Every year earthquakes cause substantial economic losses and loss of life in many parts of the world. Earth observations may provide valuable information on spatial damage distribution and through that increase the efficiency of rapid response actions, finally resulting in reduction of earthquake induced losses. However, a methodology for quantitative assessment of the potential value of information in such a context has not yet been developed. That knowledge would be of high importance for planning and development of Earth observation systems on both regional and international levels when aiming at sustainable development goals. In this paper we suggest a stochastic modeling approach to assess the value of information for earthquake rapid response. Our analysis is focused on a rather short time interval after an earthquake occurrence (order of several hours) when there is a maximum need for urgent help to the earthquake victims. We use rescue efficiency as a performance measure of earthquake response actions; this efficiency is described in terms of timely arrival of rescue teams at places, where their help is mostly needed. We quantify the benefit of using spatial damage distribution information in terms of cost reduction/rescue efficiency gains. We intentionally conduct our analysis at a methodological level and do not go deeper into case studies to keep general conclusions traceable. The modeling exercise we present in the paper is a first step towards a more detailed and integrated approach that could contribute to better systematic understanding of earthquake response actions and ultimately improve their efficiency.  相似文献

Control of odours should be considered to be a fundamental issue in order to site, design and manage sanitary landfills. With regard to construction and demolition (C&;D) debris, landfilling was the mainly adopted solution in many European Countries; in particular, gypsum drywalls can produce high concentrations of hydrogen sulphide (H2S) in landfill gas ranging from 7 ppm to 100 ppm. In some cases also dangerous concentrations until to 12,000 ppm were detected. In this paper H2S removal efficiency in a lab-scale vertical packed scrubber was investigated. Hydrogen sulphide abatement was evaluated for inlet H2S concentrations of 1000–100–10 ppm, adjusting scrubbing liquid pH in the range 9–12.5 by means of caustic soda (NaOH 2N solution). Moreover, best operating conditions for the system were defined as well as H2S abatement along the tower and liquid recirculation effectiveness in case of inlet H2S concentration of 10 ppm (typical odour concentration). Results showed that pH of 11.5 in scrubbing liquid could be considered the best value for removal of different inlet H2S concentrations, also taking into account parasitical consumption of NaOH due to CO2 absorption. Moreover, in case of continuous working of the system at H2S concentration of 10 ppm, strong removal efficiency was already obtained with a packed bed height of about 70 cm. Significant performances were ensured after 1 h of constant activity, consuming about 3 ml of soda per cubic meter of polluted air. Subsequently liquid blowdown was necessary.  相似文献

Solvent extracts of HOM isolated from highly polluted sediments from the Ravenna Lagoon were studied. Diagnostic indicators included polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and nonylphenols as hazardous organic pollutants to characterize anthropogenic pollution, as well as fatty acids (FA, analysed as methyl esters, FAME) to characterize microbial communities responsible for natural attenuation processes. The distribution of PAHs including cyclopentafused surrogates pointed to a significant pyrogenic origin, characteristic for methane combustion. The PAH distribution was characterized by high concentrations of highly carcinogenic analytes with molecular weights of 276Da (benzo[ghi]perylene prevailing) and 300Da (coronene prevailing). The PAH pattern as obtained by solvent extraction was very different from that obtained from pyrolysis/thermochemolysis of the HOM polymeric matrix. The FA pattern indicated strong bacterial input, with a significant contribution from methanotrophic bacteria as revealed by monounsaturated members with n:1omega8 and n:1omega5 double bonds in the alkyl chain. Terrestrial inputs as revealed by FAME analysis beyond C(20) with pronounced even-over-odd discrimination were of minor significance. This was confirmed by the pattern of nC(24)-nC(30) alcohols in strong even-over-odd prevalence occurring in relatively low concentrations. The hopane hydrocarbon distribution reflected a distinctive impact from industrial processes utilizing heavy fractions of petroleum as feedstock. Hopanols along with the 17beta(H),21beta(H)-bishomohopanoic acid pointed to hopane producers, including methanotrophic and sulfate-reducing bacteria. Nonylphenols, which could not be detected in the pyrograms of solvent-extracted HOM matrix, had a total concentration of about 70microg g(-1) referred to the HOM in the solvent extract. In addition to common phytosterols including beta-sitosterol, coprostanol could be detected in the solvent extracts pointing to human fecal matter contamination. Concentration of resin acids turned out to be very low, thus no harmful environmental effects are to be expected from these compounds.  相似文献

Humic acid (HA) isolated from highly polluted sediment from the Ravenna Lagoon (Italy) was subjected to pyrolysis/tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH)-induced thermochemolysis to reveal the impact of industrial activities on humification. Special effort was made to distinguish between analytes originating from the polymeric humic organic matter network along with sequestered compounds (which cannot be released by solvent extraction), and the solvent-extractable lipid fraction sorbed onto the organic matrix. Exhaustive solvent extraction of the isolated HA proved mandatory to avoid biased results when identifying the origin of the pyrolyzates of untreated samples. Conventional pyrolysis at 750 degrees C of the "degreased" HA revealed a characteristic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) pattern, which was significantly different than patterns obtained from the pyrolysis of natural humic acids. TMAH-induced thermochemolysis at 500 degrees C provided information on carboxylic acids covalently bound inside the HA network via ester bonds. Thermochemolysis of the "degreased" matrix at 750 degrees C, resulting in the cleavage of C-O and C-C bonds, revealed a significant PAH pattern very similar to that obtained by conventional pyrolysis. The uncommon PAH pattern points to the formation of bound residues as the humification/detoxification pathway. Recalcitrant hopane hydrocarbons showed very similar patterns for both the untreated and exhaustively solvent-extracted samples, which points to hopanes being linked inside the humic network via C-C bonds. The technique of non-discriminating flash pyrolysis used in this study, based on extremely rapid capacitive discharge heating in a Silcosteel capillary, proved to be an excellent method to obtain high-boiling pyrolyzates (PAHs beyond 252Da molecular weight, C(29)-C(31)-hopanes).  相似文献

A specific 2-year program to monitor and test both the vadose zone and the saturated zone, coupled with a numerical analysis, was performed to evaluate the overall performance of slurry wall systems for containment of contaminated areas. Despite local physical confinement (slurry walls keyed into an average 2-m-thick aquitard), for at least two decades, high concentrations of chlorinated solvents (up to 110 mg l − 1) have been observed in aquifers that supply drinking water close to the city of Milan (Italy). Results of monitoring and in situ tests have been used to perform an unsaturated-saturated numerical model. These results yielded the necessary quantitative information to be used both for the determination of the hydraulic properties of the different media in the area and for the calibration and validation of the numerical model. Backfill material in the shallower part of the investigated aquifer dramatically affects the natural recharge of the encapsulated area. A transient simulation from wet to drought periods highlights a change in the ratio between leakages from lateral barriers that support a specific scenario of water loss through the containment system. The combination of monitoring and modelling allows a reliable estimate of the overall performance of the physical confinement to be made without using any invasive techniques on slurry wall.  相似文献

This study focused on the exposure of the common ragworm Hediste diversicolor (Müller 1776) to sediments enriched with different arsenic compounds, namely arsenate, dimethyl-arsinate, and arsenobetaine. Speciation analysis was carried out on both the spiked sediments and the exposed polychaetes in order to investigate H. diversicolor capability of arsenic bioaccumulation and biotransformation. Two levels of contamination (acute and moderate dose) were chosen for enriched sediments to investigate possible differences in the arsenic bioaccumulation patterns. The highest value of arsenic in tissues was reached after 15 days of exposure to dimethyl-arsinate (acute dose) spiked sediment (1,172?±?176 μg/g). A significant increase was also obtained in worms exposed both to arsenate and arsenobetaine. Speciation analysis showed that trimethyl-arsine oxide was the predominant chemical form in tissues of H. diversicolor exposed to all the spiked sediments, confirming the importance of this intermediate in biological transformation of arsenic.  相似文献

Evaluation of chemical bioavailability and onset of biological alterations is fundamental to assess the hazard of environmental pollutants, particularly when associated to sediments which need to be removed. In the present work, five sediment samples were collected from the Venice Lagoon and data from sediment chemistry were integrated with those of bioaccumulation of chemicals in European eel (Anguilla anguilla) exposed under laboratory conditions, responses of a wide battery of biomarkers, and standardized ecotoxicological bioassays. The overall results were elaborated within a recently developed, software-assisted weight of evidence (WOE) model which provides synthetic indices for each of considered line of evidence (LOE), before a general evaluation of sediment hazard. Levels of chemicals in sediments were not particularly elevated when compared to sediment quality guidelines of Venice Protocol. On the other hand, bioavailability was evident in some samples for Cd, Cu, Zn and, especially, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The ecotoxicological approach provided further evidence on the biological and potentially harmful effects due to released contaminants, and oxidative-mediated responses appeared of primary importance in modulating sublethal responses and the onset of cellular alterations. Biomarkers variations were sensitive, and more evident variations included significant changes of cytochrome P450 biotransformation pathway, antioxidant responses, onset of oxidative damages, lysosomal membrane stability and genotoxic effects. The results obtained from the battery of bioassays indicated that responses measured at organism level were in general accordance but less marked compared to the onset of sublethal changes measured through biomarkers. Overall this study revealed differences when comparing evaluations obtained from different LOEs, confirming the importance of considering synergistic effects between chemicals in complex mixtures. Compared to a qualitative pass-fail approach toward normative values, the proposed WOE model allowed a quantitative characterization of sediment hazard and a better discrimination of on the basis of various types of chemical and biological data.  相似文献

The Mar Piccolo of Taranto (Ionian Sea, Southern Italy) is a semi-enclosed and strongly polluted basin. For decades, it has been subjected to different anthropogenic impacts. These stressors caused severe sediments contamination with high concentration of different pollutants (PAHs, PCB, heavy metals). In order to assess the current status of sediments contamination, an ecotoxicological investigation combined with chemical analysis (heavy metals, PAH, and PCB) has been performed. In order to derive ecologically relevant conclusions, a multiorganisms and multiend-points approach has been applied, exposing organisms from different trophic levels to elutriate and whole sediment. The battery of bioassays consists of a microalgal growth inhibition test (Dunaliella tertiolecta), acute and sublethal assays (end-points: mortality, immobilization and swimming speed alteration) on crustaceans larvae and juveniles, and rotifers (Amphibalanus amphitrite, Artemia salina, Corophium insidiosum and Brachionus plicatilis), and embryotoxicity test on echinoderms (Paracentrotus lividus). Considering the high levels of sediment contamination highlighted from chemical analysis, an unexpected very low toxic effect was observed, even considering the sublethal end-point (larval swimming speed alteration). The results of this study suggest a very complex contaminants dynamic in the Mar Piccolo sediments that, despite a strong level of contamination, seems to not affect in a proportional manner the biological compartment.  相似文献

Quality assessments are crucial to all activities related to removal and management of sediments. Following a multidisciplinary, weight of evidence approach, a new model is presented here for comprehensive assessment of hazards associated to polluted sediments. The lines of evidence considered were sediment chemistry, assessment of bioavailability, sub-lethal effects on biomarkers, and ecotoxicological bioassays. A conceptual and software-assisted model was developed with logical flow-charts elaborating results from each line of evidence on the basis of several chemical and biological parameters, normative guidelines or scientific evidence; the data are thus summarized into four specific synthetic indices, before their integration into an overall sediment hazard evaluation. This model was validated using European eels (Anguilla anguilla) as the bioindicator species, exposed under laboratory conditions to sediments from an industrial site, and caged under field conditions in two harbour areas. The concentrations of aliphatic hydrocarbons, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and trace metals were much higher in the industrial compared to harbour sediments, and accordingly the bioaccumulation in liver and gills of exposed eels showed marked differences between conditions seen. Among biomarkers, significant variations were observed for cytochrome P450-related responses, oxidative stress biomarkers, lysosomal stability and genotoxic effects; the overall elaboration of these data, as those of standard ecotoxicological bioassays with bacteria, algae and copepods, confirmed a higher level of biological hazard for industrial sediments. Based on comparisons with expert judgment, the model presented efficiently discriminates between the various conditions, both as individual modules and as an integrated final evaluation, and it appears to be a powerful tool to support more complex processes of environmental risk assessment.  相似文献
