Constant environmental changes in oceanic and estuarine systems due to human activity in coastal zones require different tools and strategies for their study to be able to assess the health status of aquatic ecosystems. The Gulf of Mexico has a tremendous ecological importance because of its biological diversity. Baseline levels of blood metabolites and immune components were defined for wild tropical populations of Litopenaeus setiferus, an important shrimp species of the Gulf of Mexico. Osmotic pressure, oxy hemocyanin (OxyHc), glucose, proteins, cholesterol, lactate, and triacylglycerols (TAG) were used as indicators of physiological status; pro phenoloxydase (proPO) and phenoloxydase (PO) quantification of hemocytes, as well as respiratory burst, were used to assess the immunological status. Significant differences were observed in live weight of juveniles, males, and females of L. setiferus with mean values of 10.54, 35.05, and 40.33 g, respectively. A value of 460 mOsm/kg was recorded in the water where juveniles were sampled and 1,000 mOsm/kg in adult sampling zones. Consequently, the osmotic pressure of L. setiferus juveniles (718.02 mOsm/kg) was 22% lower than in adults (925 mOsm/kg); there were no differences between sexes. A significantly lower value in juvenile OxyHc was observed. This value was 24 and 16% lower than that observed in males and females, respectively. Hemolymph glucose, cholesterol, and triacylglycerol levels were not statistically different between shrimp stages, showing median values of 0.19, 0.32, and 0.39 mg/ml of glucose, cholesterol, and triacylglycerols, respectively. Hemocyanin was distributed normally in the juvenile–male population but not in females. A proportion between 52 to 81% of OxyHc of the total protein (OxyHc/Prot) was obtained for all stages. Digestive gland glycogen showed no normal distribution in juveniles and adults. Digestive gland glycogen was significantly higher in juveniles (median value of 2.64 mg/g) than in adults (median value of 1.58 mg/g). A higher value of lactate (0.11 mg/ml) was observed in juveniles than in males (0.09 mg/ml) and females (0.04 mg/ml). Granular cells (GC) corresponded to 36, 44, and 39% of the total hemocytes (TH) observed in juveniles, males, and females. ProPO showed no normal distribution in all stages. A high proPO activity was recorded in L. setiferus females that was 95% higher than in the juvenile–male group. Respiratory burst was divided into two groups, juveniles–males and females, and was distributed normally in both. Female respiratory burst values were 40 and 45% higher than those observed in the juvenile and male groups, respectively. There was an increment in OxyHc, proteins, PO, hemocytes, and respiratory burst with an increase in body weight. In contrast, the relationship of live weight to glucose, TAG, and proPO revealed no significant regressions. A significant decrease in cholesterol, glycogen, and lactate with an increase in body weight was also observed. We now have indicators of nutritional and immune status of juveniles and adults that can reveal changes in trophic relations and health at the population level. This will serve as a basis for using L. setiferus as environmental sentinels, as non-controversial and inexpensive models to evaluate the potential changes that human activities could exert on this important marine ecosystem.Communicated by P.W. Sexual dimorphism is common in polygynous species, and there is clear evidence that both intra-sexual competition and female
preferences can drive the evolution of large body size in males. In contrast, sexual monomorphism is often argued to reflect
a relaxation of male mate competition or an intensification of resource competition among females. Alternatively, it might
imply opportunities for females to circumvent or counteract male mate competition in a polygynandrous mating system. We test
the prediction that sexual monorphism is associated with polygynandry in the collared peccary (Pecari tajacu, Tayassuidae), a social ungulate closely related to the old-world suids. The genetic mating system in the Tayassuidae is
unknown, but its sexual monomorphism presents a striking contrast to the strong size dimorphism found in most Suidae, so that
a departure from the polygynous system common in Suidae would be noteworthy. We characterized genetic relationships among
adults within herds in three geographically distinct populations, assigned parents to 75 offspring, and tested for skew in
individual reproductive success. Parentage assignment data indicated that multiple males sire offspring within a herd, and
in the population for which genetic data were most complete, 19% of parentage assignments were potentially sired by extra-herd
males. Some litters have multiple sires, and neither males nor females monopolized reproduction, even in small herds. This
result supports our prediction and suggests that sexual monomorphism may either select for or be an evolutionary consequence

This paper examines how cumulative effects assessment (CEA) has been considered in Strategic Environmental Assessments (SEA) of regional and local plans in a number of case studies in the UK. Initially, the paper presents the legislative and regulatory requirements for assessing cumulative effects in plans and programmes in the UK. The two approaches for assessing plans in the UK, Sustainability Appraisal (SA) and SEA are discussed and in most cases, a combined SA and SEA process is undertaken by Regional and Local Planning Authorities. The strengths and weaknesses of this approach are explored, as well as their usefulness in decision making. There are problems relating to baseline, establishing trends and predicting cumulative effects at the strategic level. The issues in assessing cumulative effects within this SA/SEA framework are discussed and recommendations for improvements are made. 相似文献

Summary Observations of resting groups of African penguins Spheniscus demersus on land showed that adults were more aggressive towards juveniles than towards adults. Head coloration was important in triggering this aggression. Adults probably discriminate against juveniles to exclude inexperienced birds from co-operative feeding groups and thus maximize their own energetic returns. There was a disproportionately low frequency of penguin groups at sea containing both adult and juvenile birds. Almost a quarter of juvenile penguins moulted a variable amount of their heads into adult plumage at sea. This reduced the amount of aggression received in proportion to the degree of head moult. Head moult probably occurs in only the fittest juveniles. Birds which moult can join adult feeding groups where communal feeding enhances success. PROBLEM: There are no specific indicators for distinguishing insurance claims related to speeding and impaired driving in the information warehouse at the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia. Contributing factors are only recorded for that part of the claim data that is also reported by the police. Most published statistics on crashes that are related to alcohol or speeding are based on police-reported data, but this represents only a fraction of all incidents. METHOD: This paper proposes surrogate models to estimate the counts and the average costs associated with speeding and impaired driving to insurance claims when contributing factors are unknown. Using police-reported data, classification rules and logistic regression models are developed to form such estimates. One approach applies classification rules to categorize insurance claims into those related to speeding, impaired driving, and other factors. The counts and the costs of insurance claims for each of these strata and overall are then estimated. A second method models the probability that an insurance claim is related to speeding or impaired driving using logistic regression and uses this to estimate the overall counts and the average costs of the claims. The two methods are compared and evaluated using simulation studies. RESULTS: The logistic regression model was found to be superior to the classification model for predicting insurance claim counts by category, but less efficient at predicting average claim costs. IMPACT: Having estimates of counts and costs of insurance claims related to impaired driving or speeding for all reported crash events provides a more accurate basis for policy-makers to plan changes and benefits of road safety programs. 相似文献

INTRODUCTION: Logistic regression modelling of crash counts likely associated with speeding and impaired driving was earlier found [Zheng, Y., Cooper, P. J., & Dean, C. B. (2007). Modeling the contribution of speeding and impaired driving to insurance claim counts and costs when contributing factors are unknown. Journal of Safety Research, 38(1)] to successfully predict known outcomes in a series of simulations, but the same types of models did not accurately predict average crash costs. The aim of the study reported here was to develop a means to adjust classification model results that would improve their cost-predicting efficiency. METHOD: A classification modelling process was adjusted at the back-end using non-linear optimization to rationalize the classified proportions with the true proportions when the model was applied to representative subsets of the training data. Corrections were developed to account for cost (severity) differences arising from the classification process that were not due to true variations. The process was then applied to insurance claim test data where crash contributors were unknown. RESULTS: The optimization and severity correction procedure resulted in substantial improvement in average crash cost prediction for both impaired and unsafe speed collision involvements. The error measured against true values in 20 simulations was about half for the adjusted classification model of what it was for either unadjusted classification or logistic regression models. CONCLUSIONS: Non-linear optimization of classification matrices appears to be a workable tool for improving the predictive efficiency of models where desired outcomes represent average characteristics of records as compared to simple counts or proportions. IMPACT ON INDUSTRY: Using the methodology on a full-year of insurance claim data indicated that reliance on police-reported records alone would have underestimated the total cost of unsafe speed and impaired crashes by about 40%. Abstract Extensive surveys of sediment burdens of radiocaesium, specifically 137Cs, and other radioactive contaminants in the Arctic during the 1990′s, indicate that almost all anthropogenic radionuclides buried on continental shelves adjacent to Alaska are derived from global bomb fallout. the 137Cs (half-life: 30.2y) activities observed in surface (0–4 cm) marine sediments however, vary widely, albeit much less than the expected current inventory resulting from bomb fallout at this latitude (~100mBq cm?2). This observed geographical variation provided the opportunity to evaluate physical and biological mechanisms that may affect caesium biogeochemistry on Arctic continental shelves. We investigated whether high biological productivity in portions of the Bering and Chukchi Seas is effective in removing dissolved radiocaesium from the water column, and whether biological production in overlying water affects total radiocaesium inventories in sediments. Based upon C/N ratios in the organic fraction of shallow sediments, we found no evidence that higher inventories or surface activities of radiocaesium are present in areas with higher deposition of particulate organic matter. Based upon stable carbon isotope ratios of organic matter in sediments, we found no evidence that terrestrial runoff contributes proportionally to higher surface activities, although terrestrial runoff may affect total inventories of the radionuclide. Radiocaesium content of surface sediments was significantly correlated with total organic carbon content of sediments and the proportion of sediments in the finest sediment fractions.
