In this paper the radiological impact from the airborne routine discharges of a modern coal-fired power plant at Langerlo (Belgium) is evaluated. Therefore, the natural radioactivity contents of the coal and the fly-ash discharged were measured. With a bi-Gaussian plume model the maximum annual values of the 226Ra concentration in the air (4.5 nBq/m3) and of the total deposition (1.5 mBq/m2) were calculated. The transfer of the radionuclides from air and soil to the biospheric media, exposing man, were modelled and the annual, individual, effective dose to the critical group, after an assumed life span of the power plant of 70 years, was evaluated at 0.05 microSv/y. This is several orders of magnitude lower than the annual doses for most power plants reported in the literature. The flue gas purification system, extended with a denitrification unit and a desulphurisation unit, was found to be the basis for this low impact.  相似文献

The required properties of a CO2 sorbent for sorption-enhanced steam–methane reforming (SESMR) are derived following a top-down approach. First the required CO2 equilibrium pressure of the sorbent is derived from system restraints, then a suitable sorbent is searched for matching the required CO2 pressure. The selected material, barium orthotitanate Ba2TiO4, has been characterized and tested on lab-scale. From this follows that the capacity and kinetics are poor compared with CaO, which has been investigated for SESMR. The best use of Ba2TiO4 is in combination with CaO, making use of the good properties of both: the high capacity and good kinetics of CaO, and the low CO2 equilibrium pressure of Ba2TiO4 allowing high CH4 conversion at relatively low steam-to-methane ratios (3–4).  相似文献

Dehydrated hereditary stomatocytosis (DHS) is a rare congenital hemolytic anemia. We observed that some patients had presented with different prenatal or perinatal forms of edema in some kindreds. Within weeks or months after birth, these exhibited a spontaneous, complete and definitive resorption. We assumed that some DHS patients, who were born without edema before ultrasound was available, might nonetheless have exhibited this during the prenatal period. The present report follows up the first pregnancy in a woman with overt DHS, but not herself having a known history of perinatal effusions. Ultrasound revealed that the fetus displayed ascites that disappeared prior to birth. The neonate had DHS. Prenatal edema must therefore be more frequent in DHS than known until now. The main function of the spermatozoon is the transfer of the male haploid genome during fertilisation. In animals in general and in fishes in particular, there is huge variation in sperm size. In fishes, sperm size ranges from 13 μm in Mugil cephlus to nearly 100 μm in the channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus. We examined intra-specific variation in sperm morphometry in the socially monogamous cichlid Pelvicachromis taeniatus using scanning electron microscopy. The mean total sperm length of nearly 70 μm was extraordinarily large for cichlids. Furthermore, within-male variation was remarkably high. To our knowledge, P. taeniatus produces the longest cichlid sperm ever documented. Several hypotheses concerning the adaptive significance of these results are presented.  相似文献

In the European Waste List (2000/532/EC as amended) the ash of municipal waste incineration is defined as a so called mirror entry. This waste can be classified as hazardous or non-hazardous depending on the content of hazardous substances and other risk properties. For the assignment of waste in mirror entries, 14 criteria are defined. One of the criteria is H14 “ecotoxic”. In the presented study, the ecotoxicological potential of 12 ashes from different incineration plants has been assessed using biological test systems. The test battery included aquatic tests with eluates (algae, daphnids, and luminescent bacteria) and terrestrial tests with solid waste (plants, earthworms and bacteria). The test results revealed a clear ecotoxicological hazard potential for some of the MWI ashes. Despite the fact that fresh ashes were several times more toxic than aged ashes both groups did not differ consistently in terms of toxicity. The results show also that there is no correlation between the biological effects and the analyzed chemical compounds of the ash samples.  相似文献

Considerable concern is caused by the problem of potato peel waste (PPW) to potato industries in Europe. An integrated, environmentally-friendly solution is yet to be found and is currently undergoing investigation. Potato peel is a zero value waste produced by potato processing plants. However, bio-ethanol produced from potato wastes has a large potential market. If Federal Government regulations are adopted in light of the Kyoto agreement, the mandatory blending of bio-ethanol with traditional gasoline in amounts up to 10% will result in a demand for large quantities of bio-ethanol. PPW contain sufficient quantities of starch, cellulose, hemicellulose and fermentable sugars to warrant use as an ethanol feedstock. In the present study, a number of batches of PPW were hydrolyzed with various enzymes and/or acid, and fermented by Saccharomyces cerevisae var. bayanus to determine fermentability and ethanol production. Enzymatic hydrolysis with a combination of three enzymes, released 18.5 g L?1 reducing sugar and produced 7.6 g L?1 of ethanol after fermentation. The results demonstrate that PPW, a by-product of the potato industry features a high potential for ethanol production.  相似文献
