The aim of these trials was to study the distribution of dieldrin in soil and its translocation to roots and the aerial parts of vegetable crops grown in greenhouses and fields. The main objectives were to characterize dieldrin accumulation in plant tissues in relation to the levels of soil contamination; uptake capability among plants belonging to different species, varieties and cultivars. The presence of the contaminant was quantified by gas chromatography-electron capture detector (GC-ECD) and confirmed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS). The results showed a translocation of residues in cucurbitaceous fruits and flowers confirming that zucchini, cucumber and melon are crops with high uptake capability. The maximum level of dieldrin residue at 0.01 mg/kg was found to be a threshold value to safeguard the quality production of cucurbits. Tomato, lettuce and celery were identified as substitute crops to grow in contaminated fields. 相似文献

Pest control agents, such as juvenile hormone analogues (JHA), have been developed to limit effects on non-target organisms that co-inhabit insect pest habitats. Rhithropanopeus harrisii, an estuarine xanthid crab, was used to observe the impacts of the JHA, fenoxycarb, on the pattern of complete larval development as well as survival of larvae and successful metamorphosis to first crab stage. Significant mortality occurred in the first of four zoeal stages (after 2-3 days of exposure) at the highest treatment of 240 microg fenoxycarb/l and in megalopae exposed to 48 microg fenoxycarb/l. The time required to metamorphose to the first crab stage was significantly increased for megalopae in all treatments 48 microg/l. This delay in development was sufficient to significantly prolong the entire developmental period from zoea to crabs. Unexposed larvae developed to crabs in an average of 16 days; larvae exposed to >/=48 microg/l required 19-20 days. Reduced survival and extended duration of developing larval stages in the life history of a benthic invertebrate may alter the population dynamics of these organisms in the estuary. 相似文献

This paper presents a model for the geometry of nonaqueous phase liquid (NAPL) pools and mounds in homogeneous soils and soils with discrete textural interfaces. It is shown that the concepts of capillary pressure-saturation curve hysteresis and entry pressures are integral to the complete conceptualization of pool and mound geometry. Unless hysteresis is included in the analysis, light NAPL (LNAPL) in homogeneous soils cannot exist in pools at all, and dense NAPL (DNAPL) will not mound on horizontal textural interfaces unless lateral confining boundaries are present. The proposed model also implies that remobilization of DNAPL pools will occur at lower hydraulic gradients than those predicted with previous models. Comparing predicted and experimental DNAPL and LNAPL pool thicknesses and the location of an LNAPL lens with respect to the top of the capillary fringe validate the model. 相似文献

An extensive investigation was carried out for the characterisation of the air particulate composition in Florence. The aim was to determine the aerosol elemental concentrations, as well as to identify pollution sources. For our investigation, the external Particle-Induced X-Ray Emission-Particle-Induced gamma-Ray Emission beam facility of the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare, Van de Graaff accelerator at the Physics Department of the Florence University was used. We report the results of the analysis of a long temporal series (approximately 1 yr) of PM10 particulate samples, collected on Millipore filters on a daily basis in three different sites (characterised by different urban settings). Daily concentrations of more than 20 elements were detected. The long sampling period (approximately 1 yr) allowed a comparison with the air quality recommended values and the identification of seasonal variations. Four main sources (traffic, oil-combustion, soil-dust, and wind transported sea-salt) were extracted with the help of Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Spheroidal carbonaceous particles (SCPs) provide an unambiguous indication of atmospherically deposited contamination from industrial sources. SCP data from a 12 year annual sediment trapping and coring programme at 14 lakes based on the UK Acid Waters Monitoring Network, were used to consider temporal trends in deposition and to compare these with measured non-marine sulphate fluxes. Results show good temporal coherence across a broad area of northern UK and that SCP deposition levels and are now at their lowest since the 1940s, in agreement with modelled sulphate data. SCP fluxes show reasonable linearity with measured non-marine sulphate depositional fluxes from the nearest UK Acid Deposition Monitoring Network sites, especially over the post-flue-gas desulphurisation period, but comparisons prior to 1972 are not possible due to lack of data. We speculate on whether palaeolimnological SCP data might be used to reconstruct the history of non-marine sulphate fluxes from industrial sources. 相似文献

This study aimed at: (a) providing information on the occurrence and concentration ranges in urban stormwater for a wide array of pollutants (n?=?77); (b) assessing whether despite the differences between various catchments (land use, climatic conditions, etc.), the trends in terms of contamination level are similar; and (c) analyzing the contribution of total atmospheric fallout (TAF) with respect to sources endogenous to this contamination. The studied contaminants include conventional stormwater contaminants (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), Zn, Cu, Pb, etc.), in addition to poorly or undocumented pollutants such as nonylphenol and octylphenol ethoxylates (NPnEO and OPnEO), bisphenol A (BPA), polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), a wide variety of pesticides, and various metals of relevance (As, Ti, Sr, V). Sampling and analysis were performed using homogeneous methods on three urban catchments with different land use patterns located in three distinct French towns. For many of these pollutants, the results do not allow highlighting a significant difference in stormwater quality at the scale of the three urban catchments considered. Significant differences were, however, observed for several metals (As, Cr, Cu, Ni, Sr and Zn), PAHs, and PBDEs, though this assessment would need to be confirmed by further experiments. The pollutant distributions between dissolved and particulate phases were found to be similar across the three experimental sites, thus suggesting no site dependence. Lastly, the contributions of TAF to stormwater contamination for micropollutants were quite low. This finding held true not only for PAHs, as previously demonstrated in the literature, but also for a broader range of molecules such as BPA, NPnEO, OPnEO, and PBDEs, whose high local production is correlated with the leaching of urban surfaces, buildings, and vehicles. 相似文献

Tendergreen bean plants were grown from seeding to seed maturity under continuous exposure to HF gas at fairly uniform concentrations averaging 0.58, 2.1, 9.1, and 10.5 µg F/m3. Progeny of these plants and of comparable control plants were grown in a clean atmosphere to determine if subsequent generations were affected by HF treatment of the parents. No effects of HF were found among the progeny of the plants grown at 0.58 µg F/m3. The F1 generation progeny of the other HF treated plants were less vigorous than control plant progeny, as shown by later emergence, smaller primary leaves, and slower stem growth. This probably was a consequence of the lower starch content of the seed of the HF treated plants. The primary leaves of some F1 progeny of the plants grown in the three highest HF treatments were severely stunted and distorted. This also may have been due to the low starch content of the seed, or perhaps it resulted from damage to the plumules in shriveled, distorted seed produced in these treatments. Some of the early trifoliate leaves of many F1 generation progeny of the plants grown at 2.1 µg F/m3 and higher were abnormal in the separation and number of their leaflets. This abnormality apparently was heritable, for in the next (F2) generation it occurred most frequently among plants whose parents were abnormal. However, considerably fewer F3 generation plants had abnormal trifoliate leaves, indicating rapid reversal to the normal form. 相似文献

The best method of controlling varnish kettle emissions is by thermal incineration. Two new approaches have been developed; these utilize the integral-blower burner and the non-powered raw gas burner. Both of these new approaches offer significant advantages over conventional methods of incineration. Installation, operating, and maintenance costs are substantially reduced when either approach is utilized. When compared to conventional methods, the new approaches achieve an increase of 100% in mixing velocity or turbulence. This results in a reduction of 20% in fuel consumption. Residence time is reduced by 29% via the non-powered raw gas burner approach. An average reduction of 65% is obtained in the length to diameter ratio. Choice of which approach depends upon several factors, primarily the type of fuel available and the minimum oxygen concentration in the fume stream. 相似文献

Aerosols attributable to automobile exhaust can be classified as two types—primary aerosol (initially present in the exhaust) and secondary aerosol (generated photochemically from hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides in the exhaust). In this study, investigation was made of possible effects of motor-fuel composition on the formation of these aerosols. Secondary aerosol, of principal interest in this work, was produced by irradiating auto exhaust in Battelle-Columbus’ 610 ft3 environmental chamber. A limited number of determinations of primary aerosol in diluted auto exhaust was made at the exit of a 36 ft dilution runnel. Determination of both primary and secondary aerosol was based on light-scattering measurements. Exhaust was generated with seven full-boiling motor gasolines, both leaded and nonleaded, in a 1967 Chevrolet which was not equipped with exhaust-emission control devices. Changes in fuel composition produced a maximum factor of three difference in light scattering due to primary aerosol. Aerosol yields, for consecutive driving cycles on the same fuel, vary considerably; as a result, ranking the fuels on the basis of average primary aerosol yield was not very meaningful. In addition to fuel composition, the more important independent variables are initial SO2 concentration, relative humidity and initial hydrocarbon concentration. Statistical analysis of the data indicates that the seven test fuels can be divided into two arbitrary groups with regard to secondary aerosol-forming potential. The fuels in the lower light-scattering group had aromatic contents of 15 and 21%, while those in the higher light-scattering group had aromatic contents of 25, 48, and 55%. Although the fuels can be grouped on the basis of a compositional factor, the grouping of fuels with aromatic content ranging from 25 to 55% indicates that this compositional factor cannot be equated simply with aromatic content. In an associated study of the aerosol-forming potential of individual hydrocarbons prominent in auto exhaust, it was observed that aromatics produce substantially more photochemical aerosol than olefins and paraffins. However, experiments with binar/hydrocarbon mixtures containing aromatjcs, as well as in these exhaust experiments, a strong dependence of aerosol yield on the aromatic components is is not observed. Thus, the data indicate that the dependence of secondary aerosol formation on fuel factors is a complex one and cannot be predicted solely on the basis of a sirigle hydrocarbon component reactivity scale. The two types of automobile aerosol did not have the same dependence on fuel, composition. The variation in total light scattering attributable to primary plus secondary aerosol was less than that due to either component alone. It therefore was concluded that the light scattering due to automobile exhaust emissions in these experiments was not significantly affected by changing fuel composition. 相似文献

This study assessed the runoff potential of tylosin and chlortetracycline (CTC) from soils treated with manure from swine fed rations containing the highest labeled rate of each chemical. Slurry manures from the swine contained either CTC at 108 μ g/g or tylosin at 0.3 μ g/g. These manures were surface applied to clay loam, silty clay loam, and silt loam soils at a rate of 0.22 Mg/ha. In one trial, tylosin was applied directly to the soil surface to examine runoff potential of water and chemical when manure was not present. Water was applied using a sprinkler infiltrometer 24-hr after manure application with runoff collected incrementally every 5 min for about 45 min. A biofilm crust formed on all manure-treated surfaces and infiltration was impeded with > 70% of the applied water collected as runoff. The total amount of CTC collected ranged from 0.9 to 3.5% of the amount applied whereas tylosin ranged from 8.4 to 12%. These data indicate that if surface-applied manure contains antimicrobials, runoff could lead to offsite contamination. 相似文献
