The role of hindrance stressors in the job demand–control–support model of occupational stress: A proposed theory revision 下载免费PDF全文
Previous research on the job demand–control–support (JDCS) model of occupational stress has generally been inconsistent at best regarding a key issue: the interaction of demands, control, and support in predicting employee health and well‐being. However, the model continues to be tested in a variety of studies and academic journals owing to its intuitive appeal. By incorporating conservation of resources theory with knowledge from the challenge–hindrance stressor framework, we proposed that hindrance stressors, not the challenge stressors commonly assessed when testing JDCS theory, will provide validation for the model. A two‐wave panel study of 228 employees in a variety of occupations provided support for three‐way interactions between hindrance demands, control, and support predicting job‐related anxiety and physical symptoms. Three‐way interactions using a challenge demand (forms of workload) were not significant, consistent with our propositions. In summary, this study supports the buffering effect of control and support on the relationship between job demands and strain only when job demands reflect hindrance stressors, thereby proposing to alter the JDCS model by specifying that it applies primarily to hindrance stressors in a job hindrance–control–support model. The quantitative structure-activity relationship between the BCF and fragment constant of organic chemicals was studied using a database containing 337 experimental BCF values. The database covered a large variety of chemicals ranging from the very hydrophobic to the very hydrophilic with logKow values between 0.39 and 8.60. The structural features affecting the BCFs were identified and evaluated during a preliminary modeling. A final linear multivariate regression model was derived that was able to account for as much as 98.0% of the variation in the experimental BCF values. A system combining a national soils database with a neural network was developed for prediction of source location for soil samples. The neural network was trained to predict environmental characteristics, which can be of crucial importance to investigating officers in a police operation or to environmental agencies attempting to locate the source of a pollutant. When coupled with maps of environmental conditions and a generalized opinion pool approach, the system was used to produce weighted maps of source location. Extra-pair paternity is common in socially monogamous passerines; however, despite considerable research attention, consistent
differences in fitness between within-pair offspring (WPO) and extra-pair offspring (EPO) have not been demonstrated. Recent
evidence indicates that differences between maternal half-siblings may depend on environmental conditions, but it is unclear
whether the influence of paternal genetic contribution should be most apparent under comparatively poor or favourable conditions.
We compared phenotypic characteristics of WPO and EPO in 30 mixed-paternity broods of the tree swallow (Tachycineta bicolor) in relation to experimentally increased nest temperature (n = 13 heated nests; 17 control nests) and natural abundance of haematophagous parasites (Protocalliphora spp.). This allowed us to test the hypothesis that genetic benefits of extra-pair mating are environment dependent. EPO grew
their ninth primary feathers faster than WPO regardless of nest temperature or parasite load and had significantly longer
ninth primary feathers at fledging when parasite abundance was low, and when they were positioned early in the hatching sequence
relative to WPO. In contrast, WPO under similar conditions did not differ from EPO in any phenotypic trait measured. These
results indicate that the fitness benefits of extra-pair mating are likely to be context dependent, and that genetic effects

Desert winter annual plants: Camissonia claviformis, C. hirtella, Caulanthus cooperi, Chaneactis carphoclinia, C. stevioides, Cryptantha angustifolia, C. pterocarya, Erodium cicutarium, Festuca octoflora, Lupinus concinnus, Oenothera californica, Plantago insularis, Platystemon californica, Salvia columbariae, Thelypodium lasiophyllum, and Thysanocarpus curvipes growing on irrigated and non-irrigated plots were exposed in situ to elevated levels of ozone dispensed from an open air exposure system. Plants were exposed intermittently to a gradient of ozone of concentrations ranging between 44 and 133 ppb (nL L?1) for 35 h over a total of 216 h. Only three species were injured by ozone at the highest ozone concentrations. Leaf injury to C. claviformis—2 percent total foliar injury (TFI), C. hirtella—1 percent TFI, and Erodium cicutarium—2 percent TFI, developed at the highest ozone concentrations. Leaf injury to these species was similar on the irrigated and nonirrigated plots. Leaf water potential and stomatal conductance significantly decreased in C. claviformis, and C. hirtella due to water stress but not ozone. Similar trend for net photosynthesis was also determined.
