Fish tissues from different fishery types (freshwater farmed, seawater farmed and seawater wild) were analyzed for organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), with the aim to further our understanding of bioaccumulation, and reflect the state of different fishery environments. Significantly higher SigmaOCP levels were found in seawater farmed fish than others, and among three freshwater farmed species, the lowest levels occurred in filter-feeding fish (bighead carp). Liver contained the highest SigmaOCP levels, while no significant differences were found among other tissues. Among DDT components, p,p'-DDT was abundant in seawater fish, while for freshwater fish, p,p'-DDE was the predominant congeners, except for northern snakehead (34% for p,p'-DDE and 30% for p,p'-DDT). The new source of DDTs to freshwater fish ponds was partly attributed to dicofol, whereas sewage discharged from the Pearl River Delta and anti-fouling paint were likely the DDTs sources to seawater farmed fish.  相似文献

The mass transport budgets of 1,1,1-trichloro-2,2-bis(chlorophenyl)ethane (p,p′-DDT) and decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209) in the Pearl River Delta, South China were calculated based on previously collected data. Residual p,p′-DDT, mostly related to historical use, has largely settled into soil (780,000 kg), while the soil BDE-209 inventory (44,000 kg) is considerably smaller. Conversely, large amounts of BDE-209 currently used in numerous commercial products have resulted in a much higher atmospheric depositional flux of BDE-209 (28,100 kg/yr) relative to p,p′-DDT (310 kg/yr). The soil inventory of p,p′-DDT is predicted to decrease to half of its current value after 22 years, and the percent area containing soil p,p′-DDT at levels exceeding the effects range-medium (27 ng/g) will decrease from 40% to 20%. Finally, soil BDE-209 inventory will reach an equilibrium value of 940 tons in ∼60 years, when BDE-209 levels in 50% of soil will be above an equivalent risk guideline value (125 ng/g).  相似文献

A total of 32 surface sediments collected from the Yangtze River Estuary, Hangzhou Bay and the Qiantang River were analyzed for polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). The concentrations of summation operatorPBDEs (sum of 12 PBDE congeners without BDE 209) and BDE 209 varied from n.d. to 0.55 and from 0.16 to 94.6 ng/g, respectively. The spatial variability of summation operatorPBDEs concentrations indicated that waste discharge from the urban areas might been the main source of PBDEs in the Yangtze River Delta. BDE 209 was the predominant congener (approximately 90-100%) detected among the 13 congeners, consistent with the fact that technical deca-BDE mixtures are presently the dominant technical PBDE mixtures used in China. Compared to published data acquired from other locales, PBDE congeners with less than four bromines were more abundant in the present study area. The hydrodynamic conditions may likely be a significant factor in dictating the observed levels and congener distribution patterns of PBDEs.  相似文献

A combined NO2-SO2 Radiello radial-type diffusive sampler was validated under controlled laboratory conditions and compared with NO2-SO2 results of 3 other type of samplers in a field comparison at two locations Ghent-Mariakerke and Borgerhout in Flanders. Laboratory exposures at different temperatures (-5, 10 and 30 degrees C) and relative humidities (0, 50 and 80% RH) in combination with varying concentration levels and exposure times were carried out, with a focus on extreme conditions. Concentration level and exposure time were changed together following suppliers linear working range of samplers and assuring absolute amounts of compounds on the sampler corresponding to those of environmental levels. The average uptake rate for NO2 for 24 hour exposures at 10 degrees C and 50% RH and tested concentration levels (+/-73, 146 and 293 ppb NO2) was 0.076 +/- 0.011 ng ppb(-1) min(-1). Uptake rates during all experiments were lower than the uptake rate given in the instruction manual of the sampler. A significant effect of temperature and relative humidity on NO2 uptake rate was observed. The temperature effect from 10 to 30 degrees C corresponds to the temperature effect given by the supplier of the samplers. High relative humidity (70 to 80%) caused a strong non-reproducible decrease of uptake rate for NO2 at 24 hour experiments but this effect was not observed at longer exposures except for the tests at -5 degrees C. At the tested temperature below zero in combination with high relative humidity the sampler showed anomalous behaviour for NO2. The possible effect of concentration level and exposure time for NO2 needs further research. The average uptake rate for SO2 calculated from all exposures is 0.478 +/- 0.075 ng of sulfate ion each ppb min of SO2 and accords to suppliers uptake rate. No clear effects of temperature, relative humidity or concentration level/exposure time on the uptake rate for SO2 were found, partly due to the large scatter of results. Although NO2 accuracy of Radiello samplers was better during field campaigns than during laboratory validation, IVL and OGAWA samplers gave better results for NO2. In the field, IVL samplers showed best agreement with the continuous analyzers for both NO2 and SO2.  相似文献

Bioconcentration factor (BCF) is often assumed to be linearly associated with the octanol-water partition coefficient K(ow) for hydrophobic organic chemicals (HOCs). However, a large amount of data has suggested that the correlation between the logBCF and logK(ow) is curvilinear for HOCs. Similar curvilinear relationship has also been noticed for sorption of HOCs into poly(dimethyl)siloxane (PDMS), a polymer with cross-linked interior structures. So far no satisfactory explanation has been given to account for the deviation. In this study, we acquired additional experimental data to show that the curvilinear relationship between the log-based PDMS-coated fiber-water partition coefficient (logK(f)) and logK(ow) for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) was indeed a reflection of the sorption process occurring in PDMS film other than experimental defects. The physical origin of the nonlinearity was pinpointed based on the theory of phase partitioning for HOCs. The linear relationship is observed if the solute molecule is considerably smaller than the size of a monomer unit of PDMS in that the Gibbs free energy required for cavity formation in PDMS is comparable to that in octanol. Higher free energy of cavity formation is needed to create sufficient free volume if the PCB molecular size is comparable to or larger than the monomer unit of PDMS. On the other hand, the free energy of cavity formation in octanol remains almost constant when this occurs, resulting in the observed curvilinear relationship. The proposed model adequately explains the observed data, as well as sheds lights into the physical origin of the steric interactions of large molecular size solute with the PDMS polymer network.  相似文献

Better insight in the possible range of future N?O emissions can help to construct mitigation and adaptation strategies and to adapt land use planning and management to climate objectives. The Dutch fen meadow landscape is a hotspot of N?O emission due to high nitrogen inputs combined with moist peat soils due to land use change. Socio-economic developments in the area are expected to have major impacts on N?O emission. The goals of this study are to estimate changes in N?O emissions for the period 2006-2040 under three different scenarios for the Dutch fen meadow landscape (rural production, rural fragmentation, and rural multifunctionality) and to quantify the share of different emission sources. Three scenarios were constructed and quantified based on the Story-And-Simulation approach. The rural production and the rural fragmentation scenarios are characterized by globalization and a market-oriented economy; in the rural production scenario dairy farming has a strong competitive position in the study region, while under the rural fragmentation scenario agriculture is declining. Under the rural multifunctionality scenario, the global context is characterized by regionalization and stronger regulation toward environmental issues. The N?O emission decreased between 2006 and 2040 under all scenarios. Under the rural production scenario, the N?O emission decreased by 7%. Due to measures to limit peat mineralization and policies to reduce agricultural emissions, the rural multifunctionality scenario showed the largest decrease in N?O emissions (44%). Under the rural fragmentation scenario, in which the dairy farming sector is diminished, the emission decreased by 33%. Compared to other uncertainties involved in N?O emission estimates, the uncertainty due to possible future land use change is relatively large and assuming a constant emission with time is therefore not appropriate.  相似文献

It seems inevitable that the ongoing and rapid changes in the physical environment of the marine Arctic will push components of the region’s existing social-ecological systems—small and large—beyond tipping points and into new regimes. Ongoing changes include warming, freshening, acidification, and alterations to food web structure. In anticipation we pose three distinct but interrelated challenges: (1) to explore existing connectivities within components of the marine system; (2) to seek indicators (if they exist) of approaching regime change through observation and modeling; and (3) to build functional resilience into existing systems through adaptation-oriented policy and to have in hand transformative options when tipping points are crossed and new development trajectories are required. Each of the above challenges is scale dependent, and each requires a much deeper understanding than we currently have of connectivity within existing systems and their response to external forcing. Here, we argue from a global perspective the need to understand the Arctic’s role in an increasingly nonlinear world; then describe emerging evidence from new observations on the connectivity of processes and system components from the Canada Basin and subarctic seas surrounding northern North America; and finally posit an approach founded in “resilience thinking” to allow northern residents living in small coastal communities to participate in the observation, adaption and—if necessary—transformation of the social-ecological system with which they live.  相似文献

The use of meta-analysis Is becoming more common In the medical literature, but It Is not common in the environmental literature. Although meta-analysis cannot combine a group of poorly executed, conflicting studies to get an unequivocal answer, there are certain situations where it can be helpful. The Inability of studies to produce similar results may be a function of the power of the studies rather than a reflection of their quality. The literature on the effects of nitrogen dioxide on the odds of respiratory Illness in children is such an example. Three quantitative methods for the synthesis of this evidence are presented. Although the methods produce slightly different results, the conclusion from all three methods Is that the increase in the odds of respiratory Illness in children exposed to a long-term increase of 30 μg/m3 (comparable to the increase resulting from exposure to a gas stove) is about 20 percent. This estimated increase is not sensitive to the method of analysis.  相似文献
