A joint linear-programming-interindustry model is used to estimate the impact on small regional economies of nonpoint-pollution controls on agriculture. Results from the linear-programming submodel of the farm-production sector of a region are entered as final-demand changes in the “rows-only” interindustry model of the regional economy. Emphasis is placed on describing the models, the linkages between them, and on evaluating the usefulness and limitations of the modeling approach. The study was conducted between January and December 2002. The main objective of this study was evaluation of effects of refrigerated storage duration on redistribution of three trace elements (Cd, Cu and Zn) in tissues (exoskeleton, abdominal muscle and hepatopancreas) of a shrimp species (Penaeus semisulcatus). Moreover, the possible roles of metallothionein (a kind of metalloprotein) in redistribution of the elements in tissues of the selected species were assessed. The specimens were sampled from northwestern part of the Persian Gulf. The concentrations of metals in the tissues were measured using Inductively Coupled Plasma-Optical Emission Spectrophotometer (ICP-OES). Metallothionein levels were determined by Differential Pulse Polarography (DPP) method. pH of the muscle samples was also measured in different stages. Different statistical methods were used for interpretation of the results. There were no size-dependent differences in metal contents of the species. The results were compared with specimens from other areas of the world and existing guidelines and limits. Concentrations of the metals in the muscle (0.103, 3.418 and 8.977 µg g–1 wet weight in the case of Cd, Cu and Zn, respectively) samples were below the most guidelines for human consumption. The results were in general agreement with those obtained by some other researchers. There were highly significant differences between sexes in Zn and Cu contents. Levels of Zn in females were significantly higher than males. The reverse case observed for Cu. The highest mean Cu and Zn concentrations (15.939 and 43.394 µg g–1 wet weight, respectively) were found in hepatopancreas samples, but the highest level of Cd (0.790 µg g–1 wet weight) was observed in exoskeleton. There were significant differences between the fresh and refrigerated samples from accumulation of Cd and Zn in tissues point of view, which can be attributed to the metal binding properties of metallothioneins as well as their degradation during the storage.  相似文献

Accurate predictions of acid precipitation effects on water resources are important in order to allow a better understanding of various pollution control strategy outcomes. Dynamic geochemical models have been developed to address this need, but have to be tested under a variety of environmental conditions to provide confidence in their predictions. The most commonly used aquatic acidification model in North America and Europe is the model of acidification of groundwater in catchments (MAGIC). Though extensively used, MAGIC has never been tested in catchments with extremely low ionic strength water and high in natural organic acids (NOAs) from wetlands, two conditions which are common in large parts of Canada. We calibrated the model for two catchments located in Nova Scotia, Canada, which had some of the most dilute freshwaters reported in the literature and very high NOA. We also evaluated the variability inherent in calibration data sets by using five separate data sets collected over a 15-year period at the same sites. We show good model simulations for the main cations and anions in catchment waters. However, modeling pH is more difficult in the highly organic waters and requires modification to the acid dissociation constants. Calculated acid neutralization capacity can also be more difficult to model due to the low ion content making small errors more important. In theory, multiple calibrations of a model at a same site should produce identical hindcasts and predictions. In reality, the multiple calibrations produced a series of similar, but not identical outcomes which give a probable range of past values and future outcomes. We feel that this practical approach to validation is a useful addition to the arsenal of model testing tools.  相似文献

The goals of this study were to: (1) measure atrazine and metolachlor concentrations during both high and low use periods in the Chesapeake Bay's mainstem/major tributaries, smaller tributaries and representative small agricultural streams during 1995 and 1996; (2) compare these exposure data with toxicity benchmarks for each herbicide to predict ecological risk and (3) use in-stream fish community data collected in the streams to provide supportive data for ecological risk characterization. Spatially, atrazine (<0.10–98 g/L) and metolachlor (<0.10–68 g/L) concentrations were highest in the streams, followed by the small tributaries (<0.10–11 g/L atrazine; <0.10–8.6 g/L metolachlor) with the lowest concentration in the mainstem Bay/larger tributaries (<0.10–0.22 g/L atrazine; <0.10–0.24 g/L metolachlor). Temporally, concentrations of both herbicides were greatest in all three types of habitats in the late spring and early summer. Concentrations of atrazine and metolachlor were very low or non-detectable in all habitats sampled from early August to mid-April. Toxicity benchmarks of 20 g/L for atrazine based on an ecological No Observed Effect Concentration (NOEC) for microcosm/mesocosm studies and an acute 10th percentile of 53 g/L for metolachlor (protection of ninety % of the species) based on laboratory toxicity data were selected to assess annual and seasonal ecological risk. Both of these toxicity benchmarks were conservative estimates of ecological risk designed to protect the trophic group (plants) most sensitive to these herbicides. Based on a comparison of these toxicity benchmarks with two years of exposure data, the ecological risk from both atrazine and metolachlor exposure in the mainstem Chesapeake Bay/large tributaries, small tributaries and representative agriculturally dominated streams was generally judged to be low. During one 72-h stream rain event in 1995, the atrazine toxicity benchmark (20 g/L) was exceeded during part of the event. However, long-term permanent ecological effects are not expected based on the documented recovery potential of the most sensitive trophic group (plant communities) to the concentrations of atrazine reported and the transient nature of the atrazine pulses. Fish communities at the stream sites receiving the highest concentrations of both herbicides were judged to be healthy based on an Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI) developed for Maryland's coastal plain.  相似文献

The Panulirus ornatus stock in a 25 000 km2 area of Torres Strait was estimated by making visual counts of the number of lobsters in strip transects. Pilot studies in 1988 to assess the feasibility of a full-scale survey and optimize the sampling design showed that: 4×500 m transects were the most cost-effective of the different sizes trialled; two transects per location comprised the most optimal allocation of replication; and 300 locations were necessary to achieve a 95% confidence interval of ±10% of the mean density found in the pilot study. Satellite imagery was used to map habitats in Torres Strait, and areas likely to be inhabited by lobsters were classified broadly into three strata: windward reef slope, submerged reef, and deep areas. The 300 locations were allocated to each stratum in proportion to its area and the estimated variance of lobster abundance within it; once allocated, the locations were positioned at random within each stratum. The main survey was undertaken over a period of 7 wk in May–June 1989, and the resulting estimate of lobster abundance was 14 million with a 95% confidence interval of ±21%. The surveyed population was sampled concurrently to determine its size structure: the pre-fishery year-class comprised 43% of the population; lobsters greater than legal-size comprised 57% and their average tail weight was 346 g. Thus, the estimate of stock size for the study area was 2200 to 3350 t tail weight, which is roughly ten-fold greater than the annual catch of about 250 t. The current catch is approaching the lower estimates of potential yield, calculated using simple maximal sustainable yield estimators, which suggests that the fishery is unlikely to be under threat at present and may support greater effort.  相似文献

Passive samplers have been shown to be an inexpensive alternative to direct sampling. Diffusion denuders have been developed to measure the concentration of species such as ammonia (NH3), which is in equilibrium with particulate ammonium nitrate. Conventional denuder sampling has required active sampling that inherently requires air pumps and, therefore, electrical power. To estimate emissions of NH3 from a fugitive source would require an array of active samplers and meteorological measurements to estimate the flux. A recently developed fabric denuder was configured in an open tube to passively sample NH3 flux. Passive and active samplers were collocated at a dairy farm at the California State University, Fresno, Agricultural Research Facility. During this comparison study, NH3 flux measurements were made at the dairy farm lagoon before and after the lagoon underwent acidification. Comparisons were made of the flux measurements obtained directly from the passive flux denuder and those calculated from an active filter pack sampler and wind velocity. The results show significant correlation between the two methods, although a correction factor needed to be applied to directly compare the two techniques. This passive sampling approach significantly reduces the cost and complexity of sampling and has the potential to economically develop a larger inventory base for ambient NH3 emissions.  相似文献
