The bulk magnetic susceptibility of sediments from artificial and natural lakes around a large coal-fired power station in NE Spain has been measured. Higher magnetic susceptibility values are found in lake sediments located SE of the power station. This distribution of susceptibility values is compatible with environmental and meterological studies of emissions from the power station, which indicate a dominant SE plume direction. Mineralogical studies, by means of X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, show that the highest susceptibility values found in the sediments are caused by magnetic iron spinels in the fly ash that is transferred to the environment by the power station particulate emissions. After the quantitative mineralogical studies of fly ash, two different methods of fly ash content determination in the sediments have been devised, showing very similar results. The low background magnetic susceptibility of the sediments in the study area and the high susceptibility resulting from the input of magnetic fly ash particles allows both delimitation of the polluted area around the power station, and quantification of the fly ash input into the natural sediments. 相似文献

In the asperillo dune system, Southwest Spain, lichen vegetation covering the dune sand, has a low species diversity but is
an important component of the perennial vegetation, providing stability, nutrients, and moisture to the soil layer. The Asperillo
dunes harbour (1) natural ecosystems, (2) disturbed systems affected by forestry activities where the natural vegetation is
eliminated, and (3) pine forest resulting from afforestation withPinus pinea since the end of the 1940s where the composition and abundance of the lichen flora has been drastically changed.
Our hypothesis was that the lichen species composition and distribution are influenced by the type and period of human intervention.
To test this hypothesis a 1.2 km × 1.1 km area, which includes zones with different degrees of conservation and perturbation,
consisting of five different habitats, was selected: well preservedJuniperus woodland,Pinus pinea plantations with dense scrub, dense scrub,P. pinea plantations cleared from scrub, and pioneer scrub in recent pine afforestation. In each area, randomly located 5m × 5 m homogeneous
plots were sampled. In each plot the cover of shrub and lichen species was recorded.
The first results show that lichen cover is higher in the most preserved areas,Cladonia mediterranea being the dominant species under theJuniperus phoenicea canopy. The lichen community changes in composition and abundance depending on the time elapsed since the last perturbation. 相似文献

We assessed experimentally how the quality and quantity of social information affected foraging decisions of starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) at different neighbour distances, and how individuals gained social information as a function of head position. Our experimental set up comprised three bottomless enclosures, each housing one individual placed on a line at different distances. The birds in the extreme enclosures were labelled senders and the one in the centre receiver. We manipulated the foraging opportunities of senders (enhanced, natural, no-foraging), and recorded the behaviour of the receiver. In the first experiment, receivers responded to the condition of senders. Their searching rate and food intake increased when senders foraged in enhanced conditions, and decreased in no-foraging conditions, in relation to natural conditions. Scanning was oriented more in the direction of conspecifics when senders behaviour departed from normal. In the second experiment, responses were dose dependent: receivers increased their searching rate and orientated their gaze more towards conspecifics with the number of senders foraging in enhanced food conditions. In no-foraging conditions, receivers decreased their searching and intake rates with the number of senders, but no variation was found in scanning towards conspecifics. Differences in foraging and scanning behaviour between enhanced and no-foraging conditions were much lower when neighbours were separated farther. Overall, information transfer within starling flocks affects individual foraging and scanning behaviour, with receivers monitoring and copying senders behaviour mainly when neighbours are close. Information transfer may be related to predation information (responding to the vigilance of conspecifics) and foraging information (responding to the feeding success of conspecifics). Both sources of information, balanced by neighbour distance, may simultaneously affect the behaviour of individuals in natural conditions.Communicated by H. Kokko 相似文献

A comparative study of the degradation of commercial acrinathrin spiked in water using TiO2 photocatalysis and photolysis under sunlight was performed. Samples were analysed by liquid chromatography-diode array detector (HPLC-DAD) and gas chromatography-ion trap-mass spectrometric detector (GC-ITMS). Additional total organic carbon (TOC) analyses were carried out to evaluate the mineralisation rates. One photoproduct, 2-phenoxy benzaldehyde, was unequivocally identified and evaluated by GC-ITMS during the processes. Although acrinathrin is almost destroyed when exposed to irradiation for more than 400 h, photocatalysis with TiO2 noticeably reduced degradation to a few hours. In this case, with the additional presence of peroxydisulphate, in less than 2 h acrinathrin is completely destroyed. Mineralisation of acrinathrin, without catalyst, was only around 50% after 400 h of irradiation. 相似文献

A comparison of indigenous mosses and topsoils for use in monitoring atmospheric heavy metal deposition in Galicia (northwest Spain) 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Samples of moss (Scleropodium purum or, in its absence, Hypnum cupressiforme) and of topsoil (0-5 cm) were collected in the spring of 1995, from 75 sites distributed throughout Galicia (northwest Spain) in order to compare the potential usefulness of each in evaluating the atmospheric deposition of contaminants. Analysis was made of the total content of various metals in the moss and of different soil metal fractions (including total metal content, labile metals and metals bound to organic material). We found that the labile fraction most closely resembled the metal content of the moss. Calculation of enrichment factors allowed us to show that the soil was not, except in the case of Cr, the main source of contamination in the moss. By comparing contamination factors of metals in moss and soil fraction samples we found that moss samples were more useful for evaluating the degree of contamination at different sites. 相似文献

Titanium dioxide photocatalysis (using 20 0mg l(-1) of TiO2), under aerobic and anaerobic conditions, and photo-Fenton (2 and 56 mg l(-1) iron) were applied to the treatment of different NBCS (non-biodegradable chlorinated solvents), such as dichloroethane, dichloromethane and trichloromethane dissolved in water at 50 mg l(-1). All the tests were performed in a 35-l solar pilot plant with compound parabolic collectors (CPCs) under natural illumination. The two solar treatments were compared with attention to chloride release and TOC mineralisation, as the main parameters. Photo-Fenton was found to be the more appropriate treatment for these compounds, assuming volatilisation as a drawback of photocatalytic degradation of NBCS dissolved in water. In this context, several operating parameters related to NBCS degradation, e.g., treatment time, temperature, hydrogen peroxide consumption and volatility of parent compounds are discussed. In modeling transport within naturally heterogeneous aquifers, it is usually assumed that the transport equations valid at local scales can also be applied at larger scales. At larger scales, the heterogeneous domain is represented by an equivalent homogeneous medium. Convergent-flow tracer tests constitute one of the most frequently used field tests to estimate effective input parameters of equivalent homogeneous aquifers. Traditionally, statistical approaches applied to groundwater flow and solute transport have provided tools to estimate these equivalent parameters. These approaches are based on a number of simplifications including the assumption that the point transmissivity values follow a multilog-normal random function. Several investigators have found that this assumption may not be valid in many field cases. In order to study the applicability of the equivalent homogeneous formulation in a nontraditional stochastic field, a number of experimental and numerical studies were conducted. The results are used to determine the apparent values of porosity and dispersivity that would be obtained if convergent-flow tracer tests were conducted in a deterministically generated heterogeneous transmissivity field displaying anisotropy in the correlation structure. It is shown that in this particular heterogeneous media, apparent porosity strongly depends on connectivity rather than on transmissivity. This dependence on connectivity questions the theoretical results obtained in continuum equivalent fields to estimate effective porosity. 相似文献

In this work, the findings of the first assessment of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) in emissions releases to the atmosphere from coal-fired power plants are given. A total of five plants were selected for the study located at different provinces in Spain. In all the cases, the results revealed very low levels, in the range of 0.41 pg I-TEQ/Nm(3). The profile indicated in the majority of the cases predominance of highly chlorinated congeners being OCDD the most important contributor. The findings were also used to estimate contribution of PCDDs/PCDFs emitted from coal-fired power plants in Spain. Individual plant results revealed values below 0.02 g I-TEQ per year and plant. Nevertheless, considering the total coal consumption in Spain in 1997, the values are comparable to those reported in other countries in the range of 0.6-0.7 g I-TEQ per year. Moreover, emission factors were determined considering operating conditions of evaluated plants. In general, large variability was observed and values below 1-5 pg I-TEQ/kg coal were early reached. 相似文献

Boundary layer ozone and carbon monoxide were measured at a savannah site in the Orinoco river basin, during the dry and wet seasons. CO and O3 concentrations recorded around noontime show a good linear correlation, suggesting that the higher ozone levels observed during the dry season are photochemically produced during the oxidation of reactive hydrocarbons in the presence of NOx both emitted by biomass burning. The rate of photochemical ozone production in the boundary layer ozone by biomass burning calculated from the production ratio ΔO3/ΔCO (0.17±0.01 v : v) and the amount of CO produced by fires (0.26–1.3 mole m−2 dry season−1), ranges from 0.6 to 2.6 ppbv h−1 for 8 h of daylight. This O3 production rate is in fairly good agreement with the value derived from RO2 radical measurements made in the Venezuelan savannah during the dry season. The net boundary layer production of O3 from all tropical America savannah fires is estimated to range between 0.28 and 0.36 Tmol O3 per year, which is about 3 times higher than the O3 produced from pollution sources in the eastern United States during the summer. An extrapolation to all of the world's savannah would indicate a net boundary layer ozone production of about 1.2 Tmol yr−1. This is discussed in the context of the overall global budget of tropospheric ozone. 相似文献
