ABSTRACT

A study was conducted to estimate the changes in wintertime visual air quality in Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) that might occur due to proposed reductions in SO2 emissions at two steam electric generating plants in eastern Texas, each over 100 km from the city. To provide information for designing subsequent investigations, the haze was characterized broadly during the first year of the study. Meteorological data acquired then demonstrated that, during haze episodes, emissions from only one of the two plants were likely to be transported directly to DFW. Therefore, the second year of the study was centered on just one of the power plants. Air quality was then characterized within the urban area and at rural locations that would be upwind and downwind of the plant during transport to DFW. An instrumented aircraft measured plume dispersion and the air surrounding the plume on selected days. A mathematical model was used to predict the change that would occur in airborne particulate matter concentrations in DFW if SO2 emissions were reduced to reflect the proposed limitations. The contribution of particles in the atmosphere to light extinction was estimated, and simulated photographs were produced to illustrate the visibility changes. The study concluded that the proposed emission reductions would, at most, subtly change perceived wintertime visibility.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

During wintertime, haze episodes occur in the Dallas-Ft. Worth (DFW) urban area. Such episodes are characterized by substantial light scattering by particles and relatively low absorption, leading to so-called “white haze.” The objective of this work was to assess whether reductions in the emissions of SO2 from specific coal-fired power plants located over 100 km from DFW could lead to a discernible change in the DFW white haze. To that end, the transport, dispersion, deposition, and chemistry of the plume of a major power plant were simulated using a reactive plume model (ROME). The realism of the plume model simulations was tested by comparing model calculations of plume concentrations with aircraft data of SF6 tracer concentrations and ozone concentrations. A second-order closure dispersion algorithm was shown to perform better than a first-order closure algorithm and the empirical Pasquill-Gifford-Turner algorithm. For plume impact assessment, three actual scenarios were simulated, two with clear-sky conditions and one with the presence of fog prior to the haze. The largest amount of sulfate formation was obtained for the fog episode. Therefore, a hypothetical scenario was constructed using the meteorological conditions of the fog episode with input data values adjusted to be more conducive to sulfate formation. The results of the simulations suggest that reductions in the power plant emissions lead to less than proportional reductions in sulfate concentrations in DFW for the fog scenario. Calculations of the associated effects on light scattering using Mie theory suggest that reduction in total (plume + ambient) light extinction of less than 13% would be obtained with a 44% reduction in emissions of SO2 from the modeled power plant.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In 1996, Schwartz, Dockery, and Neas1 reported that daily mortality was more strongly associated with concentrations of PM2.5 than with concentrations of larger particles (coarse mass [CM]) in six U.S. cities (“original paper'V'original analyses”). Because of the public policy implications of the findings and the uniqueness of the concentration data, we undertook a reanalysis of these results. This paper presents results of the reconstruction of these data and replication of the original analyses using the reconstructed data. The original investigators provided particulate air pollution data for this paper. Daily weather and daily counts of total and cause-specific deaths were reconstructed from original public records. The reconstructed particulate air pollution and weather data were consistent with the summaries presented in the original paper. Daily counts of deaths in the reconstructed data set were lower than in the original paper because of restrictions on residence and place of death. The reconstruction process identified an administrative change in county codes that led to higher numbers of deaths in St. Louis. Despite these differences in daily counts of deaths, the estimated effects of par-ticulate air pollution from the reconstructed dataset, using analytic methods as described in the original paper, produced combined effect estimates essentially equivalent to the originally published results. For example, the estimated association of a 10 |j.g/m3 increase in 2-day mean particulate air pollution on total mortality was 1.3% (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.9-1.7%, t = 6.53) for PM25 based on the reconstructed dataset, compared to the originally reported association of 1.5% (95% CI 1.1-1.9%, t = 7.41). For coarse particles, the estimated association from the reconstructed dataset was 0.4% (95% CI -0.2-0.9%, t = 1.43) compared to the originally reported association of 0.4% (95% CI -0.1-1.0%, t = 1.48). These results from the reconstructed data suggest that the original results reported by Schwartz, Dockery, and Neas1 were essentially replicated.  相似文献

The following report discusses current bench- and pilot-plant advances in preparation of ADVAnced siliCATE (ADVACATE) calcium silicate sorbents for flue gas desulfurization. It also discusses current bench- and pilot-plant advances in sorbent preparation. Fly ash was ground in a laboratory scale grinder prior to slurring in order to decrease the slurring time needed for the sorbent to be reactive with SO2. Reactivity of ADVACATE sorbents with SO2 in the bench-scale reactor correlated with their surface area.

ADVACATE sorbents produced with ground fly ash were evaluated in the 50 cfm (85 m3/h) pilot plant providing 2 s duct residence time. ADVACATE sorbent was produced by slurrying ground fly ash (median particle size of 4.3 µm) with Ca(OH)2 at the weight ratio of 3:1 at 90°C (194°F) for 3hto yield solids with 30 weight percent of initial free moisture. When this sorbent was injected into the duct with 1500 ppm SO2 and at 11°C (20°F) approach to saturation, the measured SO2 removal was approximately 60percent at a Ca/S stoichiometric ratio of 2. Previously, when ADVACATE sorbent was produced at 90°C (194°F) and at the same fly-ash-to-Ca(OH)2 weight ratio using unground fly ash, removal under the same conditions in the duct was approximately 50 percent following 12 h slurring. The report presents the results of pilot-scale recycle tests at the recycle ratio of 2. Finally, the report discusses future U.S. Environmental Protection Agency plans for commercialization of ADVACATE.  相似文献

The 1991 SO2 Control Symposium was held December 3-6, 1991, in Washington, D.C. The symposium, jointly sponsored by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), focused attention on recent improvements in conventional sulfur dioxide (SO2) control technologies, emerging processes, and strategies for complying with the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990. Its purpose was to provide a forum for the exchange of technical and regulatory information on SO2 control technology. Over 800 representatives of 20 countries from government, academia, flue gas desulfurization (FGD) process suppliers, equipment manufacturers, engineering firms, and utilities attended. In all, 50 U.S. utilities and 10 utilities in other countries were represented. In 11 technical sessions, a diverse group of speakers presented 111 technical papers on development, operation, and commercialization of wet and dry FGD, Clean Coal Technologies, and combined sulfur dioxide/nitrogen oxides (SO2/NOx processes.  相似文献

The General Motors Research Laboratories and the Sloan-Kettering Institue for Cancer Research are collaborating to determine the contribution by automotive vehicles to the polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons in city air. Sampling of particulate matter at the rate of 140 M3/min (5000 cfm) was carried out at two heavily-trafficked sites in Detroit and one suburban site in Warren, Michigan. Carbon monoxide was determined continuously, and particulate matter was analyzed for “tar,” polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, lead, vanadium, and sulfates. Polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons in automobile exhaust gas are assumed to be dispersed in air along with carbon monoxide or lead from automobiles. It is further assumed that automobiles are the sole source of carbon monoxide and lead in the atmosphere. Concentrations of carbon monoxide and lead in exhaust gas and in the air are utilized to estimate the percentage of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons in the air attributable to automobiles. The mean automobile contributions to benzo(a)pyrene in the air, based on lead concentrations, were 18% at a Freeway Interchange, 5% in a downtown commercial area, and 42% in suburban Warren. The average concentrations of benzo(a)pyrene at the sites were 6 μg/103 M3, 7 μg/103 M3 and 1 μg/103 M3, respectively. Mean contributions based on carbon monoxide concentrations were approximately twice the levels based on lead concentrations. Benzo(a)pyrene and benz(a)anthracene in air were not statistically related to carbon monoxide or lead in air, but were higher in winter than in summer, probably because of the higher levels of these materials emitted in space heating combustion in winter.  相似文献

There is a growing interest in effects of sub-micron, nonsettling particles in the atmosphere among air pollution control agencies throughout the country. This type of pollution, generally referred to as the “soiling index” of the atmosphere, is produced primarily by the incomplete combustion of fuels. The measurement procedure has been fairly well standardized, the values being reported as Cohs or Ruds per 1000 linear feet of air. Using a similar technique, a method of quantitating smoke emission in objective terms first demonstrated by W. C. L. Hemeon in 1953, has been applied to source testing at several operating plants by the Cincinnati Division of Air Pollution Control. The source strength will be called “soiling potential” while the effect in the general atmosphere is termed “soiling index.” The soiling potential unit is Rud-ft2 per cubic foot exhaust gases or Rud-ft2 per unit of fuel input. The “Soiling Potential” sampler is described and results of tests are given. Included is the use of soiling potential in quantitating smoke emission from single sources and for constructing area wide inventory of smoke emission. The use of an area wide smoke emission inventory in Rudft2 in a simple diffusion model for calculating the soiling index (Rud-ft2/1000 cu ft) in the general atmosphere at a given point is explored.  相似文献

Air quality was comprehensively evaluated by means of sampling at 21 locations over metropolitan Birmingham during a period of one year. Thousands of integrated samples of three common atmospheric gaseous pollutants and two common particulate pollutants were collected and analyzed. Following the year of sampling in 1964, a random household survey was completed by conducting personal interviews at more than 7200 households over metropolitan Birmingham. Statistical reduction of household survey results by census tract and by neighborhood area provided domestic fuel and waste burning emission data as well as public (resident) opinion on specific air pollution effects. The relationship between ambient air quality and neighborhood opinion of air pollution effects on health and property are evaluated statistically. Ambient standards are suggested which are based upon those air pollution levels shown to have adverse effects on approximately one-third of the people.  相似文献

Conservation planners are called upon to make choices and trade-offs about the preservation of natural areas for the protection of species in the face of development pressures. We addressed the problem of selecting sites for protection over time with the objective of maximizing species representation, with uncertainty about future site development, and with periodic constraints on the number of sites that can be selected. We developed a 0–1, linear optimization model with 2 periods to select the sites that maximize expected species coverage subject to budget constraints. The model is based on the idea that development uncertainty can be characterized by a set of scenarios, each of which is a possible second-period development outcome for the set of sites. We also suggest that our 2-period model can be used in a sequential fashion that is consistent with adaptive planning. Results are presented for the Fox River watershed in Chicago.  相似文献
