A latest Cretaceous (68 to 65 million years ago) vertebrate microfossil assemblage discovered at Kakanaut in northeastern
Russia reveals that dinosaurs were still highly diversified in Arctic regions just before the Cretaceous–Tertiary mass extinction
event. Dinosaur eggshell fragments, belonging to hadrosaurids and non-avian theropods, indicate that at least several latest
Cretaceous dinosaur taxa could reproduce in polar region and were probably year-round residents of high latitudes. Palaeobotanical
data suggest that these polar dinosaurs lived in a temperate climate (mean annual temperature about 10°C), but the climate
was apparently too cold for amphibians and ectothermic reptiles. The high diversity of Late Maastrichtian dinosaurs in high
latitudes, where ectotherms are absent, strongly questions hypotheses according to which dinosaur extinction was a result

Prenatal diagnosis performed by fetal karyotype and ultrasound scan is now a routine part of antenatal care in many countries. How many fetal anomalies are actually detected by these procedures? We have used our registry of congenital malformations to answer this question. In our region, prenatal diagnosis was performed in 23.1 per cent of fetuses with a chromosomal aberration and in 20.1 per cent of fetuses with non-chromosomal anomalies. Only 6.9 per cent of the pregnancies with fetuses with non-chromosomal anomalies were terminated. The sensitivity of prenatal diagnosis by ultrasonographic examination was much lower for isolated malformations (fetuses with only one anomaly) than for multiple malformed children, 15.3 and 48.3 per cent respectively, chromosomal anomalies excluded. 相似文献

No-take reserves are sometimes implemented for sustainable population harvesting because they offer opportunities for animals to spatially avoid harvesters, whereas harvesters can benefit in return from the reserve spillover. Here, we used the framework of predator-prey spatial games to understand how protected areas shape spatial interactions between harvesters and target species and determine animal mortality. In these spatial games, the "predator" searches for "prey" and matches their habitat use, unless it meets spatial constraints offering the opportunity for prey to avoid the mortality source. However, such prey refuges could attract predators in the surroundings, which questions the potential benefits for prey. We located, in the Geneva Basin (France), hunting dogs and wild boar Sus scrofa L. during hunting seasons with global positioning systems and very-high-frequency collars. We quantified how the proximity of the reserve shaped the matching between both habitat uses using multivariate analyses and linked these patterns to animals' mortality with a Cox regression analysis. Results showed that habitat uses by both protagonists disassociated only when hunters were spatially constrained by the reserve. In response, hunters increased hunting efforts near the reserve boundary, which induced a higher risk exposure for animals settled over the reserve. The mortality of adult wild boar decreased near the reserve as the mismatch between both habitat uses increased. However the opposite pattern was determined for younger individuals that suffered from the high level of hunting close to the reserve. The predator-prey analogy was an accurate prediction of how the protected area modified spatial relationships between harvesters and target species. Prey-searching strategies adopted by hunters around reserves strongly impacted animal mortality and the efficiency of the protected area for this harvested species. Increasing reserve sizes and/or implementing buffer areas with harvesting limitations can dampen this edge effect and helps harvesters to benefit durably from source populations of reserves. Predator-prey spatial games therefore provide a powerful theoretical background for understanding wildlife-harvester spatial interactions and developing substantial application for sustainable harvesting. 相似文献

Whether communities respond smoothly or discontinuously to changing environmental conditions has important consequences for the preservation and restoration of ecosystems. Theory shows that communities may exhibit a variety of responses to environmental change, including abrupt transitions due to the existence of alternate states. However, there have been few opportunities to look for such transitions in nature. Here, we examine the impact of a two-orders-of-magnitude decrease and then increase in planktivore abundance in Wintergreen lake (Michigan, USA), caused by the extinction and reintroduction of two dominant fish species (largemouth bass, Micropterus salmoides, and bluegill, Lepomis macrochirus). Over a 16 + yr period of slow change from high planktivory to low planktivory back to high planktivory, the zooplankton community changed smoothly and predictably between states. In years of low planktivory, the zooplankton assemblage was dominated by a single, large, cladoceran species, Daphnia pulicaria, whereas in years of high planktivory, D. pulicaria disappeared and was replaced by a suite of small-bodied cladocerans. We quantified the multivariate change in zooplankton community dissimilarity and found that community state smoothly tracked changes in planktivore density in both a forward and backward direction. Storm Xynthia crossed France’s western coast between 28th February and 1st March 2010. It hit the Vendée and Charente-Maritime departments hardest, as storm surge flooded up to 23,000 ha of coastal agricultural areas (i.e. polders), causing severe damage to farming operations. However, farm-level damage in the aftermath of seawater flooding is an issue that has rarely been explored in the literature. Here we investigated the effects of storm Xynthia on agriculture at the farm scale. We focused on the case study of Saint Laurent de la Prée research farm, a mixed crop–livestock system that was severely hit. All damages were described and economic losses were quantified for the years 2010 and 2011. The results show numerous consequences of the storm in terms of crop and fodder production losses, but also farm infrastructure repairs, crop restoration and animal health problems. Economic damage costs were high, reaching €71,720 in 2010 (€500/ha flooded) and €56,195 (€390/ha) in 2011 for the case study farm. The discussion highlights the farm-level impacts of seawater flooding and the crucial factors that can explain the damage caused to agriculture by storm events in coastal areas. The results are also discussed in the wider context of global warming which is expected to cause sea level rise and more frequent storm events in the future. The vulnerability of coastal agricultural areas to storms thus exposes broader issues of coastal flooding risk management and specifically the allied protection–remediation–adaptation measures. The conclusions underline the need for future research to address prospective scenarios and subsequent adaptive strategies. 相似文献

Variation in the intensity of predation across the well-known environmental gradient of freshwater habitats from small, ephemeral ponds to large, permanent lakes is a key factor in the development and maintenance of aquatic community structure. Here, we present data on the distribution and abundance of four species of Chaoborus (Diptera: Chaoboridae) across this environmental gradient. Chaoborus show a distinct pattern of species sorting when aquatic systems are divided into fish and fishless environments, and this pattern is consistent with species traits known to influence their vulnerability to fish predation (i.e., pigmentation, diel vertical migration [DVM] behavior, and body size). To test whether fish are the drivers of this pattern, we created a gradient in fish density by stocking bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus) into 15 experimental ponds in southwestern Michigan, USA, and then allowed Chaoborus species to colonize. There was clear evidence of species sorting along the predation gradient; Chaoborus americanus was most abundant in the fishless ponds, C. flavicans was neutral in response to fish, and C. punctipennis and C. albatus were most abundant at high fish biomass, a response consistent with their field pattern. Furthermore, prey preference experiments confirm that size selective predation and differences in Chaoborus species traits contribute to the pattern of Chaoborus abundance and distribution. 相似文献

Farmland diversification practices (i.e., methods used to produce food sustainably by enhancing biodiversity in cropping systems) are sometimes considered beneficial to both agriculture and biodiversity, but most studies of these practices rely on species richness, diversity, or abundance as a proxy for habitat quality. Biodiversity assessments may miss early clues that populations are imperiled when species presence does not imply persistence. Physiological stress indicators may help identify low-quality habitats before population declines occur. We explored how avian stress indicators respond to on-farm management practices and surrounding seminatural area (1-km radius) across 21 California strawberry farms. We examined whether commonly used biodiversity metrics correlate with stress responses in wild birds. We used ∼1000 blood and feather samples and body mass and wing chord measurements, mostly from passerines, to test the effects of diversification practices on four physiological stress indicators: heterophil to lymphocyte ratios (H:L), body condition, hematocrit values, and feather growth rates of individual birds. We then tested the relationship between physiological stress indicators and species richness, abundance, occurrence, and diversity derived from 285 bird point count surveys. After accounting for other biological drivers, landscape context mediated the effect of local farm management on H:L and body condition. Local diversification practices were associated with reduced individual stress in intensive agricultural landscapes but increased it in landscapes surrounded by relatively more seminatural area. Feathers grew more slowly in landscapes dominated by strawberry production, suggesting that nutritional condition was lower here than in landscapes with more crop types and seminatural areas. We found scant evidence that species richness, abundance, occurrence, or diversity metrics were correlated with the individual's physiological stress, suggesting that reliance on these metrics may obscure the impacts of management on species persistence. Our findings underscore the importance of considering landscape context when designing local management strategies to promote wildlife conservation. 相似文献

New-production (nitrate uptake) rates in the equatorial Pacific were estimated by parallel measurements of nitrate disappearance
from sea water using a colorimetric method and of 15N-labelled nitrate (15NO3
−) incorporation into particulate organic nitrogen (PON) collected on GF/F filters (net nitrate uptake, conventional 15N-tracer method) and Anopore (0.2 μm) membranes. Regression analyses of 74 sample pairs gathered during 12 and 24 h productivity
experiments revealed a significant positive relationship between decreasing nitrate level and 15NO3
− accumulation into PON retained on GF/F filters, but the slopes of Model I and Model II regression lines were 1.18 and 1.29,
respectively, suggesting that 15 to 22% of 15NO3
− removed from the dissolved fraction were lost to another N-pool. Two possible avenues for the missing 15NO3
− have been examined: uptake by submicron particles passed through the GF/F filters, and loss as dissolved organic nitrogen
(DON). Nitrate uptake by small cells not recovered on GF/F filters, could be safely eliminated as a cause of loss, since 15NO3
− uptake rates obtained from 15N entering PON collected on GF/F filters agreed well with those obtained from 15N entering PON collected on Anopore membranes (32 sample pairs). Inspection of the DON pool of 0.2 μm filtrates for excess-15N enrichment (20 samples) revealed that in nitrate-rich waters (equatorial upwelling between 1°N and 10°S), loss of 15NO3
− as DO15N accounted for <5% of net nitrate uptake. In samples from subtropical oligotrophic waters (from 11°S southward), however,
15NO3 loss as DO15N represented up to 20% of net NO3
− uptake. These results, as well as experimental considerations concerning the use of colorimetric and isotopic methods to
measure new production show that: (1) earlier reported high discrepancies between nitrate decreases (ΔNO3
−) and 15NO3
− incorporation into filterable particles (ΔNO3
−/15NO3
− incorporation >2) were probably erroneous; (2) the use of GF/F filters does not result in an underestimation of new production,
although it was found to underestimate PON concentrations by up to 60%; (3) in the equatorial upwelling area (1°N to 10°S),
which has high ambient nitrate levels (>2000 nmol l−1) but only slight changes in concentration (0 to 80 nmol l−1 d−1), new production is more accurately estimated by the isotopic method than by the chemical method; (4) in subtropical oligotrophic
waters (from 11°S southward) with low ambient nitrate levels (0 to 100 nmol l−1), both procedures are appropriate as long as nitrate removal per incubation period is >3 nmol l−1 (lower rates are only detectable with the isotopic method); (5) the traditional 15N-tracer technique does not substantially underestimate net new-production in the equatorial Pacific, and failure to account
for the loss of 15NO3
− as DON, i.e. to estimate gross nitrate uptake (gross uptake = net uptake + 15N loss) tends to underestimate new production on an average by only 10%. Overall, the apparent low level of new production
in the nitrate-rich area of the central equatorial Pacific seems to be a fact, and may be ascribable to other nutrient (macro
and micro) deficiencies and/or to intense in situ recycling of ammonium and nitrate (regenerated production) rather than to
inaccurate nitrate uptake rates measured with the classical 15N-tracer technique.

In December 2009, during a piscicide treatment targeting the invasive Asian carp in the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal, Rhodamine WT dye was released to track and document the transport and dispersion of the piscicide. In this study, two modeling approaches are presented to reproduce the advection and dispersion of the dye tracer (and piscicide), a one-dimensional analytical solution and a three-dimensional numerical model. The two approaches were compared with field measurements of concentration and their applicability is discussed. Acoustic Doppler current profiler measurements were used to estimate the longitudinal dispersion coefficients at ten cross sections, which were taken as reference for calibrating the longitudinal dispersion coefficient in the one-dimensional analytical solution. While the analytical solution is fast, relatively simple, and can fairly accurately predict the core of the observed concentration time series at points downstream, it does not capture the tail of the breakthrough curves. These tails are well reproduced by the three-dimensional model, because it accounts for the effects of dead zones and a power plant which withdraws nearly 80 % of the water from the canal for cooling purposes before returning it back to the canal. 相似文献
