Settled dust has been collected inside the main foyers ofthree University buildings in Wolverhampton City Centre,U.K. Two of the three buildings are located in a streetcanyon used almost exclusively by heavy duty dieselvehicles. The dust was collected on adhesive carbonspectro-tabs to be in a form suitable for analysis byscanning electron microscope and energy dispersive X-rayanalysis. Using these analytical techniques, individualparticle analysis was undertaken for morphology andchemistry. Seasonal variations and variations due tolocation were observed in both the morphologicalmeasurements and chemical analysis. Oxygen Release Compound (ORC®) is a patented formulation of intercalated magnesium peroxide that releases oxygen slowly when hydrated. ORC treatment represents a “low intensity” approach to site remediation. It provides a simple, passive, low-cost and long-term acceleration of aerobic natural attenuation and has been shown to cost-effectively reduce time to site closure. ORC is now a proven technology as evidenced by its five years of use on over 5,000 sites in 50 states and 11 countries, and the existence of a full body of independent, peer reviewed literature on its performance. The first applications of ORC were for the treatment of benzene, toulene, ethylbenzene, and xylene (BTEX) and other light petroleum hydrocarbon fractions. Use has now expanded to the treatment of heavier fractions such as heating oil and some of the Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). More recently. ORC has been used to bioremediate the highly mobile and problematic gasoline oxygenate methyl tertiary butyl ether (MTBE) and has been applied to sites impacted with nitroaromatics, chloroaromatics, and some of the lower-order chlorinated hydrocarbons that can be treated aerobically—most notably vinyl chloride. Since ORC is an insoluble powder, it can be packaged in material composed of a specially designed filter fabric. These “filter socks” are then contacted with contaminated groundwater via an array of wells or trenches. ORC can also be mixed directly with water to form a slurry for permanent injection applications in the saturated zone or dispersed in powdered form for the in-situ or ex-situ treatment of soil. A broad array of treatment points, in which ORC slurry is backfilled or injected, can be implemented with low-cost, small-bore push-point technologies to directly treat dissolved phase plumes and moderate levels of sorbed contaminants. Relative to manufacturing, service activities are often considered by planners and officials to generate considerably less environmental pollution. This hypothesis is tested by means of an examination of the economic linkages of both manufacturing and service activities and of the resulting direct and indirect emissions of five air pollutants per dollar of output in the California statewide air basin and in four regional basins within the state. A paper by Hofmann et al. (2009, this journal) is critiqued. It is shown that their exponential model for characterizing CO2 trajectories for historical data is not estimated properly. An exponential model is properly estimated and is shown to fit over the entire 51 year period of available data. Further, the entire problem of estimating models for the CO2 historical data is shown to be ill-posed because alternate model forms fit the data equally well. To illustrate this point the past 51 years of CO2 data were analyzed using three different time-dependent models that capture the historical pattern of CO2 increase. All three fit with R2 > 0.98, are visually indistinguishable when overlaid, and match each other during the calibration period with R2 > 0.999. Projecting the models forward to 2100, the exponential model comes quite close to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) best estimate of 836 ppmv. The other two models project values far below the IPCC low estimates. The problem of characterizing historical CO2 levels is thus indeterminate, because multiple models fit the data equally well but forecast very different future trajectories. 相似文献

The chemistry associated with the disinfection of aquarium seawater is more complicated than that of freshwater, therefore limited information is available on the formation and speciation of disinfection byproducts(DBPs) in marine aquaria. In this study, the effects of organic precursors, bromide(Br-) and pre-ozonation on the formation and speciation of several typical classes of DBPs, including trihalomethanes(THM4), haloacetic acids(HAAs),iodinated trihalomethanes(I-THMs), and haloacetamides(HAc Ams), were investigated during the chlorination/chloramination of aquarium seawater. Results indicate that with an increase in dissolved organic carbon concentration from 4.5 to 9.4 mg/L, the concentrations of THM4 and HAAs increased by 3.2–7.8 times under chlorination and by 1.1–2.3 times under chloramination. An increase in Br-concentration from 3 to 68 mg/L generally enhanced the formation of THM4, I-THMs and HAc Ams and increased the bromine substitution factors of all studied DBPs as well, whereas it impacted insignificantly on the yield of HAAs. Pre-ozonation with 1 mg/L O3 dose substantially reduced the formation of all studied DBPs in the subsequent chlorination and I-THMs in the subsequent chloramination. Because chloramination produces much lower amounts of DBPs than chlorination, it tends to be more suitable for disinfection of aquarium seawater. 相似文献
