Wildfires commonly result in an increase in stream turbidity. However, the influence of pre-fire land-use practices on post-fire stream turbidity is not well understood. The Lower Cotter Catchment (LCC) in south-eastern Australia is part of the main water supply catchment for Canberra with land in the catchment historically managed for a mix of conservation (native eucalypt forest) and pine (Pinus radiata) plantation. In January 2003, wildfires burned almost all of the native and pine forests in the LCC. A study was established in 2005 to determine stream post-fire turbidity recovery within the native and pine forest areas of the catchment. Turbidity data loggers were deployed in two creeks within burned native forest and burned pine forest areas to determine turbidity response to fire in these areas. As a part of the study, we also determined changes in bare soil in the native and pine forest areas since the fire. The results suggest that the time, it takes turbidity levels to decrease following wildfire, is dependent upon the preceding land-use. In the LCC, turbidity levels decreased more rapidly in areas previously with native vegetation compared to areas which were previously used for pine forestry. This is likely because of a higher percentage of bare soil areas for a longer period of time in the ex-pine forest estate and instream stores of fine sediment from catchment erosion during post-fire storm events. The results of our study show that the previous land-use may exert considerable control over on-going turbidity levels following a wildfire.  相似文献

Distribution of hexabromocyclododecane in Detroit River suspended sediments   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The distribution of hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) isomers (alpha, beta and gamma) was determined in Detroit River suspended sediments using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS). Individual isomers of HBCD were measured at concentrations ranging from <0.025 to 1.9 ng/g (dry wt.) for the alpha-isomer, <0.025 to 0.28 ng/g for the beta-isomer, and <0.025 to 2.3 ng/g for the gamma-isomer. Concentrations of total HBCD ranged from <0.075 to 3.7 ng/g. Roughly two-thirds of HBCD profiles in suspended sediments were dominated by the gamma-isomer, and were similar to profiles of commercial technical mixtures. Profiles in the remaining samples were dominated by the alpha-isomer. The beta-isomer was consistently detected at substantially lower levels than the other isomers; this isomer is a minor constituent in the commercial technical mixtures. Seasonal sampling showed significant shifts in the relative ratios of the HBCD isomers. The spatial distribution of HBCD in the Detroit River was similar to other persistent organic pollutants (e.g., PCBs), and showed a strong association with urban/industrial activities in the watershed. However, the highest HBCD concentrations (2.6-3.7 ng/g) were associated with areas of contemporary industrial activity, and were much lower than maximum concentrations of PCBs (2.2 microg/g) found in areas of the Detroit River associated with historical industrial activity.  相似文献

A number of pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) have been detected in the aquatic environment as a result of discharges of municipal wastewater. In the state of Louisiana, USA, many municipalities treat wastewater using natural systems, such as lagoons and wetlands, rather than conventional wastewater treatment technologies. Nearly all research to date has focused on the fate of PhACs in conventional treatment plants, not constructed and natural wetlands. In the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) for Mandeville, Louisiana, USA, wastewater flows of 7600 m3 d−1 are treated in a series of aeration lagoons (basins), followed by a constructed wetland and UV disinfection, before being discharged into a natural forested wetland (i.e. Bayou Chinchuba) and eventually, Lake Pontchartrain. Thirteen out of the 15 PhACs investigated were detected in the wastewater inflow to the treatment plant. Only 9 of the 13 compounds were above the detection limits at the treatment plant effluent. The concentrations of most compounds were reduced by greater than 90% within the plant, while carbamazepine and sotalol were only reduced by 51% and 82%, respectively. The percent reductions observed in the Mandeville system were greater than reduction rates reported for conventional WWTPs; perhaps due to the longer treatment time (30 days). Most target PhACs were not completely removed before discharge into Lake Pontchartrain, although their collective annual loading was reduced to less than 1 kg and down to ppb with significant potential for dilution in the large lake.  相似文献

<正>Nanoparticles(NPs)from anthropogenic sources have applications in several commercial products, including cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and materials. There is evidence that during their usage and disposal, engineered nanoparticles can and will be released into wastewater(Gottschalk et al.,2013;Pasricha et al.,2012;Westerhoff et al.,2013;Zheng et al.,2015).If water and wastewater treatment plants are inefficient or incapable of removing NPs from water,NPs will be released with the treated effluent, entering drinking water sources and natural aquatic environments, increasing exposure for plants, microorganisms,  相似文献

This article presents the results of an Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP) demonstration conducted at Horsham Air Guard Station and the former Willow Grove Naval Reserve Station in Horsham, Pennsylvania. The ESTCP project information can be found here: https://www.serdp-estcp.org/projects/details/568c0487-f182-40c1-9d4d-9297f4bbedda/er19-5181-projcet-overview . The technology demonstrated, identified as the AquaPRS™ system, employs a carbon-based micro-adsorbent suspension to adsorb polyfluoroalkylated substance (PFAS), which is subsequently filtered using a ceramic membrane filter. A prototypical AquaPRS system was specifically designed and implemented to treat per- and PFAS-contaminated water resources at a fidelity level that could be replicated at other US Department of Defense sites. The objective of the project was to demonstrate and validate the application of the adsorption and separation treatment approach to reduce the total life-cycle cost of treating PFAS-impacted groundwater. The results of the demonstration showed that the AquaPRS technology provides an alternative to granular activated carbon (GAC) and ion exchange (IX) systems based on treatment efficacy and cost performance using lifecycle cost analyses. Pretreatment included cloth media filtration with a nominal 5 µm particulate rejection rating to remove sediment from the surface water treated during the Horsham evaluation. Prefiltration was not necessary for treating the Willow Grove groundwater due to the lower raw turbidities. The micro-adsorbent was added to the system to maintain a suspension between 1 and 50 g/L in the sorbent chamber at reaction times from 5 to 20 min. Treated effluent was separated from the sorbent slurry matrix using the ceramic membrane filter, with the slurry returned to the sorption reactor. The first study conducted at Horsham Air Guard Station demonstrated and validated the AquaPRS treatment approach using a mobile pilot system, while the second study (conducted at the former Naval Reserve Air Station at Willow Grove) provided further optimization of cost, performance, and scalability. At Horsham, 13 tests were conducted over 9 months using a dual-train pilot with each test evaluating two separate conditions. The first 10 tests were conducted with treatment systems in parallel and the remaining three were conducted in series. At Willow Grove, five tests were conducted over a 6-month period for a total of 10 individual test conditions. Three tests were performed in parallel with two operated in series. Tests conducted at Horsham evaluated the performance of the AquaPRS system at different hydraulic detention times (5–120 min), sorbent mass (10–430 g), sorbent densities (0.5–40 g/L), and flowrates (0.1–1 L/min). At Willow Grove, the range of these parameters was further narrowed with hydraulic detention times from 10 to 20 min, sorbent mass from 100 to 200 g, sorbent density from 10 to 25 g/L, and flowrate from 0.67 to 1 L/min. AquaPRS was validated by quantifying the specific adsorption rate (SAR) of various PFASs on the micro-adsorbent and comparing it to values derived for GAC and IX from the same water matrix. The costs of the three treatment systems were compared to estimate a payback period for the AquaPRS system compared to GAC and IX. At 10% breakthrough, the SAR of AquaPRS for the combined concentration of the United States Environmental Protection Agency's Third Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule (UCMR3) PFASs was nearly 300 times higher compared to those treated with GAC. At 40 ng/L breakthrough for combined UCMR3 compounds, a single-stage AquaPRS system at Horsham achieved 146 µg PFAS/g sorbent SAR, while a dual-stage system at Willow Grove achieved 2128 µg PFAS/g sorbent. The AquaPRS system showed a breakeven period of 8 months compared to a similarly designed GAC system in the Horsham evaluation using the observed adsorption rates. In the Willow Grove test case, a 24–36-month breakeven period was determined for the AquaPRS technology when compared to the highest sorption rates observed among five previously tested IX resins. The AquaPRS benefits in comparison to GAC/IX include effective performance in the presence of co-contaminants, adaptability to changing conditions, limited downtime for sorbent replacement, resistance to biofouling, small footprint, and reduced disposal requirements. The lower waste production rates are due to the AquaPRS' ability to dewater the spent sorbent resulting in a waste generation of just 0.002% of the total volume of water treated. Based on the treatment efficacy and cost performance, the AquaPRS system is positioned as an alternative to GAC and IX systems.  相似文献

Parasite success typically depends on a close relationship with one or more hosts; therefore, attributes of parasitic infection have the potential to provide indirect details of host natural history and are biologically relevant to animal conservation. Characterization of parasite infections has been useful in delineating host populations and has served as a proxy for assessment of environmental quality. In other cases, the utility of parasites is just being explored, for example, as indicators of host connectivity. Innovative studies of parasite biology can provide information to manage major conservation threats by using parasite assemblage, prevalence, or genetic data to provide insights into the host. Overexploitation, habitat loss and fragmentation, invasive species, and climate change are major threats to animal conservation, and all of these can be informed by parasites.  相似文献

Restoration programs in the form of ex-situ breeding combined with reintroductions are becoming critical to counteract demographic declines and species losses. Such programs are increasingly using genetic management to improve conservation outcomes. However, the lack of long-term monitoring of genetic indicators following reintroduction prevents assessments of the trajectory and persistence of reintroduced populations. We carried out an extensive monitoring program in the wild for a threatened small-bodied fish (southern pygmy perch, Nannoperca australis) to assess the long-term genomic effects of its captive breeding and reintroduction. The species was rescued prior to its extirpation from the terminal lakes of Australia's Murray-Darling Basin, and then used for genetically informed captive breeding and reintroductions. Subsequent annual or biannual monitoring of abundance, fitness, and occupancy over a period of 11 years, combined with postreintroduction genetic sampling, revealed survival and recruitment of reintroduced fish. Genomic analyses based on data from the original wild rescued, captive born, and reintroduced cohorts revealed low inbreeding and strong maintenance of neutral and candidate adaptive genomic diversity across multiple generations. An increasing trend in the effective population size of the reintroduced population was consistent with field monitoring data in demonstrating successful re-establishment of the species. This provides a rare empirical example that the adaptive potential of a locally extinct population can be maintained during genetically informed ex-situ conservation breeding and reintroduction into the wild. Strategies to improve biodiversity restoration via ex-situ conservation should include genetic-based captive breeding and longitudinal monitoring of standing genomic variation in reintroduced populations.  相似文献
