Mutagenic activity in diesel emission particulate extracts was detected by the Salmonella typhimurium/microsome assay. Direct-acting mutagens as well as promutagens requiring metabolic activation were detected. The extracts were fractionated into acidic, basic, and neutral fractions, and the neutral fraction was chromatographed into seven subfractions. Differences in the mutagenic potency of these fractions and subfractions were determined by the Salmonella assay. Fractions containing as yet unidentified compounds, but not polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, were found to make a major contribution to mutagenic activity of the extracts. 相似文献

The way the Water Resources Council proposes to measure the beneficial effects of national economic development and recreation is questioned and alternatives suggested. In measuring the former, the assumptions specified by the Council are questioned because they do not hold true in the market place. In addition, the Council's method of simulating a price per recreation day implies that an arbitrary price be selected from a range and multiplied times the number of days at no charge for use of the facilities. Per vehicle crash involvement rates were compared for otherwise identical vehicle models with and without electronic stability control (ESC) systems. ESC was found to affect single-vehicle crashes to a greater extent than multiple-vehicle crashes, and crashes with fatal injuries to a greater extent than less severe crashes. Based on all police-reported crashes in 7 states over 2 years, ESC reduced single-vehicle crash involvement risk by approximately 41 percent (95 percent confidence limits 3348) and single-vehicle injury crash involvement risk by 41 percent (2752). This translates to an estimated 7 percent reduction in overall crash involvement risk (310) and a 9 percent reduction in overall injury crash involvement risk (314). Based on all fatal crashes in the United States over 3 years, ESC was found to have reduced single-vehicle fatal crash involvement risk by 56 percent (3968). Measurements of 8-hour time-weighted average NO(2) concentrations are reported at 7 different locations in the region of Dunkirk over 5 consecutive days using PiezOptic monitoring badges previously calibrated for the range 0-70 ppb together with data from chemiluminescent analysers in 5 sites (4 fixed and one mobile). The latter facilities also provided data on ozone and NO concentrations and meteorological conditions. Daily averages from the two pairs of badges in different types of sampling cover in each site have been compared with data from the chemiluminescent analysers, and found largely to agree within error margins of +/-30%.
