Humans are an important intertidal predator in central Chile. Following a five-year study we report on the effects of the exclusion of humans from the rocky intertidal at Las Cruces, central Chile. The middle intertidal of harvested and non-harvested areas diverged in species diversity and composition during the experiment. In harvested areas the middle intertidal rocky shore was dominated throughout the study by a monoculture of mussels, Perumytilus purpuratus. When humans were excluded, the middle intertidal community switched to one dominated by barnacles (predominantly Jehlius cirratus and Chthamalus scabrosus); this community has persisted for at least three years, despite the presence of forces e.g. mussel larvae, that have the potential to alter the community structure. Such changes were mediated by the muricid gastropod Concholepas concholepas, a key-stone predator. As a consequence of the above changes, the species diversity, H', (primary space occupiers) in the non-harvested area increased from H'=0 at the beginning of the study in 1983 (when the middle intertidal community was dominated by mussels), to values ca H'=2 toward the middle of the study in 1984 (which coincided with the maximum predatory impact of C. concholepas) and subsequently decreasing to ca H'=0.5 at the end of the study in 1987 (when the middle intertida community was dominated by barnacles).Please address all correspondence to J. Scientific thinking may require the consideration of multiple hypotheses, which often call for complex statistical models at the level of data analysis. The aim of this introduction is to provide a brief overview on how competing hypotheses are evaluated statistically in behavioural ecological studies and to offer potentially fruitful avenues for future methodological developments. Complex models have traditionally been treated by model selection approaches using threshold-based removal of terms, i.e. stepwise selection. A recently introduced method for model selection applies an information-theoretic (IT) approach, which simultaneously evaluates hypotheses by balancing between model complexity and goodness of fit. The IT method has been increasingly propagated in the field of ecology, while a literature survey shows that its spread in behavioural ecology has been much slower, and model simplification using stepwise selection is still more widespread than IT-based model selection. Why has the use of IT methods in behavioural ecology lagged behind other disciplines? This special issue examines the suitability of the IT method for analysing data with multiple predictors, which researchers encounter in our field. The volume brings together different viewpoints to aid behavioural ecologists in understanding the method, with the hope of enhancing the statistical integration of our discipline.  相似文献

Microbial communities (phospholipid fatty acid pattern, bacterial growing strategies, eco-physiological index (EPI) and total bacteria counts, as a number of heterotrophic cuhurable bacteria), substrate-induced respiration (SIR), and nitrogen mineralization were studied in three Mediterranean soils at three different depth levels (A, B and C). Soils were experimentally treated with a final concentration of 1000 ppm of trace metals (Cu2+, Zn2+, Al3+, Fe2+, Pb2+, Ni2+, Mn2+, Cr3+ and Cd2+). Soils were stored in 571 plastic containers for one year, and watered with 1001 during this period. Leachate was recovered through a bottom tap. Samples of the three depths were studied. Soil microbial communities showed different effects to other studies presented in the literature, but carried out on non-Mediterranean soils. Dramatic differences were found between treated soils and untreated ones, but not between soils or horizons. the treated soil displayed a decrease in CFUs, SIR N-mineralization and EPI together with a dominance of r-growing strategists. the relative moles percent of several PLFAs, especially 15:0, 16: 1ω7, cy17: 0, br18:0 and 18: 1ω7 decreased because of the pollution of soils, whereas 10Me16, 18:2ω6, cy19:0, i16:0 and br17:0 showed higher values than in untreated soils.  相似文献

Efforts to anticipate threats to biodiversity take the form of species richness predictions (SRPs) based on simple correlations with current climate and habitat area. We review the major approaches that have been used for SRP, species-area curves and climate envelopes, and suggest that alternative research efforts may provide more understanding and guidance for management. Extinction prediction suffers from a number of limitations related to data and the novelty of future environments. We suggest additional attention to (1) identification of variables related to biodiversity that are diagnostic and potentially more predictable than extinction, (2) constraints on species dispersal and reproduction that will determine population persistence and range shifts, including limited sources or potential immigrants for many regions, and (3) changes in biotic interactions and phenology. We suggest combinations of observational and experimental approaches within a framework available for ingesting heterogeneous data sources. Together, these recommendations amount to a shift in emphasis from prediction of extinction numbers to identification of vulnerabilities and leading indicators of change, as well as suggestions for surveillance tools needed to evaluate important variables and the experiments likely to provide most insight.  相似文献

The influence of gonadal maturation on seawater adaptability at the metabolic level was assessed in the euryhaline teleost Sparus auratus by treatment of immature fish with 17ß-estradiol (E2) followed by acclimation to different environmental salinities. Fish were injected with coconut oil alone (sham) or containing E2 (10 µg g–1 body weight) and maintained in seawater (40). After 5 days, fish from oil- and E2-implanted groups were sampled. At the same time, fish of both groups were transferred to brackish water (5, hypoosmotic test), seawater (40, transfer test), and hypersaline water (55, hyperosmotic test); 4 days after transfer (9 days post-implant) all groups were sampled. Data obtained from liver suggest that E2 treatment produced effects comparable to those already reported in literature, including decreased glycogen levels, increased glycolytic potential, and decreased gluconeogenic potential. This, together with the fact that many changes displayed in shams among salinities disappeared in E2-treated fish allow us to suggest that the response of liver carbohydrate metabolism to osmotic acclimation is exceeded by the response elicited by E2 treatment. In gills, E2 treatment produced increased lactate levels, decreased capacity for use of exogenous glucose, and decreased the potential of the pentose phosphate pathway. These findings suggest that the energy demand occurring in gills during osmotic acclimation should be increasingly fuelled by substrates other than exogenous glucose. Finally, data obtained in brain of E2-treated fish suggest a lower necessity of exogenous glucose, increased lactate levels, and decreased glycolytic potential.Communicated by S.A. Reproductive period and size at maturity of the brown shrimp Farfantepenaeus californiensis were analyzed for correspondence to sea surface temperature (SST) in three zones of the Gulf of California. Mature females from fishing areas in the north (Puerto Peñasco), center (Guaymas), and south (Mazatlán), and monthly SST were examined. Average SST for 1983–2000 decreased from Mazatlán (26.2±0.2°C) to Puerto Peñasco (22.6±0.3°C). The seasonal variation in SST between coldest and warmest months was 7.8°C in Mazatlán and 11.4°C in Puerto Peñasco. The size of shrimps at maturity was inversely correlated to SST, increasing from Mazatlán (121 mm total length) to Puerto Peñasco (154 mm total length). The reproductive period near Mazatlán is year-round. Guaymas and Puerto Peñasco have one period of high intensity. We conclude that warmer water and low seasonal variability allow brown shrimp to reproduce more frequently, but reach smaller size at maturity.Communicated by P.W. Sammarco, Chauvin  相似文献

Climate warming is driving changes in species distributions and community composition. Many species have a so-called climatic debt, that is, shifts in range lag behind shifts in temperature isoclines. Inside protected areas (PAs), community changes in response to climate warming can be facilitated by greater colonization rates by warm-dwelling species, but also mitigated by lowering extirpation rates of cold-dwelling species. An evaluation of the relative importance of colonization-extirpation processes is important to inform conservation strategies that aim for both climate debt reduction and species conservation. We assessed the colonization-extirpation dynamics involved in community changes in response to climate inside and outside PAs. To do so, we used 25 years of occurrence data of nonbreeding waterbirds in the western Palearctic (97 species, 7071 sites, 39 countries, 1993–2017). We used a community temperature index (CTI) framework based on species thermal affinities to investigate species turnover induced by temperature increase. We determined whether thermal community adjustment was associated with colonization by warm-dwelling species or extirpation of cold-dwelling species by modeling change in standard deviation of the CTI (CTISD). Using linear mixed-effects models, we investigated whether communities in PAs had lower climatic debt and different patterns of community change than communities outside PAs. For CTI and CTISD combined, communities inside PAs had more species, higher colonization, lower extirpation, and lower climatic debt (16%) than communities outside PAs. Thus, our results suggest that PAs facilitate 2 independent processes that shape community dynamics and maintain biodiversity. The community adjustment was, however, not sufficiently fast to keep pace with the large temperature increases in the central and northeastern western Palearctic. Our results underline the potential of combining CTI and CTISD metrics to improve understanding of the colonization-extirpation patterns driven by climate warming.  相似文献

Mesozooplankton biomass (as displacement volume and protein content) and electron-transport system (ETS) activity have been studied in the coastal waters around the Canary Islands. Increases in biomass and ETS activity, on a unit volume basis, were observed in the wakes of the islands. The biomass values obtained in the leeward area for Gran Canaria Island were up to ten times higher than those observed for typical oceanic waters around this archipelago. Sampling was performed in May 1986 at the end of the characteristic vertical mixing period in these waters. Relatively strong winds were recorded prior to sampling. Specific ETS activity was higher at the windward stations on the island shelf. This correlates with the observation in a recent study of increased primary production on the shelf area, where turbulence produced by the northerly trade winds has a marked effect. The persistence of this turbulence during a prolonged wind-pulse results in an accumulation of organisms in the wake of the islands due to current dynamics. This process is proposed as being an important causative mechanism of the island-mass effect. Different biomass values were recorded between circular and oblong islands. The latter are oriented towards the current and the northerly trade winds, and display significantly lower biomass values than the former.  相似文献
