The persistence and dissipation pattern of dazomet residues in nursery bed soil and tomato seedlings under field condition and in submerged soil and surface water under laboratory condition was studied. In nursery bed soil the half life (t1/2) of dazomet ranged from 1.85 to 3.09 days indicating very rapid dissipation. No residues existed in tomato seedlings sown on the treated plots 3 weeks after application and the seedlings were healthy and devoid of any deformation. Under submerged condition dissipation was much faster both in soil and surface water, t1/2 being 0.82–0.84 days only in water. 相似文献
With the increase of water hardness from 60 to 720?mg/L CaCO3, total alkalinity from 32 to 376?mg/L CaCO3, pH from 7.6 to 7.9 and chloride from 28 to 350?mg/L, 96?h LC50 on the basis of total lead increased from 8.2 to 1291?mg/L for Cyprinus carpio and 5.3 to 865?mg/L for Catla catla, when soil sediments were included these values were further raised to 1356 and 874?mg/L, respectively. The dissolved lead LC50 values in all the treatments of soil and water was consistent with fixed amount of dissolved lead (1.04–1.78?mg/L) being needed for median lethal toxicity. Total lead toxicity also decreased with increase in pH from 6.3 to 11.3. 96?h LC50 values increased for common carp 15 to 631?mg/L and for catla, 8 to 355?mg/L. But dissolved lead toxicity was found to increase with the increase of pH from 6.3 to 11.3 for both common carp (LC50, 3.53 to 0.24?mg/L) and catla (LC50, 2.21 to 0.09?mg/L). Removal of dissolved Pb with increasing carbonate content, particulate matter and pH due to adsorption, precipitation or coprecipitation reaction, reduced the dissolved lead concentration and thus the total lead toxicity. Increase in toxicity of lead with increase of exposure time was the biological response of longer contact time and decrease in dissolved lead toxicity with decrease in pH was due to increase H+ ion competition. 相似文献
Microcystins (MCYST) are the freshwater cyanobacterial toxins, known to induce hepatocellular carcinoma, necrosis, intrahepatic bleeding, as well as human and livestock mortality. Within hepatocytes, MCYST selectively bind to protein phosphatases 1 and 2A, resulting in severe liver damage. The toxicology of MCYST in mice and rats has been well studied, but little is known regarding genotoxicity in aquatic animals. In this study, the zebrafish, Danio rerio was exposed to crude extract of Microcystis aeruginosa bloom. Liver and heart were examined for MCYST-induced toxicity. Light microscopy at 36?h revealed severe, widespread apoptotic necrosis of the majority of hepatocytes, and cytoskeletal deformation in myocardiocytes. Hepatocytes were dissociated with cell shrinkage and margination of nuclear chromatin. Laddering of genomic DNA from the liver and heart of the exposed fish in an increment of 180–200?bp was consistent with apoptosis. Fluorimetric analysis of DNA unwinding was carried out to determine the DNA strand breakage. After 36?h exposure, the % double-stranded DNA was significantly reduced in hepatocytes and myocardiocytes. In conclusion, the results obtained in this study indicate that, the extract of M. aeruginosa bloom is genotoxic to fish. The DNA damage observed in this study may be attributed to the activation of DNA endonucleases. This model of DNA damage may contribute for identifying novel molecular mechanisms of interest for therapeutic application. 相似文献
Chlorinated organics have been frequently detected in groundwaters, threatening the quality of drinking water supplies worldwide. A promising method for groundwater remediation involves reductive dechlorination (RD), in which chlorine atoms are sequentially removed and substituted by hydrogen, producing less harmful byproducts. In this paper, for the first time, RD research is reviewed in light of the growing incorporation of density functional theory (DFT) as a research tool. DFT has been used to uncover a variety of reaction properties for a range of relevant groundwater pollutants, including 1,2,3-trichloropropane, hexachlorobenzene, and various dioxins. DFT models have revealed the role of surface interactions in driving the kinetics of catalytically driven RD. Mechanisms involved with biologically mediated RD have also been elucidated with insights gleaned from DFT. Issues and challenges for future research are also discussed. 相似文献
Two-wheeler vehicles in Delhi, India--roughly 70% of the total vehicle fleet--are responsible for a significant portion of the city's vehicle emissions and petroleum consumption. An inspection and maintenance (I/M) program that ensures vehicle emission control systems are well maintained can complement other emission reduction strategies. This paper presents the initial findings of extensive data collected on vehicle characteristics and emissions for two-wheeler vehicles operating in Delhi in a series of I/M camps conducted by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers and various partners in late 1999. The analysis shows idle HC and CO emissions [measured in terms of parts per million (ppm) and volume % (vol %), respectively] in a slow declining trend with subsequent model years, reflecting tighter emission standards and more advanced emission technologies. The I/M benefits--3 vol % and 39% reduction in idle and mass CO, respectively; 40 vol % and 22% reduction in idle and mass HC, respectively; and a 10-20% increase in fuel efficiency--were higher than those reported in the literature. Although these benefits are substantial, any implementation strategy needs to consider cost-effectiveness. In the present study, only 10% of vehicles--contributing 22% of the total vehicle emissions--failed the idle CO standard. Fleet emissions data variability necessitates a large sample size to develop a baseline for the vehicle fleet, but a smaller, scientifically designed sample and better data collection quality could periodically track the benefits at future camps. 相似文献
Environmentally sustainable composite films were synthesized using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and cellulose. Cellulose was extracted from the Agro-waste (sugarcane bagasse) using chemical pre-treatment followed by the acid-hydrolysis process. The composites were also used for the treatment of dye (Methylene blue; MB and Crystal violet dye; CV) and it was observed that the removal capacity of PVA/C was 70% for CV and 64.5% for MB dye. The biodegradation study of these composite films was also carried out using bacterial strains isolated from the marine waters of south Bengal. The biodegradation study of these polymer composites was characterized by FTIR, SEM, XRD, TGA, swelling properties, and weight loss. The results indicated that the PVA/C polymer showed a better rate of degradation (43%) than PVA (35%). Different loading parameters like pH, temperature, and inoculum dosage were studied to assess the degradation of the composite materials. Thus, biodegradable composite films were synthesized utilizing Agro-waste and had dye removal properties. 相似文献

Cities are currently experiencing serious, multifaceted impacts from global environmental change, especially climate change, and the degree to which they will need to cope with and adapt to such challenges will continue to increase. A complex systems approach inspired by evolutionary theory can inform strategies for policies and interventions to deal with growing urban vulnerabilities. Such an approach would guide the design of new (and redesign of existing) urban structures, while promoting innovative integration of grey, green and blue infrastructure in service of environmental and health objectives. Moreover, it would contribute to more flexible, effective policies for urban management and the use of urban space. Four decades ago, in a seminal paper in Science, the French evolutionary biologist and philosopher Francois Jacob noted that evolution differs significantly in its characteristic modes of action from processes that are designed and engineered de novo (Jacob in Science 196(4295):1161–1166, 1977). He labeled the evolutionary process “tinkering”, recognizing its foundation in the modification and molding of existing traits and forms, with occasional dramatic shifts in function in the context of changing conditions. This contrasts greatly with conventional engineering and design approaches that apply tailor-made materials and tools to achieve well-defined functions that are specified a priori. We here propose that urban tinkering is the application of evolutionary thinking to urban design, engineering, ecological restoration, management and governance. We define urban tinkering as:
A mode of operation, encompassing policy, planning and management processes, that seeks to transform the use of existing and design of new urban systems in ways that diversify their functions, anticipate new uses and enhance adaptability, to better meet the social, economic and ecological needs of cities under conditions of deep uncertainty about the future.
This approach has the potential to substantially complement and augment conventional urban development, replacing predictability, linearity and monofunctional design with anticipation of uncertainty and non-linearity and design for multiple, potentially shifting functions. Urban tinkering can function by promoting a diversity of small-scale urban experiments that, in aggregate, lead to large-scale often playful innovative solutions to the problems of sustainable development. Moreover, the tinkering approach is naturally suited to exploring multi-functional uses and approaches (e.g., bricolage) for new and existing urban structures and policies through collaborative engagement and analysis. It is thus well worth exploring as a means of delivering co-benefits for environment and human health and wellbeing. Indeed, urban tinkering has close ties to systems approaches, which often are recognized as critical to sustainable development. We believe this concept can help forge much-closer, much-needed ties among engineers, architects, evolutionary ecologists, health specialists, and numerous other urban stakeholders in developing innovative, widely beneficial solutions for society and contribute to successful implementation of SDG11 and the New Urban Agenda.
Clever solid waste bin is important to create a well-organized and dynamic waste management system. This paper presents the novel way of carrying out an integrated sensing system which automates the solid waste management process. The proposed smart waste bin is based on ultrasonic-level sensor and various gas sensors which automatically sense the hazardous gases and the maximum limit of waste. The approach is unique and uses cloud and mobile app-based monitoring. Two important features of work are it not only checks the maximum waste level of the bin but also checks various stinky gases. The other part of the work is conveying the information to the responsible authority. This unique approach takes the assistance of cloud sever because of its advantages in field of usability, accessibility and disaster recovery. The information can be linked with municipality web server for immediate action. The waste bins are tracked by a unique number which represents its location. The eccentric technique gives all information related to physical condition of a particular bin and can easily reach the corresponding authority. The whole information is interconnected with a cloud-based web-information system at the host server. 相似文献
At present, flood is the most significant environmental problem in the entire world. In this work, flood susceptibility (FS) analysis has been done in the Dwarkeswar River basin of Bengal basin, India. Fourteen flood causative factors extracted from different datasets like DEM, satellite images, geology, soil and rainfall data have been considered to predict FS. Three heuristic models and one statistical model fuzzy Logic (FL), frequency ratio (FR), multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) and logistic regression (LR) have been used. The validating datasets are used to validate these models. The result shows that 68.71%, 68.7%, 60.56% and 48.51% area of the basin is under the moderate to very high FS by the MCDA, FR, FL and LR, respectively. The ROC curve with AUC analysis has shown that the accuracy level of the LR model (AUC?=?0.916) is very much successful to predict the flood. The rest of the models like FL, MCDA and FR (AUC?=?0.893, 0.857 and 0.835, respectively) have lesser accuracy than the LR model. The elevation was the most dominating factor with coefficient value of 19.078 in preparation of the FS according to the LR model. The outcome of this study can be implemented by local and state authority to minimize the flood hazard.
