Sonochemical reduction of the antioxidant activity of olive mill wastewater   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The use of ultrasonic irradiation to reduce the antioxidant activity of olive oil mill wastewaters (OMWs) originating from two-phase and three-phase decanters was examined. Sonication of diluted OMW samples was conducted at ultrasonic frequencies of 24 and 80 kHz, an applied power varying between 75 and 150 W, and liquid bulk temperatures varying between 25 and 60 degrees C. At the conditions in question, the reduction in antioxidant activity was found to increase with decreasing temperature and increasing power and frequency. Addition of NaCl in the samples also appeared to enhance reduction. Antioxidant activity of OMW samples was assessed using the recently developed Co(II)/ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA)-induced luminol chemiluminescence analytical protocol, while the total phenolic load was measured according to the Folin-Ciocalteu method.  相似文献

The increase in solar ultraviolet radiation can have various direct and indirect effects on human health, like the incidence of ocular damage. Data of eye damage in residents of three suburban regions in Greece and in two groups of monks/nuns and fishermen are examined here. The statistics performed on these data provides new information about the plausible association between increased levels of solar ultraviolet radiation, air-pollution at ground level, and the development of ocular defects.  相似文献

In this paper, we develop a model of international trade and climate change in which emission discharges arising from production have a feedback effect on national production sectors by impacting upon effective factor endowments. With this context, the objectives are, first, to provide a general characterization of Pareto-efficient climate and trade policies and, second, to examine the possibility – starting from non-Pareto-efficient equilibria – for Pareto-improving environmental policies. Soil column experiments are used to investigate the fate of three pesticides of high, intermediate, and low solubility in groundwater: N- phosphonomethyl glycine (glyphosate); O,O-diethyl-S-[(ethylthio)methyl]phosphorodithioate (phorate); (2,4-dichlorophenoxy)acetic acid (2,4-D). Feed solutions are prepared by adding each pesticide (100 mg/L glyphosate, 50 μ g/L phorate, 50 mg/L 2,4-D) along with conservative tracer, KBr, in synthetic groundwater. The concentration of the pesticides in effluents is detected by ion chromatography (glyphosate, 2,4-D) and GC-FID (phorate). The Br? breakthrough curves are employed to estimate the dispersion coefficient and mean pore velocity in each column. Solute transport and reactive models accounting for equilibrium/non-equilibrium sorption and biodegradation are coupled with inverse modeling numerical codes to estimate the kinetic parameters for all pesticides.  相似文献

In many practical applications, non-aqueous phase liquid (NAPL) pollutants exhibiting a clearly non-Newtonian rheological behavior (e.g. crude oil, suspensions of engine oils, asphalt, creosote, etc.) may migrate through fractured formations and contaminate aquifers. The present work is the first step toward the development of non-Darcian models concerning the non-linear NAPL flow in single fractures, and detemiination of the coupled effects of non-Newtonian NAPL rheology and flow rate on the transient immiscible displacement of an aqueous phase by a NAPL. Initially, a protocol is developed for the preparation and rheological characterization of synthetic non-Newtonian NAPLs, which are based on waxy oils. Then, an artificial transparent glass-etched single fracture of controlled morphology is fabricated and used for the measurement of the non-linear pressure gradient--superficial velocity relationship for the flow of NAPL of varying rheology. Pore network simulations and effective medium approximation (EMA) are used for the interpretation of the experimental results and derivation of an analytic non-Darcian one-phase flow model. Visualization experiments of the immiscible displacement of an aqueous phase by Newtonian and non-Newtonian NAPLs are performed on the artificial fracture under controlled values of the viscosity ratio and capillary number (ratio of viscous to capillary forces). Comparative study of the Newtonian and non-Newtonian NAPL flow patterns allows us to evaluate the interactive effects of NAPL rheology, flow rates and fracture morphology on the spatial and temporal distribution of such liquid pollutants within single fractures  相似文献

Three representative areas (lowland, semi-mountainous, and coastal) have been selected for the collection of drinking water samples, and a total number of 28 physical, chemical, and biological parameters per water sample have been determined and analyzed. The mean values of the physical and chemical parameters were found to be within the limits mentioned in the 98/83/EEC directive. The analysis of biological parameters shows that many of the water samples are inadequate for human consumption because of the presence of bacteria. Cluster analysis (CA) first was used to classify sample sites with similar properties and results in three groups of sites; discriminant analysis (DA) was used to construct the best discriminant functions to confirm the clusters determined by CA and evaluate the spatial variations in water quality. The standard mode discriminant functions, using 17 parameters, yielded classification matrix correctly assigning 96.97% of the cases. In the stepwise mode, the DA produced a classification matrix with 96.36% correct assignments using only ten parameters (EC, Cl???, NO3 ???, HCO3 ???, CO3 ???2, Ca?+?2, Na?+?, Zn, Mn, and Pb). CA and factor analysis (FA) are used to characterize water quality and assist in water quality monitoring planning. CA proved that two major groups of similarity (six subclusters) between 17 physicochemical parameters are formed, and FA extracts six factors that account for 66.478% of the total water quality variation, when all samples’ physicochemical data set is considered. It is noteworthy that the classification scheme obtained by CA is completely confirmed by principal component analysis.  相似文献

Measurement of air exchange rate provides critical information in energy and indoor-air quality studies. Continuous measurement of ventilation rates is a rather costly exercise and requires specific instrumentation. In this work, an alternative methodology is proposed and tested, where the air exchange rate is calculated by utilizing indoor and outdoor routine measurements of a common pollutant such as SO2, whereas the uncertainties induced in the calculations are analytically determined. The application of this methodology is demonstrated, for three residential microenvironments in Athens, Greece, and the results are also compared against ventilation rates calculated from differential pressure measurements. The calculated time resolved ventilation rates were applied to the mass balance equation to estimate the particle loss rate which was found to agree with literature values at an average of 0.50 h?1. The proposed method was further evaluated by applying a mass balance numerical model for the calculation of the indoor aerosol number concentrations, using the previously calculated ventilation rate, the outdoor measured number concentrations and the particle loss rates as input values. The model results for the indoors’ concentrations were found to be compared well with the experimentally measured values.  相似文献

A water quality monitoring program was undertaken from June 2004 to May 2005, on a monthly basis, in Polyphytos Reservoir of Aliakmon River. Depth, water temperature, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, pH and transparency (Secchi disk) were measured in situ, while collected water samples were analyzed in the laboratory for the determination of BOD, COD, total phosphorus (TP), ortho-phosphate (OP), chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), ammonium, nitrite and nitrate, total Kappajeldahl nitrogen (TKN) and heavy metals (Fe, Mn, Cu, Cr, Pb, Ni and Cd). Measured concentrations were compared to those from two previous studies conducted in July 1987 to June 1988 and January 1991 to February 1993. The following conclusions are drawn: the effect of the watershed on the lake environment, mostly through Aliakmon River, is significant, and it accelerates the eutrophication of the lake. The anoxic zones, which were defined in the lake, reinforce this conclusion. Nitrate, nitrite and ammonia were measured at lower concentrations compared to previous studies, while total phosphorus and chlorophyll-a were found at increased concentrations. The current trophic state of Polyphytos reservoir is eutrophic, based on the OECD method and Carlson's Trophic State Indices (TSI). The concentration of BOD and COD ranged at low levels. Furthermore, the mean concentrations of metals Fe, Mn, Cu, Cr, Pb, and Cd were below the potable water standards set by WHO and EU. During most part of the study period the ratio N/P for Polyphytos reservoir was higher than 7.2:1, and therefore, phosphorus is the limiting nutrient for algal growth.  相似文献

Soil organic carbon (SOC) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) affect long-term heavy metal solubility in biosolids-amended soils, but their role needs to be further studied under Mediterranean climatic conditions. We investigated Zn solubility, as assessed by water extraction, in two typical Greek soils amended with biosolids at 0, 20, and 100 Mg ha(-1) during a 310-d incubation period. It was found that SOC decreased by nearly 30% over time in the 100 Mg ha(-1) treatment. There was evidence that DOC affected Zn solubility, because DOC increased significantly on Day 23, probably due to a flush in microbial activity, and water-extractable Zn followed the same trend. After that, both DOC and water-extractable Zn decreased back to values similar to those of the unamended soils. Although Zn solubility did not increase overall even at high biosolids application rates, this study shows that time-limited fluctuations in Zn solubility due to sudden DOC flushes, can be significant, and need to be further investigated.  相似文献

Hazardous waste incinerators (HWIs) differ substantially from thermal power facilities, since instead of maximizing energy production with the minimum amount of fuel, they aim at maximizing throughput. Variations in quantity or composition of received waste loads may significantly diminish HWI throughput (the decisive profit factor), from its nominal design value. A novel formulation of combustion balance is presented, based on linear operators, which isolates the wastefeed vector from the invariant combustion stoichiometry kernel. Explicit expressions for the throughput are obtained, in terms of incinerator temperature, fluegas heat recuperation ratio and design parameters, for an arbitrary number of wastes, based on fundamental principles (mass and enthalpy balances). The impact of waste variations, of recuperation ratio and of furnace temperature is explicitly determined. It is shown that in the presence of waste uncertainty, the throughput may be a decreasing or increasing function of incinerator temperature and recuperation ratio, depending on the sign of a dimensionless parameter related only to the uncertain wastes. The dimensionless parameter is proposed as a sharp a’ priori waste ‘fingerprint’, determining the necessary increase or decrease of manipulated variables (recuperation ratio, excess air, auxiliary fuel feed rate, auxiliary air flow) in order to balance the HWI and maximize throughput under uncertainty in received wastes. A 10-step procedure is proposed for direct application subject to process capacity constraints. The results may be useful for efficient HWI operation and for preparing hazardous waste blends.  相似文献
