping of males in LI-baited traps
than expected from the percentage determined in a Petri dish arena suggests that males that respond solely to LS (S males)
are better fliers. The results also suggest that the pherotype trait is inherited by both sexes of the VM. 相似文献
When both parents provide offspring care, equal sharing of costly parental duties may enhance reproductive success. This is
crucial for longlived species, where increased parental effort in current reproduction profoundly affects future reproduction.
Indication of reproductive value or willingness to invest in reproduction may promote matching responses by mates, thus reducing
the conflict over care. In birds with biparental care, blue-green eggshell color may function as a signal of reproductive
value that affects parental effort, as predicted by the signaling hypothesis of blue-green eggshell coloration. However, this
hypothesis has not been explored during incubation, when the potential stimulus of egg color is present, and has been little
studied in longlived birds. We experimentally studied if egg color affected incubation patterns in the blue-footed booby,
a longlived species with biparental care and blue eggs. We exchanged fresh eggs between nests of the same laying date and
recorded parental incubation effort on the following 4 days. Although egg color did not affect male effort, original eggshell
color was correlated with pair matching in incubation. Exchanged eggshell color did not affect incubation patterns. This suggests
that biliverdin-based egg coloration reflects female quality features that are associated with pair incubation effort or that
blue-footed boobies mate assortatively high-quality pairs incubating more colorful clutches. An intriguing possibility is
that egg coloration facilitates an equal sharing of incubation, the signal being functional only during a short period close
to laying. Results also suggest that indication of reproductive value reduces the conflict over care. 相似文献

In addition to direct photolysis studies, in this work the second-order reaction rate constants of pesticides imidacloprid (IMD) and ametryn (AMT) with hydroxyl radicals (HO●), singlet oxygen (1O2), and triplet excited states of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (3CDOM*) were determined by kinetic competition under sunlight. IMD and AMT exhibited low photolysis quantum yields: (1.23?±?0.07)?×?10–2 and (7.99?±?1.61)?×?10–3 mol Einstein?1, respectively. In contrast, reactions with HO● radicals and 3CDOM* dominate their degradation, with 1O2 exhibiting rates three to five orders of magnitude lower. The values of kIMD,HO● and kAMT,HO● were (3.51?±?0.06)?×?109 and (4.97?±?0.37)?×?109 L mol?1 s?1, respectively, while different rate constants were obtained using anthraquinone-2-sulfonate (AQ2S) or 4-carboxybenzophenone (CBBP) as CDOM proxies. For IMD this difference was significant, with kIMD,3AQ2S*?=?(1.02?±?0.08)?×?109 L mol?1 s?1 and kIMD,3CBBP*?=?(3.17?±?0.14)?×?108 L mol?1 s?1; on the contrary, the values found for AMT are close, kAMT,3AQ2S*?=?(8.13?±?0.35)?×?108 L mol?1 s?1 and kAMT,3CBBP*?=?(7.75?±?0.80)?×?108 L mol?1 s?1. Based on these results, mathematical simulations performed with the APEX model for typical levels of water constituents (NO3?, NO2?, CO32?, TOC, pH) indicate that the half-lives of these pesticides should vary between 24.1 and 18.8 days in the waters of the Paranapanema River (São Paulo, Brazil), which can therefore be impacted by intensive agricultural activity in the region.

Global targets for the percentage area of land protected, such as 30% by 2030, have gained increasing prominence, but both their scientific basis and likely effectiveness have been questioned. As with emissions-reduction targets based on desired climate outcomes, percentage-protected targets combine values and science by estimating the area over which conservation actions are required to help achieve desired biodiversity outcomes. Protected areas are essential for achieving many biodiversity targets, in part because many species are highly sensitive to human-associated disturbance. However, because the contribution of protected areas to biodiversity outcomes is contingent on their location, management, governance, threats, and what occurs across the broader landscape matrix, global percentage-protected targets are unavoidably empirical generalizations of ecological patterns and processes across diverse geographies. Percentage-protected targets are insufficient in isolation but can complement other actions and contribute to biodiversity outcomes within a framework that balances accuracy and pragmatism in a global context characterized by imperfect biodiversity data. Ideally, percentage-protected targets serve as anchors that strengthen comprehensive national biodiversity strategies by communicating the level of ambition necessary to reverse current trends of biodiversity loss. If such targets are to fulfill this role within the complex societal process by which both values and science impel conservation actions, conservation scientists must clearly communicate the nature of the evidence base supporting percentage-protected targets and how protected areas can function within a broader landscape managed for sustainable coexistence between people and nature. A new paradigm for protected and conserved areas recognizes that national coordination, incentives, and monitoring should support rather than undermine diverse locally led conservation initiatives. However, the definition of a conserved area must retain a strong focus on biodiversity to remain consistent with the evidence base from which percentage-protected targets were originally derived. 相似文献
Very shallow lagoons that are a few centimeters deep are common in the arid Andes of Northern Chile, Argentina, Bolivia and Perú. The dynamics of these lagoons are dominated by the water–sediment interface (WSI) and strong afternoon winds. Although many studies have examined the diffusional mass transfer coefficients (kt) of open channel flows, estimates for wind-induced flows are still unknown. The aim of this article is to propose and validate an analytical expression for computing kt at the WSI for wind-induced flow. The laboratory measurements were conducted in a wind tunnel with a water tank of variable depth located at its downwind end. Natural muddy sediments were placed in the middle of the tank so that the dissolved oxygen (DO) was consumed in the sediments. The diffusional mass transfer coefficient that characterizes the DO uptake in the sediment was obtained from DO micro-profiles measured with an OX-25 Unisense microelectrode. Water velocity profiles were measured with a 2D side-view Sontek acoustic doppler velocimetry (ADV), and the wind shear velocity was computed based on wind velocity profiles that were measured with an Extech hot-wire anemometer. A total of 16 experiments were conducted with different water depths and wind shear stresses. The constants required by the model were determined from these experiments, and the analytical expression was successfully validated by the laboratory observations. The analytical expression obtained for computing kt was also validated with field observations that were conducted in October, 2012, in Salar del Huasco, Northern Chile (20.274° S, 68.883° W, 3800 m above sea level). The comparison between the observed and predicted values of kt provides a determination coefficient of r2 = 0.48 and a p value < 0.01. The results show that the value of kt for wind-induced flow is proportional to the wind shear velocity and the inverse of the Reynolds number of the wind-induced current. 相似文献
