Water-soluble synthetic polymers are extensively used in cosmetics, detergents and paints. Many end up in wastewater and, later on, in wastewater-treatment plants. In order to gain an insight into their fate in such plants, fluorescence and radioactivity labelings were compared using a lab-scale reactor designed to mimic industrial conditions. Two fermentation media were considered, namely a mixture of E402 and E204 micro-organisms and an activated sludge collected from a water-treatment plant located in the south of France. A sample of low molar mass commercial poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) was labeled by radioactivity with tritium and by coupling the 6-aminofluorescein fluorescent dye. Labeled PAA-containing sludges were allowed to ferment. To monitor the fate of the polymers, aliquots of the fermented mixtures were withdrawn at selected times and centrifuged. Liquid and solid phases were analyzed by scintigraphy or UV spectrometry, depending of the labeling techniques. Both techniques led to similar distributions, c.a. 75% in the supernatant and 25% in the solid phase. Distributions remained constant during the biological tests. There was no degradation of the commercial PAA after aqueous size exclusion chromatography (SEC), in agreement with literature. These features showed that fluorescence-labeling can be used instead of the complex and expensive radiolabeling. The validated fluorescence-based method was then applied to a linear poly(acrylic acid) synthesized by ATRP and labeled with 6-aminofluorescein. There was no significant difference between the commercial and the linear poly(acrylic acid)s. In contrast, a linear PAA with 5% of tert-butyl ester repeating units was predominantly found in the solid phase although adsorption or absorption by micro-organisms could not be demonstrated. The method based on fluorescence labeling should be applicable to other water soluble polymers provided that the dye remains attached to the polymer as it was the case for the studied poly(acrylic acid)s.  相似文献

In Flanders, the northern region of Belgium, European yellow eel muscle tissue was used as an indicator of environmental and potential human dietary exposure by hazardous chemicals of surface waters and sediments. Between 1994 and 2005, over 2800 eel captured at 365 stations were analysed for PCBs, pesticides and heavy metals. Contamination of eel in Flanders fell within the range of reported concentrations in other watersheds of Western Europe. A spatial analysis of the data demonstrated that the variation in pollutant concentration tended towards higher values. This was especially evident for PCBs, lindane, endrin, dieldrin and DDE. The concentration of almost all banned substances decreased significantly during the study period.  相似文献

In this project, a sampling device and an analytical method have been developed to simultaneously analyse the most frequently found low molecular weight amines, including aliphatic, aromatic and alcohol amines. These amines are diethanolamine, ethanolamine, methylamine, isopropylamine, morpholine, dimethylamine, and aniline. A sampling device was developed using a 37 mm cassette with glass fibre filters impregnated with sulfuric acid. Immediately after sampling, the filter was transferred to vials containing a solution of dansyl chloride. Dansyl chloride was used for derivatisation because it forms aromatic sulfonamides that are fluorescent and easy to protonate for MS detection. The effect of using an internal standard made with the dansylated derivative of 1-(2-methoxyphenyl)piperazine (MOPIP) on the uncertainty and efficiency of the method was also evaluated. This internal standard was spiked directly onto filters. The coupling of HPLC/ESI-MS was used for the simultaneous analysis of all the derivatives. This method showed detection limits of about 0.03 microg mL(-1) to 0.3 microg mL(-1) of amine with an average expanded uncertainty of 3% to 6% depending on the amine. The methodology recoveries are close to 100% for all the amines, and the overall estimated expanded uncertainties vary between 10% and 13% depending on the amine. This new strategy will be useful in evaluating workplace air since a unique sampling system will be used, independent of the amine to be quantified.  相似文献

Abstract: Arctic lakes are significant emitters of methane (CH4), a potent greenhouse gas, to the atmosphere; yet no rigorous quantification of the magnitude and variability of pan‐Arctic lake emissions exists. In this study, we demonstrate the potential for a new method using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery to detect methane bubbles in lake ice to scale up whole‐lake measurements of CH4 ebullition (bubbling) to regional scales. We estimated ebullition from lakes, which is often the dominant mode of lake emissions, by mapping the distribution of bubble clusters frozen in early winter ice across surfaces of seven tundra lakes and one boreal forest lake in Alaska. Applying previously measured ebullition rates associated with four distinct classes of bubble clusters found in lake ice, we estimated whole‐lake emissions from individual lakes. The percent surface area of lake ice covered with bubbles (R2 = 0.68) and CH4 ebullition rates from lakes (R2 = 0.59) and were correlated with radar return values from RADARSAT‐1 Standard Beam mode 3 for the tundra lakes, suggesting that with appropriate scaling and consideration for variability in lake‐ice conditions, this technique has the potential to be used for estimating broader‐scale regional and pan‐Arctic lake methane emissions.  相似文献

Contents of phenolic compounds in leaf extracts often serve as a measure of plant anti-herbivore defence. This method suffers from the multifunctionality of phenolics and from problems with their colorimetric quantification. Here we present further evidence for the pertinence of these problems. Contents of condensed tannins (CCT) were spectrophotometrically quantified in leaf extracts of 11 closely related mimosoid species, and Spodoptera littoralis caterpillars were reared on artificial diet containing these extracts. The relationship of CCT with caterpillar growth differed considerably among plant species, since both positive and negative correlations were detected. There was, however, a negative correlation of CCT with fungal spore germination, indicating a role of these compounds in resistance to fungi. Detailed knowledge on the structure and biological function of defensive compounds and on the overall composition of leaves is required to estimate a plant's defensive efficacy against a particular group of enemies.  相似文献

Barren-ground caribou (Rangifer tarandus) herds in North America may reach considerable size and undertake large-scale seasonal migrations from the Arctic tundra to the boreal forest. To test the caribou decline hypothesis associated with native harvesting and fire, we have documented the long-term trends of caribou activity based on a novel approach which uses tree-ring dated trampling scars produced by caribou hooves in the extensive trails distributed over the summer and winter ranges of the Rivièreaux-Feuilles herd (RAF herd, east of Hudson Bay in northern Quebec). The age structure data of trampling scars from lichen woodlands distributed over the entire RAF range confirmed the overall trends of caribou activity from the late 1700s to present time. Over the last 200 years, the RAF herd has undergone two highs in the late 1700s and 1900s separated by a moderate activity pattern in the late 1800s. Native harvesting was possibly involved in the early 1900s decline, although at a moderate level. The reduced magnitude of caribou activity during this period has not modified the natural cycle of highs and lows, which suggests that other demographic factors were controlling the changing caribou abundance. Our data also show that only exceptionally large fires may have a minor, short-lived impact on caribou migrations but not on caribou numbers.  相似文献

Photochemical transformations (lambda-254 nm) of 2,4-dinitrotoluene (2,4-DNT) in aqueous solutions containing the cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium (CTA) and the anionic nucleophile borohydride (BH4-) were investigated. The overall decay rate was enhanced at CTA concentrations above the critical micelle concentration (cmc) when stoichiometric excess BH4- was present in solution. A kinetic model that separates the overall reaction rate into micellar and aqueous pseudo-phase components indicates transformation in micelles is 17 times faster that in the homogeneous water phase under those conditions investigated. Intermediate products were identified by comparing the HPLC retention times and ultraviolet-visible absorption spectra of product peaks to those of analytical standards. 2-Methyl-5-nitroaniline, 4-nitrotoluene, 2-nitrotoluene, 4-methyl-3-nitroaniline, 2,4-diaminotoluene, o-toluidine, 1,3-dinitrobenzene, 3-nitroaniline, p-cresol, and 2,4-diaminophenol were identified as photo-transformation intermediates or products.  相似文献

Levels of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDs), and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were measured in several fish species originating from the river Scheldt (Belgium). Five sampling locations were chosen in a highly industrialized area along the river, while two ponds in the vicinity of the river served as reference sites. The present study is a follow-up of a survey performed in 2000 which reported extremely high levels of PBDEs and HBCDs in eel (Anguilla anguilla) collected from the same region (Oudenaarde, Flanders). The sum of tri- to hepta-BDE congeners (2270+/-2260 ng/g lipid weight (lw), range 660-11500 ng/g lw) and total HBCDs (4500+/-3000 ng/g lw, range 390-12100 ng/g lw) were one order of magnitude higher than levels usually reported from freshwater systems, indicating the presence of point sources. In most samples, levels of total HBCDs were higher than those of PBDEs, probably due to the high density of factories using HBCD as an additive brominated flame retardant (BFR). The high values of HBCDs were confirmed by both gas- and liquid-chromatography-mass spectrometry. Although BFR levels were between the highest ever reported in freshwater ecosystems, PCBs could be detected at even higher concentrations (16000+/-14300 ng/g lw, range 3900-66600 ng/g lw), being among the highest levels recorded in Belgium. The inter-sampling site variation of PBDEs, HBCDs and PCBs was comparable. All locations presented similar PBDE congener profiles, with BDE 47 being the dominant congener, followed by BDE 100, BDE 99 and BDE 49, probably originating from the former use of the penta-BDE technical mixture. In order to estimate the impact of these point sources on human exposure, we further focussed on eels which showed a considerable decrease in the PBDE and HBCD levels between 2000 and 2006. Due to the wide span in concentrations between the different sampling locations, a variable contribution to the total human exposure through local eel consumption was estimated. The calculated daily intake ranged from 3 ng to 330 ng PBDEs/day for normal eel consumers, but was as high as 9800 ng PBDEs/day for anglers, which may be considered at risk.  相似文献
