As a part of a receptor model study of the Philadelphia, PA atmosphere, particulate samples were collected from seven air pollution sources in the area: two oil-fired power plants, a coal-fired power plant, a fluidized catalytic cracker, a refuse incinerator, a secondary aluminum smelter and an antimony ore roaster. Samples were collected In two size fractions with a dilution source sampler connected to a modified dichotomous sampler. Masses of collected material were determined gravlmetrlcally. Samples were analyzed for elements by x-ray fluorescence followed by Instrumental neutron activation analysis of some samples. Other samples were analyzed by chemical methods for volatile and nonvolatile carbon, SO4 2? and NH4 +. Data are presented for up to 46 elements and species on fine (<2.5-μm aerodynamic equivalent diameter) and coarse (2.5 μm < diam < 7-10 μm) particles from each source. Although the data were collected for use in Philadelphia, they should be of value for receptor modeling of other areas having similar sources. The most unexpected results were the large amounts of rare earth elements on particles from the catalytic cracker (e.g., 0.31 percent La In fine fraction) and the oil-fired power plants (120 and 420 ppm La in fine fraction). Substantial amounts of primary SO4 2? are released from the oil-fired plants, the SO4 2? concentrations accounting for 40-45 percent of the fine particulate mass. 相似文献

Comparative data from ten families of lizards suggest that correlated evolution has occurred between the ability to identify
prey chemicals and several aspects of lingual function and morphology, abundance of vomeronasal chemoreceptor cells, and foraging
behavior. Ability to discriminate prey chemicals from control substances was measured experimentally and correlated with other
variables by Felsenstein's method. This ability increased with evolutionary increases in degree of lingual protrusion during
tongue-flicking, which may reflect the tongue's ability to reach substrates to be sampled. It increased with deepened lingual
forking and greater lingual elongation, which may be important for scent-trailing and sampling ability, respectively. Discriminatory
ability also increased with abundance of vomerolfactory chemoreceptors, which presumably reflects some aspects of analytical
capacities of the vomeronasal system. Prey chemical discrimination increased with degree of active foraging. Natural selection
for improved vomerolfactory sampling and analysis of prey chemicals by active, but not ambush, foragers appears to account
for the observed relationships. In active foragers that use vomerolfaction to locate prey, natural selection favors increased
abilities to lingually sample chemicals from environmental substrates, analyze the samples for prey chemicals, and respond
appropriately if prey chemicals or possible prey chemicals are detected. Such selection can account for the observed relationships
among the sampling device and its movements, the sense, the discriminations, and variations in foraging ecology.

The effects of the growth of the dominant species of macrophytes on phosphorus transport in the River Thame, a nutrient enriched lowland clay catchment in southern England, were assessed using a mass-balance approach. Macrophyte abundance was estimated between late March and early June at three sites along the river. the plant biomass of phosphorus and the total phosphorus content of sediments in the main part of the river channel and sediments associated with the plant roots were measured on each occasion. Total phosphorus concentrations in the river water were measured at weekly intervals at a gauging station at the lower end of the study reach. The results showed that the phosphorus content of plants at the site most impacted by sewage derived phosphorus was < 1% of the flux of total phosphorus estimated for the water column in April and May. Phosphorus contained in the total standing crop of macrophytes at the least impacted site was estimated as approximately 3% of the mean daily flux of total phosphorus in the water. Although no trends were found in the total phosphorus contents of the roots, shoots or sediments through the season, differences in the phosphorus content of the sediments were found between sites with different phosphorus loading. Higher porewater and Equilibrium Phosphate Concentrations (EPCoS) were recorded at the site most impacted by sewage effluent when compared to an upstream sampling site. 相似文献

Escape latency theory models the tradeoff between maintaining crypsis by remaining immobile near an immobile predator versus moving to flee or engage in fitness-enhancing activities. The model predicts that latency to flee increases as cost of fleeing increases and decreases as cost of remaining immobile increases. As predation risk increases, cost of fleeing, primarily due to abandoning crypsis due to immobility, decreases. Predictions have been tested for few risks and a single cost of immobility factor in only two species of active foragers. To gauge the breadth of applicability of the model, we tested effects of four risk factors and two cost of immobility factors in ambush-foraging phrynosomatid lizards, which we selected for testing because foraging mode strongly affects many aspects of ecology and behavior of lizards. Latency to flee decreased as standing distance (predator–prey distance before fleeing) decreased, predator approach speed increased, directness of approach increased, and predator persistence increased. Latency to move was shorter in the presence of food and shorter for males in the presence of females. Lizards often moved toward food or females instead of fleeing. Latency was affected as predicted by all risk and by cost of remaining immobile factors. Our findings agree with previous results for the same four risk factors and the foraging cost of immobility. That social cost of immobility affects latency as predicted is a novel finding. The model is robust, applying to ecologically diverse prey and to a wide range of factors affecting costs of fleeing and of immobility. 相似文献

Rapid-extraction oxidation process to recover and reuse copper chromium and arsenic from industrial wood preservative sludge 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Chromated copper arsenate (CCA) wood preservative can form insoluble sludges when the hexavalent chromium component is reduced by wood extractives, wood particles and preservative additives in the solution. This sludge accumulates in treating solution work tanks, sumps and in-line filters and must be disposed of as hazardous wastes by waste disposal companies at high costs. A number of commercial sludges were investigated and found to contain 18-94% copper, chromium and arsenic as oxides combined with sand, oil, wood particles, additives and wood extractives. We have developed a multi-stage recycling process whereby approximately 97% of the CCA components are recovered from the sludge. It involves extraction with sodium hypochlorite to remove and oxidize chromium (more than 90%) and extract most of the arsenic (approx. 80%) followed by extraction of the copper and remaining arsenic and chromium with phosphoric acid. The phosphoric acid extract contains some trivalent chromium, which is subsequently oxidized by sodium hypochlorite. The combined oxidized extract containing CrVI, CuII and AsV was compatible with CCA treating solutions and could be re-used commercially for treating wood without having a significant effect on the preservative fixation rate or the leach resistance of the treated wood. A cost analysis showed that the economic savings from recovery of CCA chemicals and reduced landfill costs exceeded the variable costs for materials and energy for the process by as much as Can $966 per tonne of sludge if sodium sulfite can be acquired in bulk quantities for the process. 相似文献

ABSTRACT: Sedimentation rates since 1954 in Lake Pepin, as determined from the content of fallout cesium-137 in the sediment profile, have exceeded 2.5 cm/yr in the upper part of the lake. These rates, although somewhat less than those of the previous half century (1895–1954), are sufficiently large that the upstream portion of Lake Pepin is threatened with conversion to a marsh within a century. The density of the sediments measured increased with depth in the sampled profile from 1.1 to 1.2 g/ml at the sediment surface to 1.4 to 1.5 g/ml at 2- or 3-m depth. There was little or no change in the patterns of textural composition or density of the sediment profile with depth and age over the past 80 to 150 years. 相似文献
