This study evaluated yield production and changes in the patterns of functional growth analysis parameters of greenhouse-grown soybeans exposed to low concentrations of ozone (O3). Plants were exposed over a 113-day interval for 341 h to four concentrations of O3 (2.0, 4.6, 7.0 and 9.7 pphm O3) on an intermittent basis. Destructive harvests were periodically taken from all treatments to monitor plant response and to provide the basis for growth analysis techniques. Relative to the ambient greenhouse air control treatment (2.0 pphm O3), 7.0 and 9.7 pphm O3 typically reduced plant biomass accumulation, leaf area and expansion, relative growth rate, unit leaf rate, seeds per plant (35% reduction), and other yield components; however, the growth and yield parameters of the 4.6 pphm O3 treatment were often stimulated. With this one exception, O3 reduced soybean vegetative growth and altered the pattern of biomass partitioning. As a consequence, the soybean yields were also reduced.  相似文献

The interstitial archiannelidTrilobodrilus axi Westheide 1967 inhabits sandy beaches of the Island of Sylt (North Sea). Spawning occurs from May to July, approximately. Development of oocytes and oviposition occur as soon as the water temperature has risen above 5 °C. In rearing experiments, the influence of temperature on maturation and release of gametes was studied in the female. Animals were collected in winter and reared at temperatures between 3° and 15°C. Within this range, development of oocytes and shedding of eggs were accelerated progressively with increasing test temperatures. Successful reproduction occurred only at temperatures above a critical level (between 3° and 6 °C). It was possible to shift the time of spawning by several months under experimental conditions; this suggests that, in the field, spawning is mainly controlled by temperature. The results indicate thatTrilobodrilus axi is probably a boreo-mediterranean species.  相似文献

In order to remain stable, dispersed social groups have to solve two fundamental problems: the coordination of movement and cohesiveness within a group and the spacing between the groups. Here, we investigate mechanisms involved in intra-group coordination and inter-group spacing using the golden brown mouse lemur, Microcebus ravelobensis, as a model for a nocturnal, solitary foraging mammal with a dispersed social system. By means of radiotelemetry and bioacoustics we studied the olfactory and vocal behaviour during nocturnal dispersal and reunion of five sleeping groups.All groups used 3–17 sleeping sites exclusively, suggesting a sleeping site-related territoriality and competition for them. The occurrence of olfactory and vocal behaviour showed an asymmetrical temporal distribution. Whereas marking behaviour was observed exclusively during dispersal, a particular call type, the trill, was used by all groups during reunions. Interestingly, these trills carried group-specific signatures.Our findings provide the first empirical evidence for nocturnal primates in a natural environment that olfactory signals represent an important mechanism to regulate the distribution of different groups in space, whereas acoustic signals control intra-group cohesion and coordination.  相似文献

The nematode Caenorhabditis elegans receives increasing attention in sediment ecotoxicology and new toxicity tests with sensitive test parameters are under development. In this study, the motility of C. elegans could be measured for the first time online in sediment, using the Multispecies Freshwater Biomonitor. Whereas single nematodes could not be recorded, groups of 10 nematodes gave typical locomotive signals in different media (water, agar, sediment) with comparable precision and accuracy. The results of this study encourage to develop a new rapid online whole-sediment toxicity test with behaviour as sensitive test parameter.  相似文献

The potential hazard of chemicals on aquatic communities are generally evaluated by standardised single-species bioassays. Safety assessment is based on results gained from organisms adapted to lentic systems and biological interactions in ecosystems are neglected. While lotic communities are often at first in contact with chemicals, it is astonishing that microcosms with lentic communities are mainly used as a bridge between laboratory bioassays and outdoor aquatic systems. Hence, we established five artificial indoor streams to simulate abiotic factors of small rivers. The closed-circuit system was filled with nutrients added to tap water. Washed pebbles were used as sediment. The dynamics of a simple biocoenoses consisting of aufwuchs, Lumbriculus variegatus Asellus aquaticus and Gammarus fossarum was investigated. The dynamic of aufwuchs and periphyton was determined as dry weight and chlorophyll-a, respectively and qualitatively by pigment pattern. The abundance of different developmental stages of L. variegatus was determined at the end of the experiment as well as the population dynamics of G. fossarum and A. aquaticus. Survival rates of gammarids and juveniles per female were investigated and data were used for modelling the population dynamics. The experiment was carried out to investigate the performance of the established artificial streams and the developed approaches to investigate effects of chemicals on a basic lotic community. The prime reason to establish this approach was to close a gap between complex artificial stream systems and laboratory single species tests to assess the impact of chemicals on the aquatic environment.  相似文献

The fate of fuel oxygenates such as methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) in the subsurface is governed by their degradability under various redox conditions. The key intermediate in degradation of MTBE and ethyl tert-butyl ether (ETBE) is tert-butyl alcohol (TBA) which was often found as accumulating intermediate or dead-end product in lab studies using microcosms or isolated cell suspensions. This review discusses in detail the thermodynamics of the degradation processes utilizing various terminal electron acceptors, and the aerobic degradation pathways of MTBE and TBA. It summarizes the present knowledge on MTBE and TBA degradation gained from either microcosm or pure culture studies and emphasizes the potential of compound-specific isotope analysis (CSIA) for identification and quantification of degradation processes of slowly biodegradable pollutants such as MTBE and TBA. Microcosm studies demonstrated that MTBE and TBA may be biodegradable under oxic and nearly all anoxic conditions, although results of various studies are often contradictory, which suggests that site-specific conditions are important parameters. So far, TBA degradation has not been shown under methanogenic conditions and it is currently widely accepted that TBA is a recalcitrant dead-end product of MTBE under these conditions. Reliable in situ degradation rates for MTBE and TBA under various geochemical conditions are not yet available. Furthermore, degradation pathways under anoxic conditions have not yet been elucidated. All pure cultures capable of MTBE or TBA degradation isolated so far use oxygen as terminal electron acceptor. In general, compared with hydrocarbons present in gasoline, fuel oxygenates biodegrade much slower, if at all. The presence of MTBE and related compounds in groundwater therefore frequently limits the use of in situ biodegradation as remediation option at gasoline-contaminated sites. Though degradation of MTBE and TBA in field studies has been reported under oxic conditions, there is hardly any evidence of substantial degradation in the absence of oxygen. The increasing availability of field data from CSIA will foster our understanding and may even allow the quantification of degradation of these recalcitrant compounds. Such information will help to elucidate the crucial factors of site-specific biogeochemical conditions that govern the capability of intrinsic oxygenate degradation.  相似文献

Objective and Background

PCB (polychlorinated biphenyle) are typical man-made environmental pollutants that cause a broad spectrum of effects in vertebrates. Although a lot has been studied about the toxic effects of xenobiotic substances on aquatic organisms, their subacute effects are not yet well known. Fish occupies a central position in freshwater food webs and therefore, carp was chosen to be our test organism. The aim of our study was the investigation of subacute effects of Aroclor 1254 (22μg l?1) on respiration, swimming activity, and biotransformation, allowing discussion of changed interaction between the available energy resources.

Methods

The respiration experiments under controlled laboratory conditions were run for 29 days (5 d before, 16 d with and 8 d after chemical exposure) with exposed carp compared to the non-exposed fish. Furthermore, the BehavioQuant system quantitatively monitors the positions of each individual fish before (8 d) and during (21 d) PCB exposure and swimming activity (number of horizontal turnings s?1) of animals was calculated. Thereafter, liver samples were taken from animals for analysis of the phase 2 enzyme activity (glutathione-S-transferase). In the respiration experiments were 6 exposure, 6 controll, and 3 solubilizer controll groups (12 animals each group); in the behavioral experiments were 9 exposure, 6 controll- und 3 solubilizer controll groups (6 animals each group), and in the enzyme activity measurements were 9 exposure, 6 controll and 3 solubilizer controll groups (6 animals each group) examined.

Results and Discussion

A clearly increased (33%) oxygen consumption due to the PCB-exposure is found to be reversible; after the exposure period the respiration of carp shows a level comparable to the oxygen consumption during non-exposure time. By evaluating quantitative behavioral parameters of animals, it becomes evident that the exposure to PCB also causes a reversible change in their swimming behavior. Chemical stress leads to a decrease of mean daily swimming activity combined with an increase of the mean number of turnings during the night. Thereafter, the swimming activity shifts to the circadian swimming behavior under control conditions. Furthermore, our measurement of soluble and microsomal glutathione-S-transferase activity of fish liver shows a significant elevation after exposure period.

Conclusion

Our results prove that it was feasible to detect sublethal effects of PCB-mixture on all parameters under these conditions successfully. Our findings imply that fish are able to cope with the chemicals and we purse the hypothesis that the higher physiological energy demand caused by increased activity of enzymes, which are involved in biotransformation of foregin substances, may be related to a higher respiration of fish stressed by xenobiotics.

Recommendation and Outlook

Further experiments should investigate the effects of PCB on ecophysiological parameters of carp fed with exposed natural food allowing discussion of ecological consequences.  相似文献

We studied polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in crop soils amended with 1000 tonnes dry weight of sewage sludges per 10,000 m2 from 1974 to 1992, then after sludges addition from 1993 to 1999. The absence of variations of total PAHs levels of control soils, averaging at 123 μg/Kg, shows the absence of horizontal contamination. During sludges addition, the total PAHs levels in amended soils increased from 232 to 402 μg/Kg. Seven years after sludges addition, it decreased to 275 μg/Kg, which is still more than twice –the levels of control soils. This finding shows that sludges PAHs are preserved in crop soils for long periods of time, on a human scale.  相似文献
