Increased participation in resource management decisions by a wide range of stakeholders has been widely advocated, and has recently been formally incorporated into the European Water Framework Directive. However, achieving such participation has generally proved to be problematical. In response to locally perceived needs, a project was set up in the Ythan catchment in northeast Scotland, to undertake catchment management actions with increased public involvement. This paper outlines the methods used to increase public participation in such actions, and some preliminary assessments of the effectiveness of these. The experience of the project and the lessons learnt, including some of the difficulties of ensuring fully representative stakeholder involvement, are discussed in relation to published criteria for public participation in resource management. 相似文献

Concentrations of organic contaminants in common productive soils based on the total soil mass give a misleading account of actual contamination effects. This is attributed to the fact that productive soils are essentially water-saturated, with the result that the soil uptake of organic compounds occurs principally by partition into the soil organic matter (SOM). This report illustrates that the soil contamination intensity of a compound is governed by the concentration in the SOM (Com) rather than by the concentration in whole soil (Cs). Supporting data consist of the measured levels and toxicities of many pesticides in soils of widely differing SOM contents and the related levels in in-situ crops that defy explanation by the Cs values. This SOM-based index is timely needed for evaluating the contamination effects of food crops grown in different soils and for establishing a dependable priority ranking for intended remediation of numerous contamination sites. 相似文献

ABSTRACT Acidic aerosol concentrations measured by an annular denuder system (ADS) and a honeycomb denuder system (HDS) in Hsinchu, Taiwan, were compared. Aerosols were also sampled by a MOUDI (micro-orifice uniform deposit impactor) and analyzed by an ion chromatograph to determine the size distributions of different species. Using the measured aerosol size distribution, theoretical analysis showed that positive HNO3 artifact due to volatiliza-tion of NH4NO3 is generally negligible for both samplers.4 3Comparing two different denuder samplers, the average concentration of HNO3 measured by the ADS was found3to be lower than that measured by the HDS, while the difference between the two samplers for the average concentration of other species was found to be within ±15%. A possible cause of the difference in HNO3 con-3centrations is due to a greater loss of HNO3 in the cyclone3 used by the ADS than in the impactor used by the HDS. The study also showed incomplete absorption of the evaporated HCl and HNO3 from the particles on the Teflon3filter by the first nylon filter in the filter pack of the ADS. Collection efficiency and capacity of HCl and HNO3 by3the nylon filters need further investigation. 相似文献

In this study, sewage sludge ash (SSA), with similar characteristics to expansive clay, was used as the principal material and sewage sludge (SS) as the admixture to sinter lightweight aggregate and to study the influences of raw material composition on pelletising, sintering effect and aggregate properties. Results showed that both SS and SSA could be sintered to produce synthetic aggregates individually or mixed. Increasing the amount of SS would decrease the pelletising ratio. Under the consideration of energy saving, the mixture of SSA was better for sintering normal weight aggregate. On the contrary, the mixture that added 20-30% of SS was more adequate to make lightweight aggregates. Adding SS would enhance the oxidation-reduction reaction and lower the bulk density and sintering temperature of aggregates to save energy. Sintering temperature affected the properties of sewage sludge ash lightweight aggregate (SSALA) more than retention period did. Prolonging the retention period could improve bloating effect. 相似文献

To access the influence of a vegetation on soil microorganisms toward organic pollutant biogegration, this study examined the rhizospheric effects of four plant species (sudan grass, white clover, alfalfa, and fescue) on the soil microbial community and in-situ pyrene (PYR) biodegradation. The results indicated that the spiked PYR levels in soils decreased substantially compared to the control soil without planting. With equal planted densities, the efficiencies of PYR degradation in rhizosphere with sudan grass, white clover, alfalfa and fescue were 34.0%, 28.4%, 27.7%, and 9.9%, respectively. However, on the basis of equal root biomass the efficiencies were in order of white clover >> alfalfa > sudan > fescue. The increased PYR biodegradation was attributed to the enhanced bacterial population and activity induced by plant roots in the rhizosphere. Soil microbial species and biomasses were elucidated in terms of microbial phospholipid ester-linked fatty acid (PLFA) biomarkers. The principal component analysis (PCA) revealed significant changes in PLFA pattern in planted and non-planted soils spiked with PYR. Total PLFAs in planted soils were all higher than those in non-planted soils. PLFA assemblages indicated that bacteria were the primary PYR degrading microorganisms, and that Gram-positive bacteria exhibited higher tolerance to PYR than Gram-negative bacteria did. 相似文献

Sisal fibers bleached with sodium-hydroxide followed by hydrogen peroxide treatment were incorporated in a thermoplastic starch/ε-polycaprolactone (TPS/PCL) blend via extrusion processing. These samples with smooth and homogenous surfaces were examined for their property, biodegradability and water absorption. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that the fibers were well dispersed in the matrix. In addition, it was found that the fibers and matrices interacted strongly. Blends with 20 % (dry weight-basis) fiber content showed some fiber agglomeration. Whereas blends with 10 % fibers showed increased crystallinity and lower water absorption capacity. The CO2 evolution study showed that the thermoplastic starch samples without any additives had the highest rate and extent of degradation whereas the neat PCL samples had the lowest degradation rate. Addition of fiber to the TPS/PCL blend exhibited the degradation rates and extents that were somewhere in between the pure TPS and neat PCL. This work demonstrates that TPS/PCL composites reinforced with bleached sisal has superior structural characteristics and water resistance and thus, can be used as polymeric engineering composites for different applications. 相似文献

Air pollutant emission is one of the predominant factors affecting urban air quality such as ground-level ozone formation. This paper assesses the impact of changing emission inventory scenarios, based on combinations of point, mobile, area/non-road and biogenic sources, on the tropospheric ozone concentration in two southeast Texas urban areas, i.e. Houston-Galveston and Beaumont-Port Arthur, during the rapid ozone formation event (ROFE) on August 25, 2000. The EPA's Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) modeling system with 1999 national emission inventory (NEI99) estimates and updated SAPRC99 chemical mechanism are used in the sensitivity analysis for twelve different emission scenarios. Based on model results, it is found that the point source emission of NOx and VOC contributes the greatest ozone peak in the ROFE. Removing Texas point sources of VOC and NOx emission from the inventory results in a reduction in peak O3 concentration by 128 and 70 ppbv in Houston urban area, respectively. Similar but less drastic impact from point source is also observed in the Beaumont-Port Arthur area. The effect on peak ozone concentration due to mobile, area and non-road sources emissions are less significant compared to that of point source emission. Reducing VOC emission appears to be more effective than reducing NOx emission in lowering peak O3 concentration in the studied region. Although biogenic emission can contribute up to 37 ppbv of peak ozone level over a large area, the affected area is away from the urban region of concern, and should not be the main cause for O3 non-attainment in the two urban areas. Removing CO emission from mobile sources does not lead to significant reduction (< 1 ppbv) in ozone concentrations. The modeled data also show that the transport of O3 precursors from adjacent states can cause a significant ozone plume near Beaumont due to its proximity to the state border based on the conditions during the August 25, 2000 O3 episode. 相似文献

Speciated samples of PM2.5 were collected at the Big Bend site from July of 2003 to June 2006 and the McDonald Observatory site from July of 2003 to August of 2005 in southwestern Texas, respectively, by the US Environmental Protection Agency. A total of 175 samples for the Big Bend site and 105 samples for the McDonald Observatory site with 52 species were measured; however, 30 and 32 species from the Big Bend and McDonald Observatory sites, respectively, were excluded because of too much below-detection-limit data. Due to the laboratory change about November 1 of 2004 and possible analytical artifacts, phosphorous was excluded as well. Among the species excluded, 31 species are common to both sites. The two data sets were analyzed by positive matrix factorization to infer the sources of PM observed at the two sites. The analysis resolved five source-related factors for Big Bend and four for McDonald Observatory. Sulfate-rich secondary aerosol, coal burning, motor vehicle/road dust, and a mixed factor were identified as common sources to both sites. The other factor identified for Big Bend is related to soil. Sulfate mainly exists as ammonium salts. The sulfate-rich secondary aerosols account for about 62% and 66% of the PM2.5 mass concentration at the two sites, respectively. The highest concentration of Si associated with Ca, Fe, textSO42 - {text{SO}}_4^{2 - } , and organic carbon at the two sites was possibly attributed to the coal-fired power plants in the region. Basically, the factor of sulfate and coal burning at the two sites showed similar chemical composition profiles and seasonal variation that reflect the regional characteristics of these sources. The regional factors of sulfate, coal burning, and soil showed predominantly low-frequency variations; however, the area-related and/or local factors showed both high and low frequency variations. The motor vehicle/road dust and the mixed factors were likely to be area-related and/or local source. 相似文献

Speciated samples of PM2.5 were collected at a site in Jefferson County, Texas by US EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) from July of 2003 to August
of 2005. A total of 269 samples with 52 species were measured; however, 22 species were excluded in this study because of
too many below-detection-limit data. The data set was analyzed by positive matrix factorization (PMF) to infer the sources
of PM observed at the site. The analysis identified ten sources: sulfate-rich secondary aerosol I (35.9%), sulfate-rich secondary
aerosol II (21.0%), cement/carbon-rich (11.7%), wood smoke (8.8%), metal processing (6.3%), motor vehicle/road dust (5.7%),
nitrate-rich secondary aerosol (3.3%), soil (3.2%), sea salt (2.6%), and chloride depleted marine aerosol (1.6%). Sulfate
and nitrate mainly exist as salts. The two sulfate-rich secondary aerosols account for almost 57% of the PM2.5 mass concentration. The factor containing highest concentrations of Cl and Na was attributed to sea salt due to the proximity
of the monitoring site to the Gulf of Mexico. The chloride depleted marine aerosol was related to the sea salt aerosol. Cement/carbon-rich,
wood smoke, metal processing, and motor vehicle/road dust factor were likely to be the local sources. 相似文献
