Understanding the environmental effects of alternative fuel production is critical to characterizing the sustainability of energy resources to inform policy and regulatory decisions. The magnitudes of these environmental effects vary according to the intensity and scale of fuel production along each step of the supply chain. We compare the spatial extent and temporal duration of ethanol and gasoline production processes and environmental effects based on a literature review and then synthesize the scale differences on space–time diagrams. Comprehensive assessment of any fuel-production system is a moving target, and our analysis shows that decisions regarding the selection of spatial and temporal boundaries of analysis have tremendous influences on the comparisons. Effects that strongly differentiate gasoline and ethanol-supply chains in terms of scale are associated with when and where energy resources are formed and how they are extracted. Although both gasoline and ethanol production may result in negative environmental effects, this study indicates that ethanol production traced through a supply chain may impact less area and result in more easily reversed effects of a shorter duration than gasoline production. 相似文献

A high flow rate four-stage impacfor was developed for the determination of aerosol concentration as a function of both particle size and time. The unit is very useful for long-term sampling intervals (24 hr) and for sampling very dusty atmospheres. Gas-borne particulate matter is collected out on four rotating drums, each with a collection surface area of about 10 sq in.; this allows a large quantity of materials to be collected without danger of particle build-up and blow-off. The Ceilcote ionizing wet scrubber installed on a refractory brick kiln was evaluated with tests involving particulate mass emission, particle size distribution, and opacity. The overall efficiency was 93% with an average outlet opacity of 8% on a 1.68 m (5.5 ft) path length. The average particle cut diameter of the scrubber is 0.5 microns with a theoretical power input of 67 W/am3 (2.5 hp/1000 acfm). The theoretical power requirement for the ionizing wet scrubber was 41 W/am3 (1.54 hp/1000 acfm). A cooling tower supplying chilled water to the prescrubber required an additional 26 W/am2 (0.96 hp/1000 acfm) for a total system input of 67 W/am3 (2.5 hp/1000 acfm). Coastal environments in Australia are under development pressures. Human settlement encroaches on disease vector salt marsh mosquito breeding areas that are underlain by potential acid sulfate soils (PASS). Altering the hydrology by runneling solves the mosquito problem but may lead to acid sulfate problems. Appropriate analytical tools can assess the risk to the environment. The objective of the research was to compare three methods of assessing PASS. The study area was a low-lying intertidal subtropical salt marsh that was being considered for runneling. The results indicated that using field pH and field peroxide pH (and the relationship between these), and also the peroxide oxidation-combined acidity and sulfate (POCAS) test, appeared to overestimate the potential acidity. This was because the source of acidity in the intertidal salt marsh includes a large organic content, which is not a major environmental concern. The chromium-reducible sulfur test, which is not affected by organic content, was found to provide the most appropriate assessment, and is recommended for use in highly organic salt marshes. 相似文献

We have conducted measurements of naturally occurring radionuclides (7)Be, (210)Pb and (210)Po in air at ground level at Chilton, Oxfordshire, England. The sampling and analysis regime for the latter two isotopes has been optimised to minimise uncertainties in measurement due to decay of (210)Po and in-growth of (210)Pb during the sampling and analysis period. Analysis times were reduced by using Cerenkov counting to assay the (210)Bi daughter of (210)Pb. Monthly data collected over a four-year period are presented and discussed. (7)Be activity concentrations appear to peak in spring. (210)Pb activity concentrations also follow a seasonal trend reflecting different (222)Rn emanation rates from soil during winter and summer. The electrostatic granular filter developed by Combustion Power Company combines a moving-bed filter with an electrostatic grid for high-efficiency collection of particulate. The coulomb charge occurring naturally on particulate from combustion or other processes in which tribocharging occurs is sufficient such that imposition of an electric field substantially enhances mechanical collection in the packed filter. A mathematical model is presented which accounts for the major parameters affecting electrostatic performance. Experimental data developed in an industrial unit retrofitted with electrostatic equipment and a pilot-scale filter demonstrates dramatic improvement in opacity and outlet loading; the industrial unit achieved 99% collection efficiency with less that 4 Iwd (1kPa) pressure drop. Data from the pilot-scale filter has shown that collection of micron-size particulate is especially enhanced with the electric field and has confirmed the 99% overall collection capability demonstrated in the industrial unit. The design of a 420,000 acfm (1200 m3/min) system being installed at Weyerhaeuser Company's Longview, Washington plant is also discussed. 相似文献

Prior to Anglo-European settlement, fire was a major ecological process influencing the structure, composition and productivity of shortgrass prairie ecosystems on the Great Plains. However during the past 125 years, the frequency and extent of grassland fire has dramatically declined as a result of the systematic heavy grazing by large herds of domestic cattle and sheep which reduced the available levels of fine fuel and organized fire suppression efforts that succeeded in altering the natural fire regime. The greatly diminished role of recurrent fire in these ecosystems is thought to be responsible for ecologically adverse shifts in the composition, structure and diversity of these grasslands, leading specifically to the rise of ruderal species and invasion by less fire-tolerant species. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ecological effects of fire season and frequency on the shortgrass prairie and to determine the means by which prescribed fire can best be restored in this ecosystem to provide the greatest benefit for numerous resource values. Plant cover, diversity, biomass and nutrient status, litter cover and soil chemistry were measured prior to and following fire treatments on a buffalograss-blue grama shortgrass prairie in northeastern New Mexico. Dormant-season fire was followed by increases in grass cover, forb cover, species richness and concentrations of foliar P, K, Ca, Mg and Mn. Growing-season fire produced declines in the cover of buffalograss, graminoids and forbs and increases in litter cover and levels of foliar P, K, Ca and Mn. Although no changes in soil chemistry were observed, both fire treatments caused decreases in herbaceous production, with standing biomass resulting from growing-season fire approximately 600 kg/ha and dormant-season fire approximately 1200 kg/ha, compared with controls approximately 1800 kg/ha. The initial findings of this long-term experiment suggest that dormant-season burning may be the preferable method for restoring fire in shortgrass prairie ecosystems where fire has been excluded for a prolonged time period. 相似文献
