The switch from hunting wild meat for home consumption to supplying more lucrative city markets in Amazonia can adversely affect some game species. Despite this, information on the amounts of wild meat eaten in Amazonian cities is still limited. We estimated wild meat consumption rates in 5 cities in the State of Amazonas in Brazil through 1046 door-to-door household interviews conducted from 2004 to 2012. With these data, we modeled the relationship between wild meat use and a selection of socioeconomic indices. We then scaled up our model to determine the amounts of wild meat likely to be consumed annually in the 62 urban centers in central Amazonia. A total of 80.3% of all interviewees reported consuming wild meat during an average of 29.3 (CI 11.6) days per year. Most wild meat was reported as bought in local markets (80.1%) or hunted by a family member (14.9%). Twenty-one taxa were cited as consumed, mostly mammals (71.6%), followed by reptiles (23.2%) and then birds (5.2%). The declared frequency of wild meat consumption was positively correlated with the proportion of rural population as well as with the per capita gross domestic product of the municipality (administrative divisions) where the cities were seated. We estimated that as much as 10,691 t of wild meat might be consumed annually in the 62 urban centers within central Amazonia, the equivalent of 6.49 kg per person per year. In monetary terms, this amounts to US$21.72 per person per year or US$35.1 million overall, the latter figure is comparable to fish and timber production in the region. Given this magnitude of wild meat trade in central Amazonia, it is fundamental to integrate this activity into the formal economy and actively develop policies that allow the trade of more resilient taxa and restrict trade in species sensitive to hunting. 相似文献

Summary. Sequestration of plant toxins in herbivores is often
correlated with aposematic coloration and gregarious behaviour. Larvae
of Pieris brassicae show these conspicuous morphological and behavioural
characteristics and were thus suggested to sequester glucosinolates that
are characteristic secondary metabolites of their host plants. P. rapaeare camouflaged and solitary, and are thus not expected to sequester. To
test this hypothesis and to check the repeatabi-lity of a study that did
report the presence of the glucosinolate sinigrin in P. brassicae,
larvae were reared on three species of Brassicaceae (Sinapis alba,
Brassica nigra and Barbarea stricta), and different leaf and insect
samples were taken for glucosinolate analysis. The major host plant
glucosinolates could only be found in traces or not at all in larval
haemolymph, bled or starved larvae, faeces or pupae of both species or
P. brassicae regurgitant. Haemolymph of both Pieris spp. was not
rejected by the ant Myrmica rubra in dual-choice assays; the regurgitant
of P. brassicae was rejected. This suggests the presence of compounds
other than glucosinolates that might be sequestered in or produced by P.
brassicae only. In faeces of both Pieris spp. a compound which yielded
4-hydroxybenzylcyanide (HBC) upon incubation with sulfatase was detected
in high concentrations when larvae had been reared on S. alba. This
compound may be derived from hydrolysis of sinalbin, the main
glucosinolate of that plant. The unidentified HBC progenitor was
apparently not sequestered in the two Pieris spp., and was not detected
in faeces of larvae reared on B. nigra or B. stricta.

In order to elucidate the evolutionary process of deep-sea Bathymodiolus mussels, we investigated the phylogenetic relationships of 16 species worldwide by analyzing nucleotide sequences of the mitochondrial COI and ND4 genes. Deep-sea mussels were clustered into three groups by basal trichotomous divergence. The first was composed of four species found in Japanese waters and one species from the Gulf of Mexico, which contain methanotrophic endosymbiotic bacteria. The second included nine species distributed in the West and East Pacific, Indian, and Atlantic Oceans. Members of the second group were trichotomously divided into the Indo-West Pacific, Atlantic, and East Pacific subclusters. The Indo-West Pacific subcluster was composed of three very closely related species with mutual genetic distances at the intraspecific level (av. 0.019 in COI and 0.009 in ND4 relative to av. 0.156 in COI and 0.265 in ND4 among Bathymodiolus species other than Cluster A species), suggesting some gene flow among these species. The third consisted of two West Pacific species. Species in the second and third groups contain mainly thioautotrophic endosymbionts, including some species harboring both methanotrophs and thioautotrophs. 相似文献

Carotenoid pigments have attracted much interest in behavioural and evolutionary ecology because of their dual function in immune physiology and as color signals. In vertebrates, carotenoids must ultimately be obtained from the diet, and the mechanisms and magnitude of this environmental dependence are central for understanding carotenoid signal functions and evolution. In the present cross-fostering experiment with great tits Parus major, we investigate pre- and postnatal parental effects (egg yolk carotenoids, parental coloration) on nestling size and carotenoid coloration, using HPLC analysis of egg yolk carotenoids, and a reflectance-based measure of ‘chroma’ that reflects the plumage pigment concentration. Both rearing environment and origin influenced offspring size and plumage chroma. Maternal allocation of carotenoids to eggs had a weak positive effect on nestling plumage chroma, whereas we found no prenatal maternal effects (egg size or yolk carotenoid concentration) on size. Nestling plumage chroma was also significantly predicted by the chroma of the rearing father, but not by the color of the rearing mother or either of the original (genetical) parents. Thus, both prenatal maternal effects and postnatal paternal effects influence the carotenoid-based plumage coloration of nestling great tits. Future studies will reveal if parental effects have long-term consequences for plumage development and associated fitness components. 相似文献

In two years of sampling, 10 287 fishes belonging to 62 species (39 families) were collected from mangroves and seagrasses of the Negombo Estuary. Of the species collected, 70% were marine, 27% estuarine and 3% freshwater. Aplocheilus melastigma, Ambassis dayi, Etroplus suratensis, E. maculatus, Bathygobius fuscus and Arothron immaculatus constituted 90% of the catch. Sixteen species were caught only from mangroves, 6 only from seagrasses, and 40 from both. The number of species, individuals, biomass and diversity were higher in seagrasses than in mangroves. Gobies and some siganids moved to the mangrove habitat as they grew, but cichlids, triacanthids, some eleotrids and tetraodontids preferred seagrasses. The number of species and individuals caught increased at the beginning of the north-east monsoon when the rainfall was low. The number of species and individual numbers were positively correlated with salinity and dissolved oxygen and negatively correlated with water temperature. Of the 33 species examined, seagrasses formed >25% of the gut content in juvenile Lates calcarifer, Apogon thermalis, E. suratensis, E. maculatus, Siganus javus, Butis butis and Bathygobius fuscus. Mangrove litter was the main gut content of the family Syngnathidae. E. suratensis, E. maculatus and S. javus from seagrasses contained more filamentous algae than seagrasses in their stomachs. S. javus collected from mangroves also contained more seagrasses in their stomachs than mangrove litter, indicating that the association of juvenile fishes with mangroves or seagrasses may not be obligate in estuaries subject to low tidal fluctuations. 相似文献

Honeybees, Apis spp., maintain elevated temperatures inside their nests to accelerate brood development and to facilitate defense against predators.
We present an additional defensive function of elevating nest temperature: honeybees generate a brood-comb fever in response
to colonial infection by the heat-sensitive pathogen Ascosphaera apis. This response occurs before larvae are killed, suggesting that either honeybee workers detect the infection before symptoms
are visible, or that larvae communicate the ingestion of the pathogen. This response is a striking example of convergent evolution
between this "superorganism" and other fever-producing animals.

The monitoring of river phytoplankton and several hydrological, physical and chemical variables, in combination with bioassays using Selenastrum capricornutum Printz, allowed the characterisation of three distinct reaches of the Lower River Luján. The upstream stretch, characterised by the lowest depth and discharge, registered the highest nutrient, dissolved heavy metal and chlorophyll a concentrations in accordance with low phytoplankton diversity and the occurrence of several species typical of organically polluted lowland rivers. A downstream improvement, concomitant to increasing river discharge, is revealed by a progressive decrease of organic pollution parameters even though algal toxicity is registered through bioassays. The water input from the Parana River through the G. Arias Channel plays an important role in the regulation of the limnology of the Lower Luján River. As a result of marked increasing discharge, depth and width, there is a decrease in nutrient concentration and phytoplankton density and an increase in dissolved oxygen concentration. We have observed the effect of copper and zinc on the biology of Euglena gracilis. The cells displayed different sensitivities to these metals, as the apparent LC50 for Cu2+ was 0.22 mM, and for Zn2+ it was 0.88 mM. While Zn2+ was able to increase cell proliferation even at 0.1 mM, the minimal CuCl2 concentration tested (0.02 mM) was sufficient to impair cell division. Higher concentrations of these metals not only inhibited cell division in a concentration-dependent manner, but also interfered with the metabolism of E. gracilis. A higher accumulation of proteins and lipids per cell was observed at the DI50 concentration for metal-treated cells. These results suggest that the test concentration of both metals leads to a failure in completing cell division. Ultrastructural analysis indicated a chloroplast disorganization in copper-treated cells, as well as the presence of electron dense granules with different shapes and sizes inside vacuoles. Microanalysis of these granules indicated an accumulation of copper, thus suggesting a detoxification role played by the vacuoles. These results indicate that E. gracilis is an efficient biological model for the study of metal poisoning in eukaryotic cells. They also indicate that copper and zinc (copper being more poisonous) had an overall toxic effect on E. gracilis and that part of the effect can be ascribed to defects in the structure of chloroplast membranes. 相似文献
