The sponge Latrunculia magnifica was found to be toxic for fish. A toxin has been isolated from this sponge by organic extraction-column chromatography and thin-layer chromatography. Several chemical properties of the toxin were determined by spectroscopic analysis. Toxicity tests were performed on the fish Gambusia affinis. In vitro experiments showed the toxin to be a cholinesterase inhibitor.  相似文献

Pigment composition and size distribution of phytoplankton were analysed in a group of Mediterranean salt marshes, where hydrology is dominated by sudden inputs during sea storms, followed by long periods of confinement. These marshes are characterized by a low inorganic–organic nutrient ratio, and inorganic nitrogen is especially scarce due to denitrification. Nutrients were the main factor affecting phytoplankton biomass, while zooplankton grazing did not control either phytoplankton community composition, or their size distribution. The relative abundance of the different phytoplankton groups was analysed by correspondence analysis using the pigment composition measured by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and analysed with the CHEMTAX programme. In this analysis, phytoplankton pigment composition was correlated with two nutrient gradients. The first gradient was the ratio of nitrate–total nitrogen (TN), since the different phytoplankton groups were distributed according to their eco–physiological differences in nitrogen uptake. The second gradient was correlated with total nutrient loading. Biomass size distributions frequently showed a lack of intermediate sized nanophytoplankton (2.5–4 μm in diameter), and the importance of this lack of intermediate sizes correlated with dinoflagellate biomass. These results suggested that in confined environments, where nutrients are mainly in an organic form, dinoflagellates take advantage of their mixotrophy, by competing and grazing on smaller phytoplankters simultaneously.  相似文献

Summary. Individuals in an insect colony need to identify one another according to caste. Nothing is known about the sensory process allowing nestmates to discriminate minute variations in the cuticular hydrocarbon mixture. The purpose of this study was to attempt to model caste odors discrimination in four species of Reticulitermes termites for the first time by a non-linear mathematical approach using an "artificial neural network" (ANN). Several rounds of testing were carried out using 1 – the whole hydrocarbon mixtures 2 – mixtures containing the hydrocarbons selected by principal component analysis (PCA) as the most implicated in caste discrimination. Discrimination between worker and soldier castes was tested in all four species. For two species we tested discrimination of four castes (workers, soldiers, nymphs, neotenics). To test cuticular pattern similarity in two sibling species (R. santonensis and R. flavipes), we performed two experiments using one species for training and the other for query. Using whole hydrocarbons mixtures, worker/soldier discrimination was always successful in all species. Network performance decreased with the number of hydrocarbons used as inputs. Four-caste discrimination was less successful. In the experiment with the sibling species, the ANN was able to distinguish soldiers but not workers. The results of this study suggest that non-linear mathematical analysis is a good tool for classification of castes based on cuticular hydrocarbon mixture. In addition this study confirms that hydrocarbon mixtures observed are real chemical entities and constitute a true chemical signature or odor. Three species of Carapidae have in common a tenuis larval stage, during which they settle in the lagoon and take refuge in the same species of holothuroid. From the juvenile stage, Carapus homei and C. boraborensis are commensal, whereas Encheliophis gracilis is parasitic. The aims of this study were to analyse to what extent the ontogenetic changes of the otic capsule affected the shape of the inner ear and how environmental cues, due to the above-mentioned life history and the style, could influence the structure of the sagitta. Sagittal sections revealed a three-dimensional asymmetry with a nucleus close to the proximal surface. Observations of the growth axis of the sagitta suggest it has a morphogenetic impact on the otic cavity. Each sagitta contains three main zones related to the life stages of the fish. Bands and checks were observed in the third zone in C. homei and C. boraborensis, but this pattern was less discernible in E. gracilis. These structural differences in zone 3 could be related to the commensal and parasitic life styles of these fishes. Further studies dealing with otosac features and otolith functions are suggested.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

The seasonal variations in Pseudo-nitzschia species and domoic acid (DA) concentration were investigated, at three shellfish farms in SW coastal Mediterranean. In parallel, the toxicity of mussels was tested. Two distinct groups of species were enumerated according to morphology and size (Pseudo-nizschia delicatissima and P. seriata groups). DA was detected over a nine-week period from July to October 2012 in the Lagoon, with a maximum concentration recorded in July (12.71?ng?DA?L?1). DA was positively correlated with the presence of P. seriata-group and P. delicatissima-group and was mostly occurred during P limitation period in seawater. No DA was found in mussels that were collected during the period of DA absence in seawater. Our results suggest that temperature, salinity, inorganic and organic nutrients were significant for the seasonal dynamics of P. seriata and P. delicatissima groups, but that the P limitation was the most driving factor for DA production in these areas. The relative influence of environmental factors should be further studied to better understand the recent surfacing of massive blooms of toxigenic Pseudo-nitzschia in SW Mediterranean coast.  相似文献

Behavioural patterns of Nereis virens (Sars) were monitored in the laboratory to determine variations in the time budget (i.e., percentage of time spent in various activities) as a function of density and acclimation period (number of days following the introduction of worms into experimental enclosures). Experiments were carried out from 17 June to 13 August 1989, using worms collected from intertidal sand flats of l'Anse à l'Orignal in the lower Saint Lawrence estuary, Canada. Inactivity, locomotion and irrigation were, in that order, the most frequent behaviours for solitary individuals. Correlations between the time spent in the various activities and time of day indicated a general increase in activity during the night (21.00 to 06.00 hrs). Locomotory activity increased at night, inactivity during the daytime. A general sequence of behaviour of N. virens was revealed. Inactivity, locomotion and irrigation were still the most frequent activities for individuals observed in high-density conditions, but their respective importance differed significantly (locomotion, irrigation and inactivity, in that order). There was also less variability in the time spent for each behaviour in the high-density aquarium. Comparisons between behaviour and time of day suggested fewer correlations among the different components of the time budgets under conditions of high density. Finally, the time budget varied but little over time (number of days alloved for acclimation) in the low-density aquarium as opposed to the high-density aquarium. Our study revealed that population density and acclimation are important in determining behavioural patterns of N. virens.  相似文献

Summary. Cotesia plutellae is a specialist parasitoid of Plutella xylostella. This specificity is potentially under the control of several factors before and after oviposition. Thereby, the stimuli that lead female parasitoids to host locations and to oviposition, might be at the basis of the specificity. We explore here the response of C. plutellae females exposed to host cuticular lipids. A total cuticular lipid extract of host caterpillars was fractionated into a hydrocarbon fraction and a non-hydrocarbon fraction. Neither fraction alone had any effect on oviposition behaviour in C. plutellae but the hydrocarbon fraction alone did seem to have a positive effect on the rate of antennal contact by the females. To induce oviposition behaviour, both fractions were necessary and reflect cooperation between at least one compound in each fraction. Identification of cuticular lipids shows that hydrocarbons were dominant (77%). Non-hydrocarbon compounds were mainly represented by 15-nonacosanone (18% of the total lipid extract). This ketone is rare in insect cuticle lipids and is thought to originate from the cabbage epicuticle where it is dominant with n-C29 and 14- and 15-nonacosanol also found among the cuticular lipids of the host caterpillar.  相似文献
