The stability of stratified rotating flows is investigated by means of laboratory experiments and numerical simulations in axisymmetric cylindrical and annular containers with both horizontal and sloping bottoms. The baroclinic current is initiated via incremental spin-up/down of a linearly stratified fluid by an abrupt change in the rotation rate of the system. Particular attention is given to the non-linear flow regime (finite Rossby numbers). It is found that axisymmetric spin-up current loses its azimuthal symmetry when the Burger number drops below unity, and breaks into a system of large-scale cyclonic and anticyclonic vortices with predominantly vertical axis of rotation. Eddies always develop at the density fronts formed by the corner regions adjacent to the sidewalls of the container. It is shown that the stability of the spin-up flow is largely affected by the bottom slope and the structure of the bottom boundary layer. 相似文献

In this paper, the material and spatial characterization of the flows within a municipal solid waste (MSW) management system are combined through a Network-Based Spatial Material Flow Analysis. Using this information, two core indicators are developed for the bio-waste fraction, the Net Recovery Index (NRI) and the Transport Intensity Index (TII), which are aimed at assessing progress towards policy-related sustainable MSW management strategies and objectives. The NRI approaches the capacity of a MSW management system for converting waste into resources through a systematic metabolic approach, whereas the TII addresses efficiency in terms of the transport requirements to manage a specific waste flow throughout the entire MSW management life cycle. Therefore, both indicators could be useful in assessing key MSW management policy strategies, such as the consecution of higher recycling levels (sustainability principle) or the minimization of transport by locating treatment facilities closer to generation sources (proximity principle). To apply this methodological approach, the bio-waste management system of the region of Catalonia (Spain) has been chosen as a case study. Results show the adequacy of both indicators for identifying those points within the system with higher capacity to compromise its environmental, economic and social performance and therefore establishing clear targets for policy prioritization. Moreover, this methodological approach permits scenario building, which could be useful in assessing the outcomes of hypothetical scenarios, thus proving its adequacy for strategic planning. 相似文献

The pharmaceutical compound indomethacin is not totally removed in wastewater treatment plants,whose effluents flow into aquatic environments;concentrations in the 0.1-100 ng/L range are commonly found in surface waters,and its fate is unknown.Here,biological,photochemical and thermal degradation assays were conducted under stress and non-stress conditions to estimate its degradation rate in river water and establish its degradation products over time.The results revealed that direct sunlight irradiation promoted the complete degradation of indomethacin(2 μg/L) in less than 6 hr,but indomethacin was detected over a period of 4 months when water was kept under the natural day-night cycle and the exposure to sunlight was partially limited,as occurs inside a body of water.The biological degradation in water was negligible,while the hydrolysis at pH 7.8 was slow.Residues were monitored by ultra-pressure liquid chromatography/quadrupole time-of-flight/mass spectrometry after solid-phase extraction,and six degradation products were found;their structures were proposed based on the molecular formulae and fragmentation observed in high-resolution tandem mass spectra.4-Chlorobenzoic and 2-acetamido-5-methoxybenzoic acids were the long-term transformation products,persisting for at least 30 weeks in water kept under non-stress conditions.Furthermore,the degradation in the presence of sediment was also monitored over time,with some differences being noted.The adsorption coefficients of indomethacin and degradation products on river sediment were calculated;long-term degradation products did not have significant adsorption to sediment. 相似文献

Communities who rely directly on the natural environment for their survival typically have developed risk management strategies
to enable them to avoid dangerous thresholds of change to their livelihoods. Development policy appropriate for natural resource-based
communities requires an understanding of the primary drivers of social-ecological change, the ways in which affected households
autonomously respond to such drivers, and the appropriate avenues for intervention to reduce vulnerability. Coffee has been,
and still remains, one of the most important commodities of the Mesoamerican region, and hundreds of thousands of smallholder
households in the region are dependent in some way on the coffee industry for their livelihood stability. We used the Analytical
Network Process to synthesize expert knowledge on the primary drivers of livelihood change in the region as well as the most
common household strategies and associated capacities necessary for effective response. The assessment identified both gradual
systemic processes as well as specific environmental and market shocks as significant drivers of livelihood change across
the region. Agronomic adjustments and new forms of social organization were among the more significant responses of farmers
to these changes. The assessment indicates that public interventions in support of adaptation should focus on enhancing farmers’
access to market and technical information and finance, as well as on increasing the viability of farmers’ organizations and

The present study investigated the influence of 241Am on microbial growth and the degradation of organic waste. Leachate samples collected in a lysimeter were periodically analyzed
for bacterial growth, under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. 241Am inhibited bacterial growth, and the degradation of organic matter was delayed in comparison with the control. Minimal inhibitory
concentration assays and survival curves revealed that it inhibits the growth of Pseudomonas putida F1. The assay also revealed that 241Am is more toxic than 238U, Zn2+ and Cd2+. This study further led to the finding of four new radionuclide-tolerant bacterial strains: Flavobacterium spp., Pseudomonas gladioli, Chryseobacterium indologenes and Ochrobactrum anthropi. The survival curves of P. gladioli, C. indologenes revealed that these bacteria are resistant to metal as consortia. 相似文献

Many hospitals or health care facilities have faced financial difficulties and thus they have attempted to find cost-effective treatment and disposal methods of their regulated medical wastes (RMWs). This study investigated generation volume and sources, composition, and treatment and disposal methods for RMWs obtained from three out of the five typical city hospitals in Massachusetts for which we could obtain relevant data on medical waste. Also, this study compared the generation patterns and amounts of RMWs between the hospital and the medical school. The yearly operational treatment and disposal costs of RMWs based on different treatment and disposal methods were analyzed for one hospital. The most cost-effective option of four different treatment and disposal options studied was to combine on-site incineration and microwave technologies. Finally, this study identified measures for the effective waste characterization methods for the reduction of treatment and disposal costs of RMWs. By careful exclusion of non-RMW from RMW waste streams, hospitals can reduce the RMW volume that requires special treatment and reduce disposal costs. 相似文献
