In this commentary, we discuss recent experiments on the reliability of bird song as a signal of aggressive intent during
territorial conflicts. We outline relevant theoretical views on honest signaling, highlighting the vulnerability handicap
hypothesis as a possible explanation for soft song’s reliability in predicting attack. We also sketch possible methods of
testing whether soft song agrees with key predictions of the vulnerability handicap hypothesis. Finally, we suggest possible
empirical refinements that may be useful in future studies of signals of intent, both in birds and in animals broadly. In
particular, we argue that future studies of intent should strive to incorporate the following elements into their experimental
design: (1) multi-modal signal components, (2) interaction dynamics, and (3) minimal time intervals. Simulated exchanges using
dynamically interactive models may provide a powerful means of incorporating all three of these design features simultaneously.

This study reviewed literature on spawning times for three north temperate species of anguillid eels estimated by sampling
for small leptocephali (larvae) at sea and for several temperate and tropical species by back-calculating from putative daily
ages derived from otolith increment analysis of glass eels that recruited to coastal waters. Estimates from otoliths of European
eels, Anguilla anguilla, American eels, Anguilla rostrata, and Japanese eels, Anguilla japonica, imply much more protracted spawning seasons than are indicated by sampling at sea during various times of year. European
eels are inferred to spawn year-round from otolith analysis, but the smallest, recently hatched leptocephali are found only
in late winter and spring. From otoliths, the spawning times of these three species are all estimated to occur much later
in the year than when small leptocephali are found at sea, indicating that ages appear to be underestimated. For these and
other temperate and tropical eels, there are inconsistencies in assigned ages among various studies, which are most extreme
for the European eel. This species has the longest larval migration and often has an opaque zone in the glass eels’ otoliths
where it is difficult to discern growth increments. These inconsistencies suggest that interpretation of otolith growth increments
is incorrect at least in some studies, and the apparently consistent mismatch between otolith and sea-sampling studies suggests
that increments may not always be formed at some period during the unusual early life history of anguillids. Because daily
increments may be formed in eels during most of their early life history, future research is needed to determine the cause
of the mismatch of glass eel aging studies and the apparent spawning times of eels offshore.

Little is known about how cryptic colouration influences prey search in near-surface aquatic habitats, although such knowledge
is critical for understanding the adaptive value of colour crypsis as well as the perceptive constraints influencing foraging
behaviour in these environments. This study had two main aims: (1) to investigate how background colour matching by prey affects
foraging efficiency by brown trout parr and (2) to investigate how foraging ability on cryptic and conspicuous prey is affected
by fish size at age (reflecting dominance). We addressed these questions by training wild brown trout parr to forage individually
on live brown-coloured maggots on a cryptic (brown) or conspicuous (green) background. A separate experiment confirmed the
absence of trout preference for brown or green substrate. The results show that prey background colour matching increases
search time in brown trout. Search time generally decreased by learning, but conspicuous prey remained an easier prey to find
throughout the six training trials. Thus, perceptive constraints appear to limit search efficiency for cryptic prey, suggesting
that cryptic colouration can confer survival benefits to prey in natural environments. Smaller fish generally found conspicuous
prey faster than larger individuals, whereas search time for cryptic prey was not influenced by body size. This suggests that
smaller individuals compensate for inferior competitive ability by increasing foraging activity rather than improving cognitive
ability. The technique of varying cognitive demands in behavioural tasks could be used more in future studies aimed at distinguishing
motivational effects from cognitive explanations for variation in behavioural performance. 相似文献

Many symbioses involve multiple partners in complex, multi-level associations, yet little is known concerning patterns of
nutrient transfer in multi-level marine mutualisms. We used the anemonefish symbiosis as a model system to create a balance
sheet for nitrogen production and transfer within a three-way symbiotic system. We quantified diel patterns in excretion of
ammonia by anemonefish and subsequent absorption by host sea anemones and zooxanthellae under laboratory conditions. Rates
of ammonia excretion by the anemonefish Amphiprion bicinctus varied from a high of 1.84 μmole g−1 h−1 at 2 h after feeding, to a basal rate of 0.50 μmole g−1 h−1 at 24–36 h since the last meal. Conversely, host sea anemones Entacmaea quadricolor absorbed ammonia at a rate of 0.10 μmole g−1 h−1 during the daytime in ammonia-enriched seawater, but during the night reduced their absorption rate to near zero, indicating
that ammonia uptake was driven by zooxanthella photosynthesis. When incubated together, net ammonia excretion was virturally
zero, indicating that host anemones absorbed most of the ammonia produced by resident fish. Adult anemonefish weighed about
11 g under laboratory conditions, but on the coral reef may reach up to 64 g, resulting in a maximal potential ammonia load
of >200 μmole h−1 produced by two adult fish during daylight hours. In contrast, host sea anemones weighed about 47 g in the laboratory, but
under field conditions, large individuals may reach 680 g, so their maximal ammonia clearance rates may reach about 70 μmole h−1 during the daytime. As such, the ammonia load produced by adult anemonefish far exceeds the clearance rate of host anemones
and zooxanthellae. Ammonia transfer likely occurs mainly during the daytime, when anemonefish consume zooplankton and excrete
rapidly, and in turn the zooxanthellae are photosynthetically active and drive rapid ammonia uptake. We conclude that zooplanktivorous
fishes that form mutualisms with coral reef cnidarians may serve as an important link between open water and benthic ecosystems,
through the transfer of large quantities of nutrients to zooxanthellate hosts, thus enhancing coral reef productivity. 相似文献

Habitat maps are frequently invoked as surrogates of biodiversity to aid the design of networks of marine reserves. Maps are used to maximize habitat heterogeneity in reserves because this is likely to maximize the number of species protected. However, the technique's efficacy is limited by intra-habitat variability in the species present and their abundances. Although communities are expected to vary among patches of the same habitat, this variability is poorly documented and rarely incorporated into reserve planning. To examine intra-habitat variability in coral-reef fishes, we generated a data set from eight tropical coastal habitats and six islands in the Bahamian archipelago using underwater visual censuses. Firstly, we provide further support for habitat heterogeneity as a surrogate of biodiversity as each predefined habitat type supported a distinct assemblage of fishes. Intra-habitat variability in fish community structure at scales of hundreds of kilometers (among islands) was significant in at least 75% of the habitats studied, depending on whether presence/absence, density, or biomass data were used. Intra-habitat variability was positively correlated with the mean number of species in that habitat when density and biomass data were used. Such relationships provide a proxy for the assessment of intra-habitat variability when detailed quantitative data are scarce. Intra-habitat variability was examined in more detail for one habitat (forereefs visually dominated by Montastraea corals). Variability in community structure among islands was driven by small, demersal families (e.g., territorial pomacentrid and labrid fishes). Finally, we examined the ecological and economic significance of intra-habitat variability in fish assemblages on Montastraea reefs by identifying how this variability affects the composition and abundances of fishes in different functional groups, the key ecosystem process of parrotfish grazing, and the ecosystem service of value of commercially important finfish. There were significant differences in a range of functional groups and grazing, but not fisheries value. Variability at the scale of tens of kilometers (among reefs around an island) was less than that among islands. Caribbean marine reserves should be replicated at scales of hundreds of kilometers, particularly for species-rich habitats, to capture important intra-habitat variability in community structure, function, and an ecosystem process. 相似文献

Studies on spatiotemporal pattern of population abundance predict that close populations should exhibit a high level of synchrony, reflected in a parallel time variation of at least one demographic parameter. We tested this prediction for two threatened species of Procellariiformes sharing similar life history traits: the European Storm Petrel (Hydrobates pelagicus) and the Balearic Shearwater (Puffinus mauretanicus). Within each species, we compared adult survival, proportion of transients (breeders that do not settle), and average productivity at two neighboring colonies. Physical and environmental features (e.g., food availability) of the breeding sites were similar. However, while Balearic Shearwater colonies were free of predators, aerial predators occurred especially in one colony of the European Storm Petrel. Despite this difference, we found similar results for the two species. A high proportion of transient birds was detected in only one colony of each species, ranging between 0.00-0.38 and 0.10-0.63 for the petrels and shearwaters, respectively. This seems to be an emergent feature of spatially structured populations of seabirds, unrelated to colony size or predator pressure, that can have important demographic consequences for local population dynamics and their synchrony. Local survival of resident birds was different at each colony, an unexpected result, especially for predator-free colonies of Balearic Shearwater. Productivity varied between the two colonies of European Storm Petrels, but not between the two colonies of Balearic Shearwaters. We demonstrated that within each species, several demographic parameters were colony specific and sufficiently different to generate short-term asynchronous dynamics. Our findings suggest that, in spatially structured populations, local factors, such as predation or small-scale habitat features, or population factors, such as individual quality or age structure, can generate unexpected asynchrony between neighboring populations. 相似文献

In order to clarify the historic academic problem of whether or not livestock poisoning in ancient Suzhou of Northwest China, recorded by Marco Polo in 1295, was selenosis, this study deals with the biogeochemistry of selenium in Sunan County in the Hexi Corridor, which is part of ancient Suzhou in China. It was found that quite a number of farm animals had suffered from intoxication and died as a result of grazing poisonous grasses, mostly Oxytropis DC, Stellera chamaejasme, and Achnatheru inebrians. Toxic symptoms of livestock grazing on Oxytropis DC are similar to those of selenium toxicity, for instance, hair loss and hoof lesions as described by Marco Polo. Therefore, we thought that toxic grass, probably Oxytropis DC, led to the intoxication of livestock recorded by Marco Polo. Average Se concentrations in two members of this species were 0.112 +/- 0.038 mg/kg for the root of Oxytropis glabra, 0.102 +/- 0.027 mg/kg for the stem and leaf of Oxytropis glabra, and 0.066 +/- 0.009 mg/kg for Oxytropis ochrocephala. The average soil selenium concentration was 0.205 +/- 0.127 mg/kg on grassland producing Oxytropis glabra and 0.152 +/- 0.024 mg/kg on grassland producing Oxytropis ochrocephala. The average Se concentration in other plants was 0.076 mg/kg in the root of Ephedra monosperma Mey, 0.029 mg/kg in the root of Rheum palmatum, 0.031 mg/kg in the root of Stellera chamaejasme, 0.037 mg/kg in Achnatherum inebrians, and 0.067 mg/kg in forage grass (Achnatherum splendens ohwi). Selenium concentrations in soils and plants in Sunan County are far less than the thresholds causing selenium toxicity in livestock. As a result, this study concludes that the livestock poisoning recorded by Marco Polo in 1295 might not have been selenosis. 相似文献

Solar energy conversion into electricity by photovoltaic modules is now a mature technology. We discuss the need for materials and device developments using conventional silicon and other materials, pointing to the need to use scalable materials and to reduce the energy payback time. Storage of solar energy can be achieved using the energy of light to produce a fuel. We discuss how this can be achieved in a direct process mimicking the photosynthetic processes, using synthetic organic, inorganic, or hybrid materials for light collection and catalysis. The continuous rise in production and applications of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) has grown a concern about their fate and toxicity in the environment. After use, these nanomaterials pass through sewage and accumulate in wastewater treatment plants. Since, such plants rely on biological degradation of wastes; their activity may decrease due to the presence of CNTs. This study investigated the effect of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) microbial activity. The toxic effect on microbial viability, extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), volatile fatty acids (VFA), and biogas generation was determined. The reduction in a colony-forming unit (CFU) was 29 and 58 % in 1 and 100 mg/L test samples, respectively, as compared to control. The volatile fatty acids and biogas production was also found reduced. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and fluorescent microscopy images confirmed that the MWCNT mediated microbial cell damage. This damage caused the increase in EPS carbohydrate, protein, and DNA concentration. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy results supported the alterations in sludge EPS due to MWCNT. Our observations offer a new insight to understand the nanotoxic effect of MWCNTs on UASB microflora in a complex environment system. 相似文献
