The quantitative data obtained with a capillary GLC method, which is used to determine the individual C3-C12 hydrocarbons in full-range motor gasolines, have been employed in a computer program to calculate the hydrocarbon composition of the vapor in equilibrium with a gasoline at 100°F, as well as the equilibrium vapor-pressure of the gasoline at that temperature. The method used for computation is similar to that previously described by McEwen, assuming the gasoline to behave as an ideal liquid. Also calculated is the potential atmospheric reactivity of this equilibrium vapor relative to that from other gasolines when specific reactivity weighting factors for the individual hydrocarbons are employed. Calculated total vapor-pressure data agree well with experimental Reid vapor-pressure data obtained for typical premium-grade gasolines. Definite differences were observed in the relative potential atmospheric reactivities calculated at 100°F for the equilibrium vapors from the test gasolines. 相似文献

A different approach to mathematically modeling large-scale atmospheric processes is presented. Whereas past approaches have been to develop a model based on an accumulation of information from a specific geographical area, resulting in a model applicable to that area only, we have developed a general mathematical model applicable to any geographical area. The model’s applicability is controlled by specifying the input information describing the meteorological situation and pollution source configuration. A rectangular array of grid points is used to specify both the wind field, by using stream functions, and the average source strength of some pollutant for the area represented by the grid. The diffusion problem is divided into two areas: transport by the mean wind field, and dispersion based on travel time and distance as described by empirical equations. Trajectories of pollutants are traced backwards from the points of interest in the course of the calculations and the contributions of all sources that affect the points of interest are accumulated. The model requires an array of source strength information. An inventory of pollution sources in the State of Connecticut was compiled and maps of source strengths were prepared for five pollutants on a 5000-ft grid-square array. Maps of sulfur dioxide and carbon monoxide source strengths are presented with the resulting concentration distribution for “typical” meteorological conditions. The model permits the changing of meteorological or source values at predetermined intervals so that diurnal changes are incorporated in the calculations. The model has not been verified, but the values of pollution concentration are the right order of magnitude and the resulting patterns are as expected. 相似文献

This paper reports on the research program undertaken by the State of New Jersey to determine those tests and instruments which can be used by authorized state agencies for the enforcement of diesel smoke emissions. The state agencies under consideration for the enforcement of diesel smoke emissions are the following: (1) The Division of Motor Vehicles, in its system of state owned inspection stations, will be able to inspect all diesel-powered trucks, and tractors which are registered in New Jersey. (2) The Public Utilities Commission will be able to inspect at their home garages all buses registered in the State. (3) The New Jersey State Police will be able to inspect diesel-powered vehicles on the road. It was decided that the maximum inspection time for each vehicle was not to exceed one minute. On the basis of the one minute per vehicle requirement, eight different tests were evaluated to determine which ones correlated well with normal vehicle operation. These tests included acceleration of a fixed external inertia, free acceleration of only the moving parts of the engine, three ramp tests, a test in which a heavy vehicle was towed, and a driving test in which the vehicle being tested was actually accelerated. The results of tests demonstrated that the modified free acceleration method correlates reasonably well with a loaded steady state cycle, distinguishes the high emitters and is simple to perform. Consequently, the free acceleration test method is recommended for use in inspection stations and on the road. Finally, nearly two hundred vehicles have been tested by this procedure to determine present and potential levels of diesel smoke emissions. Another phase of the program consisted of the determination of smoke measuring techniques and instrumentation. The use and design of smokemeters were extensively investigated, as well as the use of the visual and photographic techniques. Of the various smokemeters tested for this application, several measured smoke satisfactorily in the laboratory, but none were found adequate for field use; they either lacked portability or were unstable due to the deposition of soot on the optics. The nitrate ion selective electrode was investigated as an alternative approach to the present colorimetric determination of nitrate resulting from oxidative absorption of nitrogen oxides from combustion effluents. The electrode offers advantages of speed and relatively simple experimental procedure. Replicate measurements of 10?4–10?2M nitric acid solutions using bracketing standards show that the electrode approach is capable of good precision (coefficient of variation = ±4%). Comparison of a method utilizing the nitrate electrode with the more laborious phenol disulfonic acid method for the measurement of nitrogen oxides in both oil and gas fired combustion effluents showed agreement within 4% of the mean even in the presence of high levels of SO2. The correlation coefficient found for PDS vs nitrate electrode is 0.987. 相似文献

The introduction of oxidizing catalytic converters in the exhaust system of automobiles has been found to be effective in reducing carbon monoxide, total hydrocarbons, and some other components of tailpipe emissions. The utilization of these converters, however, has also caused further oxidation of sulfur compounds producing an increased amount of sulfur trioxide (SO3) which yields sulfuric acid and sulfates.1 Studies on the biological effects of these sulfur compounds are in progress in our laboratory and preliminary findings are reported separately. Biogas technology, besides supplying energy and manure, provides an excellent opportunity for mitigation of greenhouse gas (GHG) emission and reducing global warming through substituting firewood for cooking, kerosene for lighting and cooking and chemical fertilizers. A study was undertaken to calculate (1) global warming mitigation potential (GMP) and thereby earning carbon credit of a family size biogas plant in India, (2) GMP of the existing and target biogas plants in the country and (3) atmospheric pollution reduction by a family size biogas plant. The GMP of a family size biogas plant was 9.7 t CO(2) equiv. year( - 1) and with the current price of US $10 t( - 1) CO(2) equiv., carbon credit of US $97 year( - 1) could be earned from such reduction in greenhouse gas emission under the clean development mechanism (CDM). A family size biogas plant substitutes 316 L of kerosene, 5,535 kg firewood and 4,400 kg cattle dung cake as fuels which will reduce emissions of NOx, SO(2), CO and volatile organic compounds to the atmosphere by 16.4, 11.3, 987.0 and 69.7 kg year( - 1), respectively. Presently 3.83 million biogas plants are operating in the country, which can mitigate global warming by 37 Mt CO(2) equiv. year( - 1). Government of India has a target of installing 12.34 million biogas plants by 2010. This target has a GMP of 120 Mt CO(2) equiv. year( - 1) and US $1,197 million as carbon credit under the CDM. However, if all the collectible cattle dung (225 Mt) produced in the country is used, 51.2 million family size biogas plants can be supported which will have a GMP of 496 Mt of CO(2) equiv. year( - 1) and can earn US $4,968 million as carbon credit. The reduction in global warming should encourage policy makers to promote biogas technology to combat climate change and integration of carbon revenues will help the farmers to develop biogas as a profitable activity. 相似文献

A simple and sensitive spectrophotometric method for the determination of chromium has been developed. The method is based on the diazotization of Dapsone in hydroxylamine hydrochloride medium and coupling with N-(1-Napthyl) Ethylene Diamine Dihydrochloride by electrophilic substitution to produce an intense pink azo-dye, which has absorption maximum at 540 nm. The Beer's law is obeyed from 0.02-1.0 microg mL(-1) and the molar absorptivity is 3.4854 L mol(-1) cm(-1). The Limits of quantification and Limit of detection of the proposed method are 0.0012 microg mL(-1) and 0.0039 microg mL(-1) respectively. The method has been successfully applied for the determination of chromium in water samples and the results were statistically evaluated with that of the reference method. 相似文献

This work aimed to report present levels (2007–2008 sampling) of tri- (TBT), di- (DBT), and monobutyltin (MBT) in surface sediments from 11 Portuguese coastal sites and discuss the evolution of BTs contamination in the last two decades. All the samples revealed quantifiable values of TBT, DBT, and MBT with total butyltin concentrations between 1 and 565 ng/g (of Sn in dry sediment). Maximum level of TBT, 66 ng/g, was observed in Sado estuary, at Lisnave site, in the proximity of a big shipyard. MBT decreased site by site by the same order as DBT and TBT did, but its concentrations were much higher in many cases, denoting that TBT contamination was much higher in the past. A comparison with the available previous data confirmed a marked decrease of TBT contamination all over the last years, indicating that the main sources of TBT in Portuguese coastwise stopped effectively. 相似文献

Acoustic Doppler current meters (ADV, ADCP, and ADP) are widely used in water systems to measure flow velocities and velocity profiles. Although these meters are designed for flow velocity measurements, they can also provide information defining the quantity of particulate matter in the water, after appropriate calibration. When an acoustic instrument is calibrated for a water system, no additional sensor is needed to measure suspended sediment concentration (SSC). This provides the simultaneous measurements of velocity and concentration required for most sediment transport studies. The performance of acoustic Doppler current meters for measuring SSC was investigated in different studies where signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and suspended sediment concentration were related using different formulations. However, these studies were each limited to a single study site where neither the effect of particle size nor the effect of temperature was investigated. In this study, different parameters that affect the performance of an ADV for the prediction of SSC are investigated. In order to investigate the reliability of an ADV for SSC measurements in different environments, flow and SSC measurements were made in different streams located in the Aegean region of Turkey having different soil types. Soil samples were collected from all measuring stations and particle size analysis was conducted by mechanical means. Multivariate analysis was utilized to investigate the effect of soil type and water temperature on the measurements. Statistical analysis indicates that SNR readings ob tained from the ADV are affected by water temperature and particle size distribution of the soil, as expected, and a prediction model is presented relating SNR readings to SSC mea surements where both water temperature and sediment characteristics type are incorporated into the model. The coefficients of the suggested model were obtained using the multivariate anal ysis. Effect of high turbidity conditions on ADV performance was also investigated during and after rain events. 相似文献
